Minutes of SIPB meeting of May 14, 1984 Meeting called to order by JR at 19:32 In attendance were Carla, Amy, RK, Aya, DFM, WHBH, JR, JIS, SL Late: PSR, DMC, RF, CBF, FDW Treasurer's Report The requisition book got lost. We have a new one. We added money to all the projects. PSR and DMC enter at this point Chairman's Report Nothing important. Athena Report RF claims the open program works. PSR noticed some people on Charon doing 6.035. JIS saw some people playing Rogue which is even less useful than 6.035. RF comes in here and proposes that 6.035 and Rogue should be illegal unless at least one terminal is free. Eventually, JIS will help put the rest of Athena on Chaosnet so people won't have to use Charon for getting onto Chaosnet. FDW is also here. The Athena discussion moves to SIPB members downstairs instead of in the office. Office Report Aya has made some office improvements. They include a new poster, a clean blackboard, a straightened-up bookshelf and filed applications. Computer Services JR suggests moving cutoffs up to 7/1/84. Discussion of request_extension takes place. JIS questions usefulness of white sheets. JIS brings up question of SIPB's lifetime: will Athena wipe us out? PSR thinks we could have a role in giving out Athena accounts. JIS also says that the "bean-counters" are gone. We shouldn't worry about spending money and we should put all our paperwork online. RK flames about bad software. How much paperwork can we get rid of? JIS thinks we should keep form B. If we do automate registration, we'd better make the program damn reliable (an order of magnitude above process). Aya makes motion to eliminate paperwork except for form B starting in fiscal 1985. Throw away (or stack) continuation notices. Motion passes. CBF arrives. JIS tells us about "whois". Ex: whois Smith tells about all Smiths Back to 7/1/84 cutoff issue. JR moves to extend all current cutoffs to 7/1/84. Motion is passed. JR then moves to put 10 or so dollars in each user's account on 7/1/84 so they can request_extension. This also passes. Telecommunications Report PSR suggests putting modems in the switch. RK suggests buying terminals instead. We need to know how much money is left in our capital budget and only RDZ knows this. BG enters at this point. PSR moves to buy modems and terminals. RDZ phones in with a rough capital budget figure: -$200 Discussion moves to Athena communications across Mass Ave. There are six pretty ducts under Mass Ave. but some of west side of campus needs to be dug up to make Student Center connection. This digging should go fast once it starts. PSR moves to buy VT102's if there is money (his previous motion was never seconded). BG has left. Motion carries. Flaming about office phones and long distance capabilities (this is actually office report material). Motion is made to give 7760 capability to make long distance calls chargeable to an MIT account. JIS believes snafu repetition is unlikely. Motion fails 5-0. Terminal move has not been made (Senior House and PKT to SAE). We flame about this. SL trashes a piece of equipment. A letter to living groups has been written. RK and CBF are against sending out the letter tomorrow because they want people to read it first and living groups are not ready to deal with the terminal sales issue at this point in the term. PSR moves to send the letter on Wednesday night if EC approves. Motion carries. There are broken VT100's that Aya has to take care of. Other Other Other JIS is funding the daiquiri party on Friday night at Next House 2W at 8:00 p.m. 2W will be disintegrated next year. To-meeting applications Just approve them says JR.
