Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/25/93 The meeting was called to order at 19:32 by warlord. In attendance were Voting members: warlord(9661) mkgray(16590) jweiss(11268) shabby(18271) tytso(15806) ghudson(3622) mhpower(7783) marthag(16594) | autumn(17517) marc(8888) kkkken(7673) web(7056) Associate members: gamadrid(3598) | dkk(10993) sidlives(11711) yandros(12264) jsl(609) Non-voting members: Prospectives: fastcart(12653) foner(31971) x1kaye(5415) jee_hbm(31902) nygren(1008) yckao(3834) nsanders(1710) abbe(31591) sorokin(2176) | druid(1981) smit(18369) Guests: Treasurer's Report: Seems that the LaTeX book is going to be bound by last Friday. ghudson(3622) will get it later this week. Related to the Mac thing you'll read about later. Can we get a copy of Think C for the Mac? We've okay'ed the money, but haven't gotten it because we may be about to get it another way, and because yandros(12264) has been lame. We may also be about to get copies over through the license server. We're still going to buy it, but we're going to decide later whether to keep it ourselves or donate it to IS. Chairman's Report: New prospectives: yckao jee_hbm nigrin | druid. thanks to mkgray(16590) and shabby(18271) for the extra prospectives.... Apparently, they mentioned SIPB at the end of the hacking class last week. A prospective of the SIPB should read the upcoming SIPB prospectives FAQ which gamadrid(3598) and yandros(12264) are currently working on. Officer elections in two weeks, warlord(9661) will send out mail. Remember that the officers need to have been members for at least one term. Office Report: Machines are expected RSN (tomorrow). We know that we are getting a color RS/6000. We need to decide where they are going and what they will be called. mkgray(16590) thinks that the RS/6000 should be oliver becuase he was a hacker and the RS/6000 will be the fastest machine. Straw poll: How many people think that the RS/6000 should be named Milquetoaste? marc(8888): What are our choices? warlord(9661): Milquetoaste! mkgray(16590) moves that deathtongue be given many of bill's names. And Milquetoaste be added to the name space. We're losing yaz. But the motion gets recalled. The vote is now, which name is going away. We're losing yaz. We're losing portnoy. This was a very unorthodox vote in which associate and active members votes count 1, and prospective votes get 1. yandros(12264) tries to subvert the vote by making ludicrous comments and suggestions. warlord(9661) declares: I can do what I want! marc(8888): No you cannot! All hell breaks loose. Steve does have a cname of Steve! (In case you didn't know.) warlord(9661): The number of machines is going to remain about constant? foner(31971): About? warlord(9661): Well, approximately. Somewhere around here, a rather crazy vote happened to name the RS/6000 oliver. also, we have to change the hesiod entry for webster. snork will become the new webster server. oliver will be the RS/6000, and binkley and milquetoaste are the vaxen. toner cartridges: foner(31971) says that they have no recycle value, but x1kaye(5415) says that they _do_ have value. We'll let x1kaye(5415) take care of them. MIT Computing Report: sipb will attempt to start coordinating mac development on campus. yandros(12264) and web(7056) are the contact people for this. yandros(12264) made a proposal about a week ago about the sipb-cruft locker. He has heard lots of nothing about it. He wants to create a locker, separate from the sipb locker which is not duplicated int he athena cell, and is probably not on both servers. This locker will contains stuff that we want to provide, but we don't want to support. yandros(12264) doesn't want a symlink-farm, but others do. warlord(9661) feels that we need to be sure that things don't break leaving the user lost. A shell script explaining the situation to the users is proposed. This proposal turns into a motion, passes many to something. yandros(12264) proposes that the new locker be named portnoy. jweiss(11268) says that test-dialup is testing dialup configuration changes. yandros(12264) wants to know where our new disk is? Computer Services: Reread MIT Computing Report. warlord(9661) wanted to install 7.4 on the sun, but something was wrong with the nfs server. Now warlord(9661) thinks we should wait, because the new Athena machines will only be coming with Solaris. tytso(15806) adds that there will likely be a usable Athena Solaris port in the near future. It is decided not to wait, so warlord(9661) will put 7.4 onto Deathtongue. Picayune cutover is happening on Wednesday. So get rid of your bedfellow stuff now. Now! NOW! Talk to marthag(16594) or yandros(12264) is you have questions. Guest accounts are getting nuked, really soon. If you have a problem, talk to web(7056) and warlord(9661). For now, the accounts will be deactivated, but the disk space will not be cleared for a while. News is coming in really slowly today. Expire times on Enterpoop will have to be cut-down. People will probably notice this. SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: Rosebud is down, no, it's back up, but it's having problems. The backup of Ronald-Ann is done, but Rosebud is not. Publications Report: We have Iness. AFS again. There are more under the printer. Thanks, 18369. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: mkgray(16590)'s classes went well. Lots of people came and then showed up at the SIPB meeting. CokeComm Report: Running low on Coke, we will have more later on in the week. Other: There is no other. Other Other: CD player is getting fixed. Should be a couple of weeks. jweiss(11268) passed his swim test today. smit passed phase two, but he hasn't passed phase one. tytso(15806) is now over a quarter century old. There is no other Other Other. Frisbee Report: There may be frisbee. Little Elves Report: Little elves were reported editting the minutes after the secretary was finished with them. Any thing strange should be attributed to us, we mean, them. The meeting was adjourned at 20:40. Minutes taken and submitted by gamadrid(3598).
