Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 9 February, 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by David C. Plummer In attendance were BIM, Barmar, DMK, CAH, RDM, JSL, GMP, Naha, HGA, DCP, 2 users, Steve. Late were: RK, RLL, ACW, Alan, J9, c|, JIS, Jay, WER. The minutes of the meeting of Feb. 2, 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. RK and RLL came in during the minutes. The Treasurer, (Richard Lawhorn) took the chair at this point. User Interrupt: Chi Phi. Application to develop alumni data base program. It was moved to change Chi Phi's previous application for $100 to apply to this project and not to their previous one. Passed. ACW, Alan, and J9 came in during the user interrupt. User Interrupt: Marc K. Freedman wants $300 to continue developing a database system for the Macroengineering Group. This is a continuing project which has had much money from us in the past. It was moved to give $20 to last the rest of week, and BIM will help Freedman look for alternate sources of funding. The fifth floor is one possibility: they might like this as an example of an RDMS application. c| came in during the user interrupt. Treasurer's Report: $3311.76 spent since 29 January. A third of this cost comes from disk charges. The 370 IAP projects were cut off today except for the CMS course which cuts off on the 15th. The SIPB submitted a proposal to FinBoard for putting terminals everywhere. BIM talked to the Provost's secretary who says that she cannot get us an appointment with the Provost until we prepare a statement about SIPB goals and funding sources. This letter could be the same as the statement that the Chairman is supposed to be preparing for the CCE. But the Chairman has not been seen and no one knows how much progress has been made in this document. BIM will work with the Treasurer on producing a document that will get posted, reviewed, and sent to the Provost quickly. We estimate that February spending will be near $8K. This will leave $22K for the rest of the year. Chairman's Report: No chairman. He left New York City around 18:30. Office Report: When Spinwriter ribbons are empty, throw them out. Spinwriter requests labelled IPS/etc., take them over to the operators. If Dispatch is closed, put them in the slot under the ECS plots and then someone should take them over to Dispatch the next morning. There are very old ECS plots up there. Naha untangled some cords. We will get a darkroom key. The area behind the magazines will be examined and possibly rearranged. Computer Services: BIM's version of the Spinwriter daemon seems to be mostly working. It has a few bugs which are getting fixed. The next version will be very exciting. Super and subscripting, shifted-out special characters, and so on. There is a proliferation of request types with weird type fonts: BIM produced a catalog of available fonts. Starting March 15, Dispatch will be open 24 hours a day five days a week, maybe Sundays. The exact schedule has not yet been set. It was moved to move a terminal from the office and one from the Student Center as soon as the schedule change happens and space becomes available in Dispatch. Tabled. Paper lossage is still happening in the SCTR. There was lossage with acls in jjs's hierarchy. We will put an attach_audit in jjs's startup so that we have a record of whatever lossage happens. We may work on installing the NCAR graphics package on Multics. This has winning 3D graphics and cool special effects. There is an RDMS version Two seminar on Wednesday. There was a discussion of whether people should have ECS-only accounts. It was moved not to add any more users to the ECS project. Passes. It was moved to punt the ECS report from the daily. Passes. Telecommunications Report: The dataset was fixed. It would be nice to have a soundproofing box for the Spinwriter, especially if the box includes a device for stacking the output. This week we will investigate such merchandise. The office VT100's set-up key is broken: it was called in. The Burton terminal was called in. The SCTR VT100 was called in. Publications Report: There are Lisp notes ready to be picked up. Elections: For the office of secretary: BIM, Barmar were nominated . BIM won, 6 to 3. For the EC: CAH 8, Steve 4, Jay 4, WER 2. Runoff between Steve and Jay: Steve 4, Jay 4, 1 abstention. JIS came in at this point. Runofff betweeen Steve and Jay: Steve 5, Jay 5. Runoffff betweeeen Steve and Jay postponed by the EC for two weeks. Other: Steve wrote a letter to the Tech complaining about the column in which they mentioned the SIPB uncomplimentarily. The Smoke Filled Room will happen tomorrow night at 7:30. CAH talked to an MIT student cross-registered at Wellesley, taking a course that uses the Wellesley 20 for text processing, but he has trouble accessing that machine from MIT. We should think about improving access from our end. Applications: Edmund P. Lee wants $200 to do 8.14 labs. He has already had $400 for doing 8.13 labs. Given, with the warning that there may not be any more. Thomas Dobroth wants $100 to do papers for 21.762 (Scientific Essays). Given. Zwi Bern was warned for doing resumes for other people: in fact he has been doing almost all the work on his micro and has been simply storing things on Multics. Other people sometimes use this micro and also have stuff stored. He has used a very small amount of money. Turned back on. Investment Analysis Society was given $50 to do stock market investment simulation. DMK wants $200 to do papers for 8.14 and 21.743. Given.
