Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of October 29, 1984 The meeting was called to order at 19:37 by JR. In attendance were BCN, JR, WHBH, Lee, Aya, DJB, and three prospectives, Jim Buonora, Simson Garfinkel, and John Kohl We were going to elect Simson, but not enough people showed up. However, if we declare enough people inactive, maybe we can. FDW goes first (for real). The following people are then declared inactive for a week: BG, Carla, CLM, DMC, DRM, RDZ. The EC will meet next week to change the Constitution. Please be there if you are an EC member. Now we can have the election. Simson will not quit the Tech, he does know how to take an application, and he wants to be a member of the SIPB because he wants to legitimize his Athena hacking, get more status in Athena, expand his horizons and much, much more. He does not give the canonical answer. There is an election and Simson is elected. His abbreviation is Simsong or SLG for short. The meeting is suspended for an EC meeting. JR wants to start an active full but not voting category for people who don't come to meetings. If you miss four meetings in a row, you become non-voting. To get back to voting standing, an in-person request at a meeting is required. "Voting privileges as described in the Constitution will only be given to active full voting members. An active full voting member is an active full member who has attended one of the last four SIPB meetings. An active full non-voting member may become voting by an in-person request at a SIPB meeting." -- JR's revised statement. "A member who has not attended the last four meetings may be declared non-voting by the chairman." -- BCN's amendment. Also, "computation of quoroms should be based on active full voting members and not just active full." The motion passes 4-1. The regular meeting is resumed. TREASURER'S REPORT The treasurer is lost. There is no one to pay the bills. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT See above for elections and amendments. ATHENA REPORT Steve Lerman has decided to dedicate the Student Center to unrestricted student use starting sometime in the spring. Registration without paper is now feasible. Disc space was seen as a limiting factor on the number of users. We mentioned that are 1700 SIPB accounts with 100MB of disc. The soft limit will be .5MB and the hard limit will be 1MB (expandable if necessary) for Athena users. BCN saw a Building 38 cluster where everyone was on the same VAX and other VAXes were idle. This is a waste and will be remedied at some point. The password file will need 3000 entries and a quick lookup. We would really like to see a question asked at the first logon about the default protection for files. What should we do about graduate students? Perhaps accounts on Multics would be the answer. In any case, we should keep our Multics funds, since some problems need more system resources than an Athena machine can offer. All students with course accounts will get Student Center accounts automatically and a grace period to transfer files. Spring course accounts will be allocated to non-Student Center clusters. There will be 40 Student Center terminals. 6.035 propagation may be a problem. There is a positive feeling in the air at Athena. Simson does not know who Saltzer is since he doesn't read The Tech. MS-DOS is being considered as a replacement to UNIX. Saltzer does not want MIT in the operating system business anymore. Saltzer will be a good influence probably. PUBLICATIONS REPORT We need more NETS and NUMS. COMPUTER SERVICES We have a half-working lpr (laser printer) server on Multics. The 9700 Scribe support should be working in a week. Next weekend, JR will try to write a DFS server. Anyone who wants to help is welcome to come. The meeting was adjourned at 21:00. Minutes taken and submitted by WHBH.
