Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 19 April 1982 The meeting was called to order at 19:36 by William M. York. In attendance were GMP, Barmar, DCP, Lai, PLJ, DMK, JR, WMY, WER, c/, CBF, CAH, LRH, BCN, HGA, and RK. Late were: HDT, Gill, Jay, RDZ, Naha, TZS, RLL, and Taft. The minutes of the meeting of 12 April 1982 were read and accepted as corrected. Gill, HDT came in during this. Treasurer's Report: MTD Multics: $7346.11 ($1806.55 DISK) 370: ??? YTD except April 370 & April JCF: $84,076.63 Multics allocated & not spent $27,000. The SIPB is in the terminal buying business. 2 VT101's and a 212 compatible modem were ordered for users this week. WER's slide was shown at this weekend's movies. We will show it or a different one (if someone designs one) this coming weekend. We should make cards to stuff mailboxes with. WER has come up with a few changes to the current card. CBF thinks the current one is pretty bad. We should do it soon, as the term will be over in a month. Chairman's Report: Alan thinks that he isn't being much of an EC member and should be replaced. We will be having full officer elections in two weeks (the first Monday in the last month of the term), so we will just wait until then. Last Tuesday night the ASA had an "open forum" at which the ASA proposal to license and tax student organizations that charge for movies (i.e. LSC). It was a kangaroo court. The sentiment at the meeting (in WMY's opinion) was against the motion, but the ASA didn't drop the motion. There will be a general ASA meeting this Wednesday to vote on the motion. Office Report: Do we want an "InfoWorld" subscription? No. c/ defrosted the refrigerator and freezer, with the help of HGA and Alan. We got several used chairs this week. We will keep them. Some of our losing old chairs were relegated to the darkroom, and should be gotten rid of. Pens keep disappearing. On the other hand, we got tape dispensers and masking tape. The fire extinguisher was recharged. If you play with it you will be forced to work for Wang. MacNamara's book was ordered. CBF thinks there is too much stuff in the office. CAH suggests that one problem is that we have too many chairs because of meetings; perhaps we should have the meeting somewhere else. People should remove at least a cubic-foot of their own stuff. CBF suggests that Coke-Com go away. Bicycles also are taking up alot of room. Desk space disappears because people leave stuff on the desks too much. Bicycle riders should park elsewhere, like in Campus Patrol bicycle compounds. CAH suggests that the second desk (with the Boat Anchor on it) be moved next to the first, and that another drawer be used for applications and documentation, since we are running out of room in the one desk file drawer. Perhaps we should modify the desk so that it can have two file drawers, or we could get a small file cabinet to place between the two front desks. c/ suggests that we wait until the end of the term before doing anything. There will be an office space subcommittee meeting in the near future. Jay, RDZ, Naha came in during this. Naha turned the two broken brown chairs into one brown chair and one pile of junk. Computer Services: Someone should delete convert_date_to_binary_. Shift 3 is not as expensive as we have been leading people to believe. People have been spending about the same amount on shift 2 as shift 3. Barmar and CBF cleaned up the Student start_up. Telecommunications Report: The terminal concentrator is in the office, and terminals are running on it. It will be moved to EECS and it will serve the EECS offices until we can use it. RLL is not here, so we don't know what the current state of the microwave link is. There was also a lack of communication between Dennis Baron and RLL about the fourth Student Center line. We will requisition the fix for this line. One Z19 terminal came back from Heath repair last week. Another is still there. The chairman will talk to RAR about availability of Z19 service contracts. J9 took the Teleray to ESP. Next House now has a Vadic and a Bell 113, but the 113 is on a broken line. CBF has a letter to the officers of New House, MacGregor, Next House, and East Campus warning them about the increased possibility of theft with the Vadic modems. These should be delivered. Senior House wants to know how much they are liable for their rented Bell 113. We don't know, since we have never been billed for a stolen Bell 113. CBF doesn't think we should order exclusion switches on the phones for the Vadics. He thinks that we should leave them in the open until we can get the auto-dial option added. Unfortunately, WER has already ordered three phones with exclusion switches. Some people also seem to be against the auto-dial option. Exclusion switches are an extra $50 on the installation fee, and the auto-dial option is $160. We should see how Chuck Libby feels about spending $300. Gill is concerned about whether we should be worrying about upgrading the Student Center Vadics, since we should be getting the concentrator in there sometime. CBF thinks that we could then use the auto-dial modems on the concentrator. H19's can be used on CMS with the Series/1. We should produce a sheet that tells users how to use it. Someone in the infirmary would like to use his account. He would like us to make a terminal and coupler available for him. Perhaps we should lend him the one on the broken line in the Student Center. He should realize that it would be subject to removal at any point should we need it. RK suggests that we ask Wes Burner to lend him one of the Center's TI735's. Motion to authorize lending him the Z19 if we cannot get him any other one. Passes. TZS came in during this. What should we tell the person from the Property Office about the lost coupler? WER has been telling him that we are still looking for it. He wants to know when we expect to find it. Perhaps their list of serial numbers is incorrect. Someone (CAH?) will compare their list to ours. Publications Report: Senior House's Emacs manual is still in the office. Form B's and B.1's were picked up. Other: The ArcMac is on the ChaosNet. It has a "time" server (as opposed to "TIME") that returns the date/time in ASCII. Justin Marble is doing a thesis on the environment at CCC. The Tech is buying computerized typesetting equipment. They are planning to make use of the campus networks. They should be encouraged to plan for the future, like being able to read the Tech from the ChaosNet. Tech Talk is thinking about switching to computerized typesetting using compose. The Japanese Ministry of Education is providing grants to graduating engineers who want to go to Japan. Ask TZS for details. Applications: Melville, Raj - $30 - Sending out job application letters. Has had $200 so far. Given. Schmitt, Maggie - $100 - UROP to analyze survey information. Has had $310 so far for text editing for courses. Given, contingent on UROP letter. Seroussi, Richard - WARNING - Doing Cambridge Food Coop inventory sheets. He says he will stop. RLL came in during this. Total appropriations: $1240 without Coop Autoed: Student: $1110 370: $0 To Meeting: $130, EC: $0, all Student. Coop: $75 Other Other: The DELETE key on the office Z19 is labeled REPEAT. Jay is waiting for us to receive a bank statement and a notice about Wednesday's ASA meeting. The ASA Exec Board voted 4-0 to drop the motion to tax for movies. Show up Wednesday for the vote at the ASA general meeting, just in case. TZS will be having a Sushi/Hitchhiker's Guide party. Let her know when a good time is. Bill Hoffman interviewed Jay about the LSC movie monopoly. It was created because two organizations lost their shirts from showing movies and was not at the request of LSC. RK is planning a trip to PA this weekend. Taft took delivery on his new Porsche this weekend and is breaking it in. Honeywell filled their new Software Development Center in Phoenix with VIP7803 terminals attached to a Multics. These are like the VIP7801's at CISL, except that they do not have a DELETE key and have one of the worst keyboard layouts in the world. The last night of "As You Like It" is tomorrow. WMY saw "Victor, Victoria" and it was good. Jay saw "Cat People" and it was bad. Several people went to see "Fantasia" yesterday. WMY was stuck in one of the worst traffic jams in New York City this morning for three hours. It was probably because the toll price changed from $1 to $1.25 today. c/ was sick over the weekend, and now she thinks that she gave it to Alan. Taft came in during this. Several people went to a Mike Oldfield concert on Friday. The meeting was adjourned at 21:59. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin.
