Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 06/27/94 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by sorokin. In attendance were Voting members: sorokin mkgray abbe rcaileff sekullbe nocturne beaners warlord ghudson cat tlyu yandros xiphmont shabby | harrisj gamadrid rjbarbal Associate members: jtkohl opus marc mhpower jcb mcmullan eichin | jweiss mjbauer rei Non-voting members: Prospectives: fenn djib ocshwar bobmacke sgw krill sipb5 dimon grisha akatlas tiuzzol jmmikkel shadow Guests: lessa hmsallum Secretary's gratuitous pre-meeting comment: I'm a moron! Treasurer's Report: abbe: ghudson probably has something to say ghudson: It's just about FY95 now, and we'll be dealing with lorraine instead of kathy. Don't get reqs signed by kathy, but by lorraine. It'll be more inconvenient, she's in E40. abbe: I'll actually figure out what's officially happening by talking to lorraine and tell everyone next week. abbe: I'll be sending mail to the MITVMA people getting rid of crufty VMA accounts soon. this will save us money. ghudson: We should start thinking about large purchases earlier instead of later now that we have a new year. this is for planning how to deal with our budget. sgw: buy lorraine scotch. "Lagavuian" scotch. mhpower: Can we schedule a new years' eve party? warlord: why's this being mentioned here? someone: because he's being doctoral. abbe: the reimbursements - "it wasn't in anytime near a while ago, so it's going in next year" approx. quote yandros: stuff that I talked about before will be bought on '95s budget. yandros: It was the treasurer's birthday last week. Chairman's Report: Introductions! "[Derek] was Jessie before Matthew was" That was lots of fun. sorokin threatens the secretary with bodily harm. yandros: changing the by-laws? maybe the chairman can deal? sekullbe: I think rjbarbal said he was going to deal. sorokin: it's my turn to not do anything now, he's been doing it for long enough... [back from Other] rjbarbal: straw poll, who wants to have a meeting? he will send mail gamadrid: the Chairman's wearing a pretty hot little [drowned out by laughter] [miniskirt] Office Report: jweiss: marc is a bonehead. marc: Oh, that's right, I am. jweiss: marc borrowed cutter's keyboard, it's not back. marc: [I'll bring it back] sorokin: clean up the coke cans. I cleaned it up and then it was canny again the next morning. ghudson: marc is a bonehead. someone should bring in a CD-ROM drive and SunOS install disk for dt. rcaileff: I checked on recycling bins. Anyone know who in the student center is in charge of recycling? yandros: the CAC. go in the office some time during the day. yandros: I came in the office yesterday morning, and all the coke cans were on the floor. we fixed it. The bottles are gone now. The old clothes are still here, and I'm dealing tonight. whee. rcaileff: the cord taped to the floor has come untaped. If someone gives me the duct tape it'll become retaped. It's happening now. yandros: Lots of boxes in the back of the office. Please get them out. sorokin: there are rjbarbal's textbooks in the office now because he didn't put them away. this is in my capacity as office czar. yandros: ANSI K&R, A book on C, and the book on Curses were all mine and are missing. ANSI K&R has been found now. opus: An MIT Alum wants to give us 2 DS5k's with 4G of disk total. He may want to give it to us. If he has to give it back, we would have to give it back. He wants a SIPB guest account in return for this stuff. Do we do this? sorokin: this seems to be a policy question. I'll send mail about this one. mhpower: Would we be responsible if it broke? How 'bout service contracts? sorokin: it still seems to be a policy question. harrisj: couch-nagging time. Who's responsible for the couch? sorokin: you. harrisj: oh, me? ghudson: the 486 still isn't here. Dell still hasn't shipped it, they're the ones screwing up. Dell sucks. tiuzzol: how much is allotted to cleaning the couch? sorokin: would you like to look into this and come back with an estimate? tiuzzol: "one of us" will look into it. gamadrid: there are balloons mentioned in the middle of the office. harrisj: I move that we look into a strait jacket and a gag for george. yandros: athena 7.7B is coming out. it's on yaz. according to our policy, dt is supposed to run both 7.7 and sunos at the same time, and that's not possible. I suggest we put 7.7B on btc. jweiss: We won't have a 7.6 sun in the office if we do that. We should probably wait a letter or two before updating btc to 7.7. I'll have dt put into 7.6, make bill a 7.7 test machine. yandros: which rs/6k do we want to be the test machine? I think pickled-herring should be 7.7, not oliver. no one objects, they'll be switched. yandros: on gene, there's a folder named "Temp". Do not change the name of this folder. The system needs it named that. MIT Computing Report: ghudson: the zephyr servers are an amazing testament to how fast modern computers are. jweiss: 7.7 is kinda broken, not really broken. Both machines on my desk are running it, and between the two of them I can get everything that needs to be done done. yandros: something about an AFS server to allow stock transarc clients to write to them. they went down under testing, and some problems were appearing. ghudson and yandros blather, and warlord interjects. marc: lots of new accounts this week, RSI is here and interphase is here. mkgray: lots of people are forgetting their USERNAMES. the only mechanism that kind of works sometimes, is to expn their full name at mit. jweiss: find someone with moira read-only access, there's a query they can make given the user's id or full name. people in accounts, and mhbraun and I can do that. [jweiss via email: As it turns out readonly access doesn't allow you to make the query based on ID, this is a known bug in the config of the moira server that needs to be fixed.] Computer Services: ghudson: I was in Pittsburgh this week and I was in a bookstore, and all the books except one had it right as "rtfm" instead of "pit-manager". On a related note, I changed the text of the thingie that says don't use pit-manager as the name. mhpower: problem with incoming news. dilbert arrived late and out of order. this is bad for a couple reasons. people saw it but didn't send mail to usenet. they should have. The problem was with us relying on washington university, apparently. the media lab says that timely arrival of these feeds is essential to their research. mkgray: a few people have been losing because the news server moved to 18.181. They should be using the name news.mit.edu. The error is something to the effect of "cannot contact server" or "cannot get groups info". sgw: I may be able to get a second clarinet feed for sipb. he'll talk to usenet. warlord: uucp is on beacon, and we haven't been able to get to it from the cpt's and it needs to get moved over. marc: talk to mhbraun. warlord: he has the bits but doesn't know how to use them. marc: oh, *I* know how to use them. offline. yandros: on a related note, we have a modem in that room connected to the analog phone line. do we want to get rid of it once it's not needed? marc: why bother? it's a good backup. yandros: I had something I wanted to do with it. marc: what for? yandros: something I don't want to bring up here and now. tabled. yandros: final draft of the services list are over there, and over there, [points]. someone corrected marthag to something else, but it does have her name right in the first place. if whoever did it sees this, tell him what they were trying to do, he doesn't get it. ghudson: moving over AFS servers to the other net? I'll deal, we can't until probe is back. ghudson: gnu locker? potentially we could get the filsys pointer, it's not clear whether there's any support for it. yandros: DCNS passed the buck to other people in DCNS. marc: Chad, can you be more vague? yandros: sure, after the meeting. bottom line: we're waiting on other people for this. SIPB Backup Report: warlord: I've been lame, and haven't dealt with stuff on hodge-podge, and I'll deal appropriately real soon now. yandros: mike did server backups, but AFS backups have gone without for 6 weeks. yandros will grab marc after the meeting and deal. Publications Report: harrisj got stuff. oh, wait, no, tiuzzol got it, but harrisj carried it. AWW... isn't that cute? dimon: grisha and I finished Inessential Cyrillic, bleed on it. harrisj: anyone want to help with Inessential X Resources? shabby raises hand. everybody: if you're interested, send mail to harrisj!! mkgray: on Iness. Cyrillic: someone was interested in Iness. Foreign languages of some sort, but I can't remember who. If someone who was doing that reads the minutes, contact dimon and grisha. rei: office manual will hopefully be usable by R/O. bobmacke: I can help with that and those other publications projects. yandros: including clue dumps. which, by the way, will be starting again soon. if you want a cluedump on a particular topic, send mail to yandros. sgw: related to the cluedumps, I'm starting to maintain some chunk of 'clues' in /afs/sipb/contrib/doc, and if you have any nifty howto, tutorial, or brief overviews, let me know. mkgray: on a vaguely related note. I've written most of a minutes-to-html formatter. anyone who wants to learn perl and help me finish this up... (hands raise). he's working on it on tuesday night, for all who want to attend. tiuzzol: will this also include the votes on people for membership and stuff? There is a difference between having it world-readable in /afs/sipb/admin/minutes and having it as public as being available via the web. sorokin: offline. she'll send mail. yandros: on a related note, a service that is no longer running, jik used to run a wais server on rtfm when it was pit-manager, and he used to serve the sipb minutes. mhpower: but he's married now. yandros: I don't think we ran this service when we ported it over to rtfm. Do we want to make it available again via wais? sorokin: this was supposed to go offline back in the last paragraph. rjbarbal: You're still in publications? I'll be back. yandros: The I/S group called "Rethinking I/S publications" is considering calling off the Cluster document racks. They're considering the SIPB office as an alternate site. R/O Report: mkgray: I'm still the R/O sucker. We'll have Net at the activities midway. You should do stuff soon if you want to do something for R/O. send me mail. abbe: Mary's is opening 2nd week of august. We should take a group of freshmen there for the freshmen dinners. yandros: strike that from the minutes, it'll look like we're actually doing planning. IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: we're running out of coke. we're out of diet coke. we have a jerk. gamadrid: Yeah, we're running out of almost everything. harrisj: still have plenty of snot in my drawer. warlord: [something too dumb to go in the minutes] Other: shadow: I have a friend and two computers stuck on mass ave and we need to get to pika and I'd like to ask for help from someone with a car... jcb will deal. ghudson: nobody mentioned it at the last meeting. some guy in australia wants a sipb guest account, and wants to see how SIPB works. sorokin will deal. remind me and I'll deal. yandros: mosquito's back in town, currently in Maine, and he'll be back next week, here for 7/4. mkgray: Matthew and Jake of M&J's adventures have gotten praising comments from Disney; expect animated film in '96. abbe: I'm going to try to convince M&J to do "M&J go on a shooting spree" to kill all the people who declared undying love based on seeing my picture in my web page. rjbarbal: dinosaurs for free on the 5th floor of bldg. 36. [they're bobcats.] marc: before the next SIPB meeting is the 4th of July, and that means Fulton's Folly is happening. be there at 6am or later. mail was sent to summer-fun, and is being forwarded to sipb-soc as we speak. sorokin: Fenway has been asked to bring its collection of strategic games. I don't know where they are. yandros tells her where they are, and... umm... Fenway is going somewhere else on the esplanade, and the mail wasn't sent to fenway. yandros: but alex aminoff & jenise bushman aminoff will bring them... ahh. gamadrid: everyone wear sunglasses and drink water. yandros & nocturne: "(condom)" ghudson: '() rcaileff: hopefully epee will be on the net tonight. nocturne: I'm writing a replacement for zwrite that may go into outland or somewhere. Give me suggestions for features. ghudson: all glacier services have been down for a few days. xiphmont: the "squish" audio compression thingy is being worked on. 10:1 compression! yandros: new software on quiche. have shabby or me or someone else show you. tlyu: Quiche temporarily has an extra gig until I get my SCSI up. [Mary Chung's Report:] marc: the current reports are that she's signed a lease, it takes affect on 8/1. and hopefully she's opening in the second week of August. Other Other: jtkohl: moody blues concert, it was cool. tiuzzol: george is NOT a very good window. cat: I saw two new flavors of "bubble-gum" and "cola" snot. "EWWW" mhpower: blathers about the right to say that things "suck." it will be illegal to say that vegetables grown in colorado suck as of 7/1. sgw: vegetarian groups are actually boycotting vegetables from colorado. secretary misses a lot of conversation here. someone should tell Bread and Circus who would be more than happy to boycott something new. sgw: I can't tell them because I'm boycotting them. Post-Meeting Ultimate Report: There will be Ultimate after the meeting, probably starting at 9. walk that way until you see sipb members playing frisbee... The meeting was adjourned at 20:39:58. Minutes taken and submitted by shabby.
