Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 8 March 1982 The meeting was called to order at 19:32 by Wendy E. Rowe. In attendance were barmar, DCP, Naha, CBF, Alan, GMP, CAH, RK, RLL, WMY, WER, HGA, ZRM, LRH, and BCN. Late were: HDT, Gill, JON, Lai, RDZ, JIS, JSL The minutes of the meeting of 1 March 1982 were read and accepted as corrected. Barmar should read them before he sends them out. HDT, Gill came in during this. *** User Interrupt *** The Tech - $200 - computerize the business operations of The Tech using RDMS. This is just for development; they will fund the running of it later on. They eventually plan to get their own computer for doing such things. Gill suggested that they try to get time on LSC's computer (haha). Motion to give; amended that they must give us an oral report after $100. Passed. *** End User Interrupt *** JON, Lai came in during this. Treasurer's Report: There were several hundred dollars in leftover IAP deposits. MTD Multics: $4,003.14. Multics allocated and not used: $23,000 Chairman's Report: Annual Report time is coming up. Start thinking about it. Office Report: The chart recorder disappeared, thanks to J9. Lai got a key to the supply closet. A SpinWriter cover was ordered. It should be winging its way from the west coast. There is noone taking office hours Thursday, 4-5. ZRM will take it. People should double up, now. The gray stapler has disappeared. Someone, buy a new one. Computer Services: New Multicians are being trained, and people are trying to fix broken commands. Many ex-CISL people's hierarchies were deleted. Telecommunications Report: The Teleray keyboard casing is screwed up; it holds keys down. RLL spoke to Eric about what kind of LSI-11 equipment we should get. Eric suggests that we hold off until the Networking Group finds out what they are getting. Telecommunications has been told to fix the broken pair in the Student Center. DEC may be donating 20 VT100's to the Networking Group to be placed into the Student Center library. All of the Telerays except the one going to ESP have been payed for, but not all have been picked up. We are losing badly by losing things like tools and now a dataset. We should not lend out equipment in the future, except under explicit vote. The keyboard of the office Z19 is bouncing alot. It should be sent back to the factory. Eastgate isn't going to get their Z19, because they don't want to put up the liability and the phone company wants extra money to put in the line. We have to reallocate the terminal. East Campus would really like to have it in addition to their LA36. DTD and PSK, who have been given printing terminals, would prefer video terminals, and several ATO brothers would like a terminal. As for East Campus, there is some doubt as to whether a Z19 will last in the heat of the EC terminal room; this sounds like a myth. Motion to put the Z19 in EC; passed. We are still losing in terms of getting modems. WER called Bartlett about the SpinWriter. They will send out the pica_10 wheels tomorrow, but they are still waiting on ribbons. The repairman who was supposed to order us the new sub-base assembly never did, so they were put on order today. The rubber-band is a poor substitute. Publications Report: When people want to learn how to use Multics, point them to the Multics New User's Guide, a Honeywell manual. Also point them to the IPS memos, several of which are free. The NUMS is not a comprehensive manual. WER will be taking the NETS and NUMS home with her over Spring Break; let her know of any suggestions you have for them. There will be a manual collating session after the meeting; if we don't finish tonight, we will continue after dinner tomorrow. Other: Let barmar know if you are interested in going to Florida for the shuttle launch. RDZ came in during this. Applications: Kimura, Andrew - $400 - for a UROP project for Course VI. He will be bringing up a special software package on Multics and then using it. Motion to give $400, in $200 chunks with a progress report after the first chunk. Given. JIS came in during this. Several users were not new_student'ed recently. WMY suggests that the Student start_up.ec check. Developers will get together and work this out. Trachtman, Howard D. - $60 - learn PL/I, as he expects to do system development work. Has had $100 so far. Given. Some confusion about TZS' last application (approved several weeks ago) was cleared up. Neuman, Barry C. - $80 - learn PL/I for system programming. Also doing text editing for another course. Has had $50 so far. Given. Schmidtt, Margaret - $100 - Text editing for several courses, approximately 60 pages. Has had $160 so far. Given. Smith, Stephen J. - $50 - to send out personalized letters to Pi Lambda Phi alumni. Do we want to fund an application that will probably cause 50 copies of letters to come out on the SpinWriter? Can they aford it themselves? Given. JSL came in during this. Zilber, John D. - $100 - 100 to 150 pages of text editing for courses. Given. SCEP (Larry Kolodny, Keimu Yi) - $250 - to format the next Course Evaluation Guide. They will be sending the files to EECS, R it, and then send it to the Dover. Previously had $554, which they used mostly to input the data. Deferred until someone comes to a meeting. / / After the meeting was ajourned, we reconvened, as the SCEP representatives arrived. There was discussion of how the previous money was used, as they were expected to produce a guide at the end of the fall term. They made these guides and sent them to the professors and the departments. Now they want to produce a guide for students, which will be distributed later this spring and next fall. Given. They plan to try to hit the MIT administration for the next round of funding. Auto totals will be added later. Total appropriations: $3975 without Coop Autoed: Student: $3925 370: $50 To Meeting: $1240, EC: $0, all Student. Coop: $170 Other Other: Ideal has a 4x4x4 cube and Games People Play has them on order. DCP will be getting one. Many planets are aligning in the morning sky. The world will be coming to an end due to the Jupiter effect tomorrow. Several musical events are taking place this month. See DCP for details. WABC, the NY AM radio station that was the number one rock station for two decades, has gone all-news. Ayn Rand and John Belushi died. RK came back from Fornicalia. The meeting was adjourned at 21:14 to birthday cake for lots of members whose birthdays fall in March. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin; proofread by G. Palter
