Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/24/94


  The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by ghudson.

  Treasurer's Report:

    He's not here.

    No books have been picked up.

    There is a book by Bruce Schneier. "Applied Cryptography" $44.95.
    There is a discount seller, supposedly.  Seconded. Passes
    many-1-0.

  Chairman's Report:

    He just walked in.

    Elections in two weeks.

  Office Report:

    We have an X terminal..  We need to add a segment to the ethernet.
    Jweiss will take a look after the meeting.  It's a DEC vt1200
    prototype X terminal.  The intent is to run Xinfo (cview?)

  MIT Computing Report:

    A number of power hits.

    Resnet is up and running, with many many hosts.

    Many linux questions.  We found a slackware (linux distribution)
    security hole with ftp.

  Computer Services:

    bobmacke is creating a project list of all SIPB members. Send him
    email with the projects you are working on.  Soon.  This Means
    You.

    News is down..  It buckled under the load.  ghudson is building a
    new innd to limit the number of connections.  Jis is working on
    getting a 5000/200 tonight, and will hopefully be here soon.

    Rei, warlord, and sgw met with dmlibby at the Alumni Association
    to talk about an alumni server.  Are people willing to help set up
    and/or maintain this server.  What does the AA want?  Maybe we
    should get Barry Shein to run this for us?  How about if we get
    SIPB to set up the system with the agreement that the AA will find
    someone to maintain it after some amount of time.  please talk to
    eri, warlord, or mjbauer if you want to help in any way.

    Discuss on charon gets backed up into AFS nightly. There is a cron
    job on charon that backs it up into the SIPB AFS cell.  If we want
    this to set this up on picayune we may have disk problems.

    Jeff called.  He will be bringing a new machine to the office
    tonight.  It needs to be upgraded.  People will work on it
    tonight, hopefully.  He asked if people will be around for "a
    while".

  SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report:

    It's running.

  Publications Report:

    iProspectives? iProjects?  mkgray wants something like this.
    There is abbe's letter and other stuff.  Bleed on it, and send
    comments to mkgray.

    We are out of iLatex.  Can someone get copies?  mjacknis
    volunteered to get copies.  Get this with 3 holes.  100 copies.

    rjbarbal wrote a one-page guide to wandering the Web.  Supposedly
    there are errors in it.  Also, he wants to write a guide to
    writing html.

  IAP Report:

    It's almost over.

    In the past week, we had the WWW class and HTML class.  edburt
    came to the html class and then gave a lecture to a group of
    physicists about it.  lsc's .plan file is not in html!  There are
    also at least 3 WWW servers on Resnet.

    The PostScript class went well, says rjbarbal.  Attendence
    declined over the days.

  CokeComm Report:

    We are out of coke.  srz drank the last can.  We should remind Da
    Jerk that we're out.

    Anyone interested in maintaining news should talk to marthag.

  Other Other:

    We found a new poster.  See Deatht\o:ngue, Live!

    raeburn spoke to Mary Chung.  She is still looking for a place in
    Central Square.

    Ckclark asked an OLC question about Mary Chung (no, not the
    freshman!).  The response was amusing.

    Photographs of SIPB members?  mjacknis wants to do this.  Does
    anyone have any comments?  Can we put them online?  SIPB trading
    cards?

    Keep the office open from 9-5?  mjacknis is subsequently flamed
    for making the suggestion.

    Power is out at Random and 3 block radius.  mkgray:"What did you
    do?" A truck hit a pole.

    mwhitson is wearing the same shirt as when he became a
    member. Eww.  Did he take it off since then?  Yes.
