Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/18/94 The meeting was called to order at Mon Jul 18 19:30:02 EDT 1994 by sorokin. In attendance were Voting members: yandros sorokin mhbraun mkgray autumn cat nocturne tlyu mhbraun | yoav svalente rjbarbal shabby warlord beaners gamadrid dcctdw Associate members: jtkohl jcb mcmullan jweiss eichin mhpower | mjbauer rei marc Non-voting members: Prospectives: warrend djib carib | grisha dimon sgw jmmikkel dimdim quijote aragorn Guests: Treasurer's Report: The treasurer is on a plane. Conjecture about what type of plane and whether she can requisition it. Hardware service contracts: mhbraun says he has implicit permission to decide what goes under maintenance. He doesn't plan to include the RZ55's because it's way too expensive to be cost effective. He'll submit a proposal. O'Reilly & USENIX put out a set of 5 books which are complete 4.4 BSD documentation. About $150 for the set, about $120 for a USENIX member. Motion to allocate up to $200 to buy a set. We probably need to give Quantum some money for our credit/debit account. white-ballotted. yoav will deal. Chairman's Report: Dave Kushner sent carla mail a while ago asking to have his athena account reinstated. He's a SIPB member. He has a charon account now. He wants athena for a "permanent email address." carla won't change a person's kerberos password from a phone request alone. His kerberos principal doesn't exist. Much flamage. sorokin will send him mail saying he has to deal with carla himself. Current policy is that prospectives can't be on SIPB minutes. Previous objections were because election results were included, but currently the actual voting isn't included. (No, this isn't true. Not according to mhpower's mail archives, anyway.) Motion--(1) not send voting results to sipb-minutes but keep them in the minutes archives, and (2) add individual prospectives to sipb-minutes upon request, with the constraint that voting in elections not be included in the minutes. Much flamage. Motion restated at least three times due to more flamage. 15-6-sgw. Passes. Motion to include voting results in the email. (negate (1) above) 12-5-6-sgw. Passes. Motion to annul the entire meeting. Much flamage. Retracted. Motion to move numerical results of elections to a separate list including only SIPB members. 4-11-6 (but not sgw). Fails. Office Report: cat took cans down. jweiss cleaned the office. Magazines should go away or they'll be thrown out. A Stud. Ctr. person says we need the filters changed in our HVAC units. We asked them for 3 days notice, which he agreed to give us. jweiss and yandros are discussing rearranging the office to make space for new machines. Talk to them (after the meeting) to give input. The Commodore 64's and television should either be hooked up or taken away. There is no intention of hooking them up. MIT Computing Report: Lots of new people around who are forgetting their usernames. Stock transarc clients can now write to the athena cell. The net cell wedged in an annoying way. mhbraun says this is becuase they aren't using an RT as a server. Computer Services: Web server was updated (to ncsa httpd, mostly by nocturne). It's faster, but there are lots of little bugs. send mail to webmaster if you find one. anxiety-closet has been registering a hard drive error. We ran rzdisk on it and got one recoverable error. It should be OK now but people should keep an eye on it. We now have NetBSD 1.0alpha running on lola-granola. NetBSD and linux are taking about 150M each on the hard disk. There's a NetBSD mailing list called netbsd-dev (archived in a discuss meeting) for interested people. Mail bounces got sent to RTFM-maintainers by the program that scans on bloom-beacon for use of the name "pit-manager" informing them of the change. (There's a program on beacon that sends mail to people who use the name pit-manager. It tells them that the name is now rtfm. Currently when that mail bounces it goes to rtfm-maintainers; this is sub-optimal.) There was some discussion of this on -c sipb. The mailing list pit-manager-scanner-bounces has been created to deal with this. Ask someone on sipb-acl if you want to be added. CPT's--we don't have any good excuse to be using them and hoffman doesn't really want us using them anyway. (Someone asked that bloom-beacon and senator-bedfellow be added to the CPT list for personal UUCP access.) People should use the analog line--perhaps we need a faster modem on it? We feed 4 people--warlord, jtkohl, wesommer and tytso. In short, we need to address hoffman's email message and come up with a response. srz and tytso would be good people to ask about historical info on why we have CPT access in the first place, since they were probably the ones who dealt with it at the time. warlord will deal. It's not clear what's going to happen. Motion to allocate up to $200 for a 14.4k modem. Dies. mhpower's program to kill off random processes as root is coming along. It found 19,659 processes to kill. tlyu intends to talk to people about moving 18.181 to a UTP repeater. Should the office have a PC/MCIA driver for users with laptops? Prices are about $100-150 for such a drive that we could drop into lola-granola. Much flamage. Motion to allocate up to $175 to purchase a PC/MCIA drive for lola-granola. 7-0-11-sgw. Motion passes, we think. Much more flamage. Motion to allow the previous motion to pass regardless of what the by-laws say. White-ballot. Passes. Athena needs OLC volunteers--if you consider yourself clueful enough you're welcome to become one--talk to sorokin. Examples of categories that SIPB could provide significant expertise in include linux and private workstations. We should have an olcr clue dump soon. Clue dumps will probably start soon. First one is "how the network works" by mlbarrow in bldg. 1. Probably not on Mondays, but if people feel that right after meetings is good, this is a possibility. Send yandros mail with scheduling constraints. At least four clue dumps are lined up. Maybe we'll teach them during R/O. SIPB Backup Report: We've had two AFS backups in the last month. Current tapes have been in the vault for a long time--we should put a more recent one in. jweiss will deal. mhpower can explain everything necessary to do this. We have three sets of relatively current backup tapes. Motion to allocate $150 for more digital grade exabyte tapes. White-ballot. Passes. warlord will buy deal. Publications Report: Rumors of two new publications. Inessential Cyrillic is one. Motion to allocate enough money for 20 copies. White-ballot. Passes. dimon will deal. We need orange emacs quick-reference cards. sorokin has ordered them from sendpubs. They'll be here in a bit. We should have lots of Athena documentation around for new users. Send mail to sendpubs. R/O Report: The R/O sucker is here. We asked for 3 UTP net drops for the midway. mhbraun will arrange for this. Remind beaners to deal with tours. IAP Report: It's in 5 months. CokeComm Report: We have Coke, but we're running low. Pay yer debts! Other: Linux AFS is going into beta RSN, like end of this week or early next week. Unclear which linux version is necessary. warlord successfully wrote a linux file using AFS. vos, fs and pts are also working -- warlord ran vos create on project.security without testing and it worked. Test first next time, though. Other Other: yandros's machine in E40 has a CD-ROM drive and it's cool. svalente: after a year, it's possible to get really bad (McDonalds) food in Central Square. Not to comment on anyone's clothing, but this meeting has been brought to us by the letter "W." Switzerland is as strange as a month ago. eichin brought back chocolate. He'll bring some in. yay! rjbarbal: working 60 hrs a week would really suck if it weren't for overtime pay. Today is harrison's birthday. Post-Meeting Ultimate Report: Will happen. Look for out-of-shape SIPB members on the field. The meeting was adjourned at Mon Jul 18 20:54:26 EDT 1994. Minutes taken and submitted by jcb.
