Chairman's Report: introductions are passed around elections next week. mkgray will send mail, it should be a fun meeting. "Hi, Lou!" mkgray will discuss something now. It's the mystique of the machine room, and the unknown qualities of how you get bits. He will put on a tour after the meeting. Now he will ramble even more. The way in which people become "in the know" which is not anything that magic [when I became a prospective, I didn't know anything, but I came here and became involved, and I liked zephyr because I was a freshman so I taught my first class over IAP on zephyr, and they membered me. I didn't have a Major clue... gradually got one]... umm... he goes on like this for a while... the point of this is to encourage people to ask lots of questions. [ALL ONE DISCUSSION HERE [ ghudson wonders how much mail should go to sipb-staff [ about services? summaries have gone out, but not much [ else. yoav: the main bug is that not everyone can [ read the discuss meetings. ghudson: they [ [*-maintainers, linux-dev, et al] are high-volume. [ yandros: we can give the bits to lots more people, but [ can't make them public. sorokin: it won't help out a [ lot... [ [ martha: the general rule with discuss meetings [ when they were created was anyone who was on gsipb at [ the time they were created, and people can ask to be [ added. the lists aren't world-readable because the [ security problems with them are discussed before [ solutions are available... [ [ mkgray: as a prospective someone told me to look at [ stuff in discuss, and I didn't know how. chad and I [ will also do a class on how to build software, and [ classes like this are needed, including discuss-type [ stuff. [ [ ghudson still wants an answer to his question [ [ tlyu wants to automate making these meetings available [ to sipb in general [ [ dcctdw: there are two issues being discussed. [ 1. where do we send mail? "clearly we should just [ send it to the appropriate list." 2. teaching issue... [ [ sorokin: let's get a vote from the prospectives... [ [ aragorn: I don't see many people asking for help, more [ of sipb members asking for people to do projects [ [ mkgray: ask questions, all of you! if you hear [ something you don't understand, ask about it [ [ rjbarbal: a few issues. 1. keeping members informed [ 2. keeping prospectives informed 3. a summary every [ day, sent out, like cfyi? yandros: not enough volume [ for every day... rjbarbal: every $time_period [ [ jweiss: the cfyi thing is written by whoever's on [ pager duty. sipb would have a problem because we [ don't have someone involved with all of these [ projects. marthag: all this stuff should go in [ computer services [ [ gamadrid: a couple points... since we don't want a [ sipb beeper, [sipb beeper? but I...] we have a whole [ group of 6.034-people to get together and write an [ expert system [yaaaaaaaaargh! from the audience] [ mkgray gavels. [ [ straw poll of members and prospectives: 3 choices [ [ 1. not enough mail about services to generic lists [ 2. right amount [ 3. too much [ [ vote is some to a little less to 1. Office Report: it's crowded. the rug was shampooed, and it's lighter now. ghudson: we have in the past week or so lost the black hardbound latex book, a lex/yacc book, and a pair of scissors. people should be more careful about theft. the office was left open once. it's a pit. rjbarbal will clean AGAIN, throwing out lots of stuff, that we already decided to throw out. The office czars should reallocate drawers soon... gamadrid: can we get our books lojacked? MIT Computing Report: jweiss: feininger, a fileserver, was losing last week. It was mysterious - everything was fine, except it wouldn't give out files. hockney was losing last week, not sure what caused that, either; suspicions of the disk filling up... ed [the cray] shuts down on june 30 "they're shipping it to moscow with the rt's" yoav: the cluster is open again, and it's wired with utp, and the vaxen are all gone. yay. the vaxen are currently in e40. rjbarbal: test-3100 is a sparcstation currently. mhpower: hayden opens tomorrow with sparc classics Computer Services: marthag: news was upgraded to a less-losing machine after it totally lost last week. We're having hardware problems, so dec field service will call this week - whoever answers that phone call should track down the news maintainers (mhpower, ghudson, or marthag - or send mail to usenet if they're not online) and tell them WHEN THEY'RE going to visit jtkohl: something with new spiffy latex macros bobmacke: send me your project info ghudson: lots of people are using the linux-athena. mkgray: we've got xcluster now on portnoy, the xstation autumn: you can install linux from nfs now from ninja. mkgray: big tour of the machine room. SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: backup's running, it died earlier, and it's been restarted. Publications Report: iAthena picked up by ghudson, iLatex picked up by mjacknis abbe: we're out of iZephyr? no, we have them in a box cleverly not labeled... we need some iLinuxAthena. Sal was going to deal, and still will. It's available through help, too, and it's being served to the www, by eric nygren, a prospective with a www server on his linux box. mkgray: iProjects is being worked on mkgray: I'm taking pictures for the picture thingie (picture board?) They'll be on the www... Little Elves Report: Are we suspecting them for the Latex book theft? no. R/O Report: ha! IAP Report: it's over. mkgray misses it. tlyu: turn in your eval forms if you ran an activity. CokeComm Report: we have coke. yay george. Other: warlord: I saw a decstation X server hit a lot of swap, it wasn't pretty shabby: more than 50% of OS/2 machines on resnet are at Random. xteddy is in outland. xjake is available somehwere. Other Other: autumn: I got my first nerd kit today. rjbarbal: classes started there's a linux athena mailing list, called linux-athena. soon to be released. mjacknis: I bled on ilatex. three sipb members taking harmony & counterpoint at least one taking harmony & counterpoint II the koosh launcher looks neat. it may work soon... thanks, monty megjen WAS in the office at one point in the meeting, so she IS a prospective, I guess. Gratuitous Shabby comment: svalente came in at 20:45, way after the meeting was over. He actually showed up when srz showed up, but it was too crowded for him to get in. The meeting was adjourned at 20:14:30. Minutes taken and submitted by shabby.
