No mention of OJ on the cover of the Globe. Treasurer's Report: She met with lorraine. If you need a req for something costing under $200, you can talk to the officers and they can sign the req. Otherwise, you need to talk to lorraine in E40-321. We actually have a budget now that we're keeping track of. rjbarbal: What's our total annual budget? abbe: I could pull it out of my b-- ackpack... Our working budget is $39000+$11000(network fees). We pay for everything out of that $39k. IS will provide us with one client of each type. abbe: also in that budget is service contracts. lorraine needs a list of machines. mhbraun will deal or stop being the contact point for this info. We trust him. The MITVMA accounts out of use have been nuked. Chairman's Report: ')( Office Report: We have a 486. It's pretty toast currently. dkk: what's going on with lola? yandros: its partition table is trashed. software problems. yandros: One of the mac monitors migrated to banana and it has a keyboard. don't knock over the monitor, it's on loan. jweiss: support/service for our vaxen and dec 3100's? it's not clear, but someone will check. sorokin: what's the procedure for decommissioning a piece of hardware? like, to give it to someone else? jweiss: I suggest contacting the property office... ldgabbay: You have to take it to the property office, and make sure it's ok, we've been doing this where I've been working. sorokin: the old mac monitor is going to jhbrown. ghudson: we should start thinking about when to replace the vaxstations, err, get something to supercede them. jtkohl: what about the other stuff back there? printer? sorokin: the printer is unclaimed. it's not MIT property. whoever gets it out of the office first wins. yandros: there's a box in the back that seems to have come from lola, we should do something about it. anything in it? we don't know, we'll check and take it out and deal with the box. jweiss: There is some finite chance that I may, you know, get unlame this week and clean up the office a little bit. sgw: something dumb. sorokin: shut up, steve. rjbarbal: phones don't belong on the floor. svalente: I haven't gotten a keyboard, I got some prices today, they look okay. A good keyboard was about $55. svalente: members, like phones, don't belong on the floor. sorokin: I disagree unless you want to put them on the table. ghudson: As long as sal is going to PCs for everyone for a keyboard, can we get a 3-button mouse for lola? shabby: trackball? shabby shall price a trackball for next week. ghudson: We have a whole bunch of QIC tapes for quiche's drive. I think they can read up to 100M. yandros: either 90 or 150. sorokin: we have no floppies, we should have some floppies. someone: I move we allocate $30 for as many disks as that'll buy for office use. seconded. white-ballot? jweiss: friendly amendment for HD disks? no objection, it passes, mwhitson will deal. MIT Computing Report: MIT has computers. mwhitson: w20 and w91 have both been hit in the past few days... ghudson: m11, too. sorokin: any ideas why? jweiss: there was a power hit. ghudson: no athena people were on campus. SIPB people were, though, and our services came back nice and fast. dkk: I was, but I wasn't in my office. yandros: 7.7 staff test should start by the end of the week. it doesn't work very well. jweiss: it doesn't work too poorly either. yandros: all the cluster machines were stolen? sorokin: they're actually just replacing the carpet. the cluster's still open. dkk: we have another dictionary available online, the OED, we have "some license" for it, and it's in AFS, and it's apparently going to be run per workstation right out of AFS instead of via a server, and it's the OED, a cool dictionary. yandros: people at DCNS would like it if we kept webster running. ghudson: MIT has 300 licenses for Purify, Quantify and Pure Link for Solaris. should be available in the not too distant future. (it's debugging software) dkk: i'm working on a proposal for the next generation of dialup, in the pipeline for this fall. Any suggestions, tell those of us that deal with dialups about it. sethg: I don't have a 9600 baud modem! ghudson: For... I forgot. nevermind. ghudson: I've asked for, and will probably have created soon some new gnu volumes. Computer Services: ghudson: We have three new sparc 20's in the machine room, and two are installed in a state they can be kept in. the third needs to be reinstalled currently. ghudson: we're out of ports on the 18.181 Delni, so we can't move any more machines over to that net until we get a new delni or some other way to go about it. dkk: there's a certain lack of respect for the reliability of SIPB services because of the fact we use a Delni. yandros: aren't they all going on UTP at some time? mhpower: I thought UTP was only for the office, not the machine room? tlyu: Delni's aren't 802.3-compliant, apparently. I'll investigate what's going on. mhpower: We got some of the clarinet news articles late. If we pay about $25 a month more we can get articles 8 hours sooner. yandros moves we do this. ghudson: This will require me to talk to Connie Mitchell about stuff. abbe: Is it going from 24 hours after it happens to 16 hours or is it more like 10 to 2? mhpower: about 16 to 8... dkk: I've gotten some complaints about it too. [it == the delay] mhpower: shouldn't be more than $125, since the billing cycle ends in October. dcctdw: do we have this money? oh, man, do we ever. the motion: allocate up to $300 for this deal. vote: many&mike's hand in the ceiling to 0 to 2+sgw(late) mhpower: I'm working on a program for rtfm to kill off processes as root, based on some logical, recent criteria. processes that ought to be killed, really. mwhitson: is this going to help us with connections getting stuck in CLOSE_WAIT? mhpower: if there are still processes, yes. offline stuff. SIPB Backup Report: yandros: warlord did a backup, which is kinda cool. It takes two tapes to do, and it goes about five minutes into the second tape. Publications Report: ')( R/O Report: R/O sucker isn't here. Everyone give him a hard time about this, since R/O is real soon now. Any plans for Activity Midway? IAP Report: ')( CokeComm Report: srz: The jerk is buying soda as we speak. (and there was much rejoicing) gamadrid: We have coke again and people should give me money. Other: rjbarbal: I've essentially not read mail in about three weeks, which is why I haven't asked opinions about the by-laws conspiracy. I'll send out mail and read mail before the next meeting. Umm... yeah. shabby: I can kinit, klist, and kdestroy under OS/2. svalente: kerberos for Unix also works. srz: SIPB got mentioned in Ask "Joe". rjbarbal: If anyone has experience in building MacDiscuss without Kerberos, talk to me. Other Other: yandros: New Hampshire survived an invasion by five bare-chested SIPB members; no casualties were reported. abbe: anyone have a handy phrasebook in German, Portuguese, Korean, or Japanese? I could really use it. abbe: A bunch more people should go to New Hampshire should go some time. sethg: they should at least wear neckties. jweiss: too many bugs, not enough water on the Ipswich river. bobmacke: last monday the fireworks were really spiffy. (much rejoicing as gamadrid brings Coca Cola into the office) jcb: Can we put George in the minutes as gamadrid-bearing-coke? abbe: I spend $325 on stamps today. yandros: it was yoav's birthday Saturday. dkk: it was also yoav's birthday a year before that. beaners: those three balloons have survived for months now. yandros pulls a sword. mhpower: I think that once for each postage stamp abbe should forge the signature of the president of fenway house. rjbarbal: HowToGAMIT is being published. Send corrections to htg, I guess. jcb: is the stuff online readable? no, it won't be online. advertising prohibits it. djib: it may go online later. if nothing else, they can put the corrections online. we have a bunch of old htg's in the black cabinet. dcctdw: professional ballroom dance lessons are really cool. shabby: I bought a Magic starter deck today. sgw: He was such a nice boy... Post-Meeting Ultimate Report: yandros: post-meeting ultimate didn't happen last week because it was raining when it was outside, so we went swimming instead. So we'll have ultimate after today's meeting and play for twice as long. The meeting was adjourned at 20:11:05. Minutes taken and submitted by shabby.
