Its only $45.. LaTeX was 60. Users come in for networking questions. Its useful and informative. BSD Networking. Any objections to purchasing this? Motion to allocate $60 for purchase of this. ghudson will do legwork. 9-0-1. Motion passes. Cable for the gig drive? Shabby has been lame. Chairman's Report: Obnoxious office. We are here to serve the user community, not to alienate them. During the day, the CD player needs to be LOW. Be careful saying things with users in the office. It's a cool place, but people should be able to get work done here. If you can hear the music in the machine room, then it's too loud! Unwritten rule: Volume shouldn't go above '2' during main hours. Use discression. Be civil! (Over zephyr and in person). On a positive note, people have been a lot better with users of EZ! (We haven't laughed at them as much). Usually it can be answered by EZ. EZ -> LaTeX script? Conversion utilities are always useful. (LaTeX -> EZ script???) People should ask a user to ask their question before sending them off to another member. Office Report: The office is Full! We have the name OPUS (.mit.edu)... For things like portables, etc. Its IP addr is 18.70.0.252, and should be used for short, squat, flying portables. We should make this a service for people to "plug in". We should make sure that there is an empty drop available so that this becomes easier to do. warlord and dmitri will deal. Should we install gnu finger on the office machines? A log of flamage. Should we do this? 9-4-6. It passed, but people are still talking about it. Quiche: We need to get a better video card for it. We discussed this 9 months ago, and decided to do it, but we didn't decide what to get. White ballot: "We have decided to do something about this". sal has the goahead to find something. The CD's have the re-alphabatized. Last name of artist, or first name of group. moody blues is under 'm', eric clapton is under 'c'. Two things: both HP's. Whats up? mkgray talked to colin patterson. Its a maybe. Other HP? Still has a bogus OS. Who is supposed to get it? We need a bootable tape! Maybe we can talk to someone at HP to try to get one? Someone suggests porting Linux to the HP. sidlives will deal. We have a printer (loosely speaking). We need to decide what to do with it. Who thinks its worth spending money for a printer? It would be a service to be able to print from the Mac. mhbraun will do some legwork. Its reasonable that we might be able to get something from Athena. PostScript Hacking, Large Jobs, Error Handlers, etc. are good reasons. Have a printer in the office? 10-4-4. Reinstall the door sensor? Serial cable might not be there. 10-6-4. Deal with it. MIT Computing Report: Servers are being move the the new subnet in E40. Moira propagation hasn't happened. Computer Services: No cable for the 1Gig drive. Shabby will deal tomorrow. beacon. It should go away. 2 services running: discuss and UUCP. Moving meetings twice? How to deal. Old meetings that haven't been touched since, like, 1991. UUCP Smart Routing! Meetings should get moved RSN, and UUCP will be dealt when warlord has time to learn (i.e., after thesis is done). Can we make it point to a CNAME? Does discuss cannonicalize the hostname? We have no service contracts on the Vax IIs. No objections. News: 1 Gig drive in E40-00?.. ACS is ackquiring it for us. It is for foreign language newsgroups. Need to ask jis about service contract. So long as we dont suppress foreign language groups for lack of disk space, its ok. honor any request or whims of news maintainers. Run some threading program. Inn has nove support. We are just too lazy to compile it. project.nihongo and project.zhongwen should be freed in a couple of weeks. Bloom-charon: someone asked why "black box" didn't work. (black box is attach). aeneas was having problems with large packet sizes hosing the network. Not running NFS because of this. It will have to when it becomes charon! quiche is running linux! A lot of Athena stuff is running on it, and its coming along. NET/BSD.. Like 386bsd. Raeburn is going to install it on quiche, too! Should we change this to netbsd instead of OS/2? Go for it. Secondary nameservice? NOT! SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: warlord will deal, since marc hasn't done it. It was not done last week. If you want to learn to do a backup, talk to someone who knows how. rosebud vicepb almost filled up! People should be careful! Publications Report: Out of iLatex. Sekullbe will deal tomorrow. SIPB newsletter. First issue will come out R/O of next year. Write articles, and send them to mkgray and dcctdw. TeX fonts for display? Bert was having problems. Cannot use xdvi. xtex? bert will look into this after finals. What will be going into the newsletter? Any article for any range from the one-time user to the sipb prospective. R/O Report: If you are interested in doing ClearingHouse, see yandros. After finals... IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: We have coke. The pusher is here. We have ice-cream. Thanks to guido! "mkgray: who is guido?" Take cans down! Other: Maybe people should think about what to talk about and push things to other meetings? It probably wont happen, but its a nice thought. We need to deal with things offline. Next year is the 25th aniversary.. We should plan this now. Should do something next June. If you want to hunt down alumni, start thinking about it now! Talk to eichin. (Or send mail to nancy). UROP available at Media Lab abbe got a UROP there. There is a clueless user's mailing list. Forge mail from a user and send it to the request list, and say "subscribe clueless" in it. Keep the front of the office clean! Other Other: Bottom five slots for the "gosh, Im impressed" list are still open. Tendonitis is annoying, and CTS is even more annoying. Add a SIPB Typing Health Report? If you want to get wrist braces, get rollerblades. The meeting was adjourned at 21:02. Minutes taken and submitted by warlord.
