Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 05/02/94 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by sorokin. In attendance were Voting members: mkgray bert shabby tlyu harrisj mwhitson nocturne sorokin abbe warlord beaners ghudson | rjbarbal nygren yandros Associate members: jcb mhpower jweiss srz Non-voting members: Prospectives: cat grisha jhbrown dimon dimdim jefreypu krill | midum Guests: katzchen Secretary's Gratuitous Pre-meeting Comment: Anyone got a leather holepunch? Treasurer's Report: Treasurer's here and tired. Chairman's Report: shabby is not the chairman shabby nominates cat for nomination... friendly amendment turns it into nomination for membership. many-0-rjbarbal. Office Report: sorokin: Clean out your cans. We don't want roaches. we have a mac. yandros: the mac's not connected, we need to get the adaptor that's behind a maze of customer service for the monitor. We also need $100 for the AUI to Apple AUI cable to get it on the net because Apple sucks. For this price we can downgrade to the 6100-60AV instead of 7100-66, and still be okay. The 6100 will come with a monitor and a cool AV package. We'd save no money, just get a monitor and the AV stuff.. yandros will deal with sidegrading our Mac to the 6100. 486 status? ghudson: Buying computers really sucks. We could buy an Optiplex sans monitor for $3100 from the MCC. 486dx4-100. Or buy from Dell directly with a monitor, 1M VRAM instead of 2, same price. Third option: punt Dell and buy from PC's for everyone, but they don't stock 486dx4-100's, but we'd save $500... sorokin: we need to get the req in in the next couple weeks. ghudson: My inclination is to go with the MCC. yandros: service? ghudson: PCfE is 1-year warranty, Dell is ... Lots of discussion goes on here... It's fast talking. ghudson's recommendation is to go with MCC. sorokin: anyone have any really good objections? ghudson: I'm gonna go do what I want and buy it from the MCC. Exabyte? mwhitson's working on it. ETA for a proposal: Tuesday. shabby was lame and didn't do the naming scheme thing. he will continue this 'til after finals. bert: meadow's low on toner. When we replace the toner cartridge it'll be the last one in there, we should deal. Or we could deal now. marc said he'd deal with toner cartridges, someone tell him about the box with the UPS sticker under bill-the-cat's table. Who wants to deal with toner cartridges? dimon will. It should be around $100, it'll fit in our budget. jweiss moves for $250 for two toner cartridges. white-ballot. "yay." dale was going to deal with big staples, and didn't. the chair will beat him up. MIT Computing Report: The frame relay fell down this afternoon, while warlord was asleep. jweiss heard a rumor that said there was an open circuit in back-bay that caused it. jweiss: Last week po6 fell over. several times. The postmasters aren't quite sure what the problem is, they added memory and disabled from for a while. so was zpopnotify. mhpower: umm, some people might want to read the last few transactions in the rel-eng discuss meeting on menelaus. [mhpower declines to say anything useful. mhpower admits that he is trying to spread rumor and create trouble. :-) ask him if you really care, which we think you don't. -- sorokin] yandros: Athena is going to change its help setup from olh to the web. It looks like when you type help on athena it's going to run a program out of the SIPB locker. [Mosaic] Computer Services: ghudson: there was a complaint about a posting bug on my new nntp server so I backed out of it. I'll fix it and it'll go back in next Saturday. jweiss: The default athena cellservdb contains the list of primary afs servers for each cell. It now has four addresses for the SIPB cell, the ones on 18.181 and the ones on 18.70. It's a preemptive strike, people will get errors but it's okay. yandros: Web server hasn't been changed over. bert resigned from webmaster and we aren't sure what the hangups are on there. ghudson: I'd like to see charon freed up. ghudson: kim sat down in E40 and wanted to talk to me about the hardware SIPB was getting, but it turns out she doesn't have to be involved. what does all this mean? I/S communication may be less than spiffy, but it looks like everything is cool. SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: mhpower: The backup's running, it's running 37 times slower than normal (it'll take 6 days) because it tries to connect to the servers that don't exist... people suggest to back out of the change to cellservdb on hodge. mhpower will deal. yandros: I did a build last night and filled up a partition on rosebud... It could have been really bad but it wasn't. tlyu: project.macbsd and project.sipb-cruft vanished recently. yandros: more will disappear when we (jweiss and I) look around and see what's old. Publications Report: we have pubs. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: die he must die, the jerk must die. oh wait, he has coke in his car. nevermind. It's on its way. Other: sorokin: Tich Tolk want ad reads: Technical expert to write competent articles for The Tech, as per SIPB's recent motion that The Tech write technically competent articles. If you know the difference between 'ktelnet' and 'klogin' please contact Eric at x3-TECH. ghudson: X11R6 was released today, people were ftping it everywhere. XFree386 3.0 apparently has been released too but it appears to be the same except for the headers. There're lots of new things in X11R6. tlyu's krb5 stuff is in there, but display postscript isn't. look it up on www.x.org if you really want to know more. nygren: Commodore declared they're going out of business last Friday. Also it appears that someone got an injunction against them for selling Amigas before they closed. the Underground Guide suggests that if you take 6.033 you "make some SIPB friends." warlord: RSA-129 has been cracked. The press conference was last week. The magic words are squeamish ossifrage. Other Other: rjbarbal: Read Tich Tolk grisha: Russian House rules. [there are a bunch of Russian House people up front] warlord: The IFC is rewriting Clearinghouse over the summer. Yow! yandros: At some point in 3.5 months someone's gonna ask you if you have some free time. Say _no._ The meeting was adjourned at 20:01:15. Minutes taken and submitted by shabby.
