I don't want to propose modified Dave's amendment. srz: Let's table it, talk about it later. Office Report: shabby: naming proposal? proven: outstanding issue of adding names and cnames is a problem? jweiss: useful cnames won't be a problem. frivolous ones will be more difficult. sorokin: how about dt/btc as cnames? jweiss: that's not nearly as frivolous as w20-557-couch. yandros: When we get our own subnet we'll have control over our own cnames. yandros makes a suggestion, that seems ok, but it's too late to change things. Too bad. We break into a bunch of different issues. Now we come back. Now we break up, now we come back, and now we're cha-cha'ing. seperate btc and dt: 16-0-2 passes seperate hodge and podge: 10-10, discussion, revote combine hodge and podge: 12-9 passes powermac gene-simmons: many-2-2+sgw passes DS3100 hodge-podge: 16-2-sgw passes xcluster lnitp: 13-6-3+sgw passes laptop1 dandelion-patch: 13-7-1+sgw passes rs6k pickled-herring: many-2-2+sgw passes 486 lola-granola: many-3-sgw passes maxine: opus: 5 yaz: 12 <-- bart: 1 limekiller: 1 abstain: sgw laptop: opus: 0 tess: 16 <-- putt: 0 portnoy: 2 limekiller: 2 jweiss: I'd like to get a cname sipb-mac for whichever mac we have exporting the mac stuff by ftp. Any problems? no. jweiss: There was an AIX security hole. I broke into oliver and commented out rlogin and rsh on it to patch the hole. djib: Does it also affect linux machines? eichin: I have one of the few linux machines that was actually affected by it. No release since things that called themselves 1.0 had the bug. It is only really really old Linux boxes that were affected. yandros: Should we get rid of telnet? Can we get rid of this and close up a potential security hole, stop people from telnetting in as root? tabled for next week. jweiss: new adapter on the back of the mac, and we're driving the NEC monitor with the onboard stuff. tlyu: User manual for tape drive? sorokin: mwhitson was going to deal. yoav: it may cost money, someone said. Is it worth it? mhpower: motion to allocate $700 for the manual. jweiss: amended to $100, seconded, and it's white-balloted. sorokin: I'll get on mwhitson's case about it. yandros: Monty's roses are *still* blooming... what the Hell? MIT Computing Report: jweiss: the net fell off EROS in rel-eng a couple times this week (the plug fell off). yandros: ez stopped working on the suns when this happened because imake sucks. jweiss: There've been problems with print quota servers. it's not getting updated. Computer Services: ghudson: news: I've been working out a lot of bugs in the new news software, and I was almost ready to leave it running but there was a file descriptor leak (?) and I had to back out today. jweiss: rosebud wasn't vulnerable to the hole. bert: discuss->www gateway source is going to be released in the next couple days. all that needs to be done is documentation. Add yourself to diswww (the mailing list) if you're interested. mkgray: We're moving the web server to NCSA httpd. it's faster. yandros: it's thanks to yoav. ghudson: new table and two new 1G drives in the machine room. mkgray: Move to rename anxiety-closet to opus. ghudson: *I* want those names. yoav: anxiety-closet is coded into binaries on there. discussion. yandros: since we're going to talk about changing server names later, let's do it all later. mkgray: I retract that motion. mhpower: Since we're supposed to be getting Sun machines to get for servers soon, would anyone think it'd be ok to create a SIPB SunOS server development discuss and mailing list? it's ok. yoav: Do we want to support sunos stuff for the SIPB locker? yandros: let's discuss it offline. ghudson: Now that we have lots of disk space on picayune, does anyone have any trouble exporting linux-athena by nfs from picayune? yandros: I'd suggest you get an abstraction name, like sipb-nfs. ghudson: sipb-nfs is fine. yandros: Web clients are probably going to be in a locker later this week in preparation for athena maybe possibly maintaining it. They're going to be used for olh, eventually. ghudson: We have unpaid bills from USA today and Clarinet. We're not sure how to pay USA Today and whether to pay for Clarinet. It needs to be done quickly, I want to go talk to people about seeing what we should do. no objections, so I'll figure out what needs to be done, and get the EC to approve it. SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report: Is it possible? warlord: The old tape sets will work fine. jweiss: I suspect you're wrong since we added a new disk on ronald-ann? yoav: is it 2G or 5G? warlord: In order to go to 5G, I need to start it as a blank. OFFLINE! this is why we need the user manual. It's [the backup] not going to happen currently, apparently. yandros: warranty on that? time 'til we need to return it if we want to return it because it's not useful? someone should deal. sorokin: Chad, send mail to mwhitson. Publications Report: nocturne: A few days ago someone in olc said something about one directory in techinfo or olh wasn't available. it was iLinux. ghudson: Techinfo should be fixed. yandros: I'll deal with it. R/O Report: mkgray: I hereby volunteer to be the R/O sucker. I may change my mind. Who wants to do what at R/O, like teaching classes and stuff? sorokin: We got this mail about our ASA status. Do we have it? did we file the right forms? ghudson: I filed the forms. sorokin: why don't you negotiate about the other stuff they want us to do? yandros: The mailing that goes out to Freshmen needs to be taken care of. mkgray will deal. rjbarbal: First question: what's the R/O sucker do? yandros: very little, organize the mailing. and the midway. srz: the tours are usually someone separate. rjbarbal: Can we get midway space through I/S instead of ASA? yandros: We may not get recognized by the ASA because of our constitution... but it's not clear what's going on. we'll see whether we care. svalente: last year we had a table, and we brought quiche, and we had hardware problems. We should have something more ready this year than it was last year. People should have something to say. Be more user-friendly. My freshman year, Rob's Amiga was there, and it was much cooler than last year's Midway. yandros: I talked to Mike Barrow about the How the Network Works cluedump thing he's doing, and Mike Barrow thinks the cluedumps should happen during R/O for the Freshmen. IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: harrisj: There're two sources of OK Soda around. Everyone, be OK. Other: This is the first official meeting of the summer. abbe: The 25th reunion party thing is 6/11, we sent out mail. Bother me to see the list of email names we sent invitations to so you can propose additions. We're apparently not doing paper mail. yoav: How about sending paper mail to people we think are going to show up? jcb: I'll help if we send to everyone. This is because it's bad politics to just invite a few people. sorokin: I've tried to dump this on people, because i *know* i don't have time. We should send mail to all 200 of them, but someone needs to volunteer to make the effort to do this. jcb: I'll try to get this done with the Alumni office this week. sorokin: who wants to write up the invitation? yoav: We should allocate money to send the mail? jcb: 29 cents for 3 days (first class) is usual... anything faster is a lot more expensive. I'll bring in envelopes. sorokin: I move to allocate $75 for stamps and xeroxing and that we do the mailing. yandros: make it $100. seconded, white-balloted. Other Other: Treasurer's IRS check came in the mail. jcb: I made some Stout, it came out at 9.2% alcohol. harrisj: nocturne can tie a cherry stem into a knot in his mouth. abbe: Kids at Pu Pu Hot Pot sgw: OK Cola has weird stuff in it (reads label) and I wouldn't drink it if I were you... harrisj: It's OK! rjbarbal: I need a job!!!!!!!!! warlord: My parents are looking into starting a microbrewery in Ohio. 6+1=7.
