In attendance were Voting members: sorokin yandros rcaileff ghudson yoav mwhitson | sekullbe warlord tlyu nocturne beaners harrisj Associate members: rei mjbauer mhpower eichin jcb jweiss marc | dkk Non-voting members: Prospectives: tiuzzol sgw yonah djib jemorris krill Guests: jsod Treasurer's Report: ghudson: All billing issues have been dealt with. 486--Kathy will carry money forward. Clarinet--paid. MIT is dealing with legal issues. Can we get a refund because we're losing the Clarinet features Dave Barry & Mike Royko? Probably not. Chairman's Report: '() Office Report: jweiss cleaned the office. If you look hard, you can still tell. pickled-herring showed up. Machines got moved around a bit. Name tags got updated for new/newly-renamed machines. xterminal sucks--it can't deal with long hostnames. Solution-- remove names, refer to hosts by IP address, and don't let it resolve the names. Dell sucks--we still don't have the 486--don't know when it will be in. yandros: sunos vs. solaris on deathtongue (which is a 7.7 test machine)? Recommend that SIPB be lame and wait a week before dealing. Can we install sunos & solaris on the same machine? Not enough disk space. (discussion) Discussion of whether SIPB should switch which machine is the 7.7 test machine. Decision tabled until next week. Tape drive: manual hasn't been ordered. mwhitson will deal. warlord will eventually get backups working correctly--he hasn't had time yet. (Discussion of how well it works with what we know now. offline) We need a place to put the 486 when it arrives. We need to think about this. simsong has threatened to hang something from the office ceiling again. couch (the piece of furniture, not w20-557-couch.mit.edu) nocturne volunteered to get it cleaned but wants someone who's around during the day to deal instead. There's a bunch of junk piled in the corner near the fridge. This stuff should all go away. Clothing should go somewhere useful. (yandros will deal). There's lots of old food in the office. This should be gotten rid of. discussion of whether S.N.O.T. counts as food. Overwhelmingly not! MIT Computing Report: Translator sucks. If you're in too many groups, aklog hangs. People in cult-movies got put in 4 extra groups--this is because moira sucks or because users suck. (Actually it's because blanche sucks. Whether or not users suck probably isn't related.) acheron has been testing a new file server binary. This may be related to the fact that acheron has been having problems, or it may just be a hardware error. ixion also died and came back today. Volumes won't be moved off ixion. Not sure about acheron. X.dialup wasn't accepting connections for 3.5 hours before anyone mentioned it. Everyone must have been using dragons-lair release 7.7 is available for friendly test on dec's and RS6000's. Will be available for suns really soon. Problems reported on 7.7 with tokens getting removed on RS6k's. SIPB updates must be done manually. Motion to have Sesame-Street-like motd's for updated machines. ("This release has been brought to you by the number 7...") dkk can be called (or beeped) in case of operations-related problems 3-2624 (voice mail) for hardware problems will get the right person paged. instructions for dec update to 7.7 have the wrong pathname. The locker should beta-dmusys instead of beta-sys. As of 7/1/94 public & staff DS3100's will be serviced by the hotline group out of scavenged parts. We need to figure out what we want to do with our DS3100'S. (charon & hodge-poge). Charon will go away. We should ask if Jerry's group will deal with charon until the new machine comes in. Someone should look into a service contract for hodge-podge. I/S said it should be OK for us to pay out of our budget for one or two such service contracts. Computer Services: ghudson: moved news & news-transport to 18.181. Four servers moved. Three still have to be moved. Nametags haven't been updated. warlord: bloom beacon--uucp is failing until CPT's get switched over. he sent mail to bug-cpt. innd sucks Still have to move charon's AFS servers on Sunday. (ghudson won't be around). This will be difficult because of mitvma. mhpower says we just have to do a virtual reboot of the virtual machine. He'll look into it. Moving sipb-bitnet gateway might as well wait until we have the new machine because the mitvma virtual reboot is a pain. We're gonna be lame again. SIPB Backup Report: warlord: AFS cell hasn't been backed up in a while. He's planning to reorganize how this is set up and deal. mwhitson is doing backups now. (applause) Doing charon now. Publications Report: we have publications. Chad still hasn't gotten iBitmap. We threw away 1991 version of "Dialing into Athena". We now have the current one. Motion to get 30 copies of iLinux-Athena. Discussion of whether it needs rewriting (or at least a few corrections) before we do this. White ballot. tiuzzol will deal. She will get iBitmap too. iSIPB--we could use one. Someone should write it. djib volunteers to work on it. (Thanks.) R/O Report: The sucker isn't here. IAP Report: NOT. CokeComm Report: We have Coke. People should read iRefrigerator Restocking for Morons. flame flame flame. Non-refundable cans & bottles are piling up. A Bexley trip should happen RSN. (If you read this message from the office and this hasn't been done, please help us do it.) We need more bags to put these in. There should be one of the (bi-weekly) reclycling pickup this week, so we should deal soon. Stuff just needs to be piled in the alley behind Bexley. You don't need to live there to deal. One of the reasons this is cool is you might get to see Ross dressed as a woman. People said not to worry too much about sorting it--are they going to give it back to us? (reference to "Alice's Restaurant") People should drink coke. People should eat S.N.O.T. Can we get some blue bins for recyclables? rcaileff might deal. Other: The ex pit-manager (jik) is married. warlord: PGP 2.6 is released. Add pgp. Use it. Keep your mail secure. Kerberos 5 beta-4 made it out this week. mhpower: we have a summer theme song--"Psychopathic Killer in the Summertime" by Corky and the Juice Pigs sorokin says everyone but sgw should feel free to impose their music on the SIPB It's not moira's fault that users are doing things wrong. sgw says hi. He also says the CD's are stacked in disorganized piles. They should be alphabetized. web is engaged (to Chris Coffey), for those who don't know. Wedding is 8/22/94. There was a moment of silence to contemplate the idea of little Chee's. We can use morph to see what their children might look like. Original mail bounces are fun. People should not poke each other in the eyes with the epee that's in the office. We reached the 1 yr. anniversary of the web server announcement. People keep asking sgw to provide names of people looking for jobs. If you need a job, ask sgw if he knows about anything. Does anyone want to buy a 1.7G disk. SCSI Micropolis 2217's. $985 without any volume discount. Talk to sgw. rjbarbal fixed a Sun keyboard that got coffee spilled into it. Talk to him about it if you need info. Can he de-S.N.O.T. a keyboard? Other Other: This weekend: Field Day if you're a HAM or want to be. Also Moody Blues concert. Rickoids get here Sunday. Interphasers will be here this week. harrisj is offering free green or red S.N.O.T. (If you want the blue schnozz-berry, S.N.O.T., you can scrape it off a keyboard.) dkk had a positive experience at the Med Center for the first time in 13 years. (Did they kill one of his enemies?) Motion to table Chad. Seconded. Post Meeting Ultimate Report: This is a meeting. Ultimate afterward. Probably on the turf. The meeting was adjourned at Mon Jun 20 20:15:47 1994. Minutes taken and submitted by jcb.
