In attendance were Voting members: amgreene jik rfrench tron monkey jcbourne bjaspan jh shahid jtidwell amdehon lnp qjb amehta dkk Associate members: srz Non-voting members: Prospectives: klee leira warlord cqc mlwiese bigler.studentad masuchak Guests: kevles Treasurer's Report: LSC.... CokeComm Report: There is Coke. People are happy. Tentative numbers are also happy.... Balance (as of this morning) $353.99 Total Deposits (on sheets) $257.26 Order Received (this afternoon) $154.54 [ lnp ... masuchak ] Chairman's Report: New prospectives!!! masuchak (Mitesh A Suchak) [ qjb ... amehta ] klee (Klee) Office Report: vt100s are sittin' aroun'. Let's move 'em to the top of the cabinets. Let's get some markers for the whiteboard! Yeah! Wow! Neat idea! Black cabinet is still in the hall. Jik suggests using it to distribute docs. Would disappear too fast. How about a list of publications? Let's experiment.... Kevles suggests Athena free-docs as well. She will arrange what she can. [ dkk ] [ larugsi (briefly) ] Kevles, as Athena liason to SIPB, has asked to be added to the sipb-minutes list. They're world-readable, so we might as well add her. Athena Report: Nice little sun called theodore.mit.edu. It likes to knock off all the portmaps on bldg. 1 machines. Another in 54. Another in 1 thinks it's the gateway. It's wrong. CEG is losing. Jik loves Athena. VS2000's have been panicking right and left. PitManager rides again! Computer Services: Jik has a beef to pick. rrn died last week, because new software was installed w/o keeping the old binaries and they had to recompile the software. gcc and pcc do not coexist pleasantly. And the people who did the reinstallation then disappeared and when they returned were rude to users who innocently queried when news would be back. Beacon is now running again (with reset pointers on some large number of newsgroups). (Flamage about responsibility to provide services vs. volunteering.) Athena deactivated lots of charon accounts (kerberos, hesiod, post-office). Major lossage. The line in the deployment report about SIPB providing fourth-floor services was "premature." jtkohl reformatted the Athens drive and added it to the SIPB cell. += 500M. At the next meeting, Rich Carreiro (Amiga Users Group) will be here. Telecommunications Report: New modems and connections are rumoured to be planned. dialup3 is up and running. The "unfortunate sarcasm" in the dialup{,2} motd was removed at Ron Orcutt's request. [``6.3B, Athena's latest (but not greatest) release.''] Publications Report: q.v., supra. Lots of people have been taking Inessential Guides. qjb says "this week." Athena's on-line help (olh) is growing by leaps and bounds. We should try to get SIPB documentation added to it. Sharon is volunteered. (Hi, Share! :-) Librarian Report: Fiche would be at our expense unless we are willing to let the fichers keep it. We can ask the provost or president's office for a grant. R/O Report: It's dead, Jim. Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. IAP Report: October is IAP Planning Month. Just thought you'd want to know. Anand is here to ask about the C course that he was volunteered for last week. He's willing to teach it if he gets lots of help. Will Athena do a LaTeX minicourse? Kevles doesn't know. Other: Secretary is finally taking minutes on AFS. Ask about tinyMUD. On second thought, don't. ``You will discover, when working in your team projects, that the most important thing in programming is knowing whom to blame.'' - Guttag, 6.170 Carol will be back for a week from 6 Oct (her bday). Then she'll be gone until the end of November. Register panics on the pika machines. Some public machines lose as well. (shifting to Athena report) Other Other: NYTimes started Vol. CXXXIX today and celebrated by raising its price to 40 cents. Thursday's issue will be Number 48,000. Very few prospectives tonight. First week of classes has taken its toll. Sunset was beautiful tonight. We stood on the couch and watched. G&SP has a cast of over 30. The meeting was adjourned at 20:23:02. Minutes taken and submitted by amgreene the wonderpup and rfrench.
