Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 08/29/94 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by sorokin. In attendance were Voting members: beaners rjbarbal ghudson shabby rcaileff dcctdw sorokin yandros cat | mhbraun xiphmont Associate members: wesommer eichin mhpower gsstark jtkohl marc jweiss srz svalente Non-voting members: Prospectives: jered sdeo barker jefreypu djib cordelia yonah aragorn niftyno fubob tritan jhawk smit hartmans rfrankel ldgabbay | midum emhavens katzchen mjacknis velly Guests: Secretary's Gratuitous Pre-meeting Comment: I'm losing at Risk! Treasurer's Report: Treasurer's not here. She's doing sorority rush. Chairman's Report: Introductions occur. It's rush. She hasn't been on campus since last Tuesday. Her hair has been cut. ghudson: We have a lot of prospectives. Office Report: ghudson: We have a new tk50 drive, courtesy jweiss. he was going to put it in Computer Services instead of Office Report, but here it is anyway. ghudson: We also have a few extra thinwire drops. yandros: We're going to UTP "sometime". jtkohl: Do we have a UTP-to-thinwire connector we'll be able to use for laptop connections? mhbraun: we can do anything. yandros: lola-granola last week came up with a memory error last week, but it got better. It's really weird. jtkohl: Any reason to continue running Linux on lola-granola? ghudson: No, except maybe lilo. mhpower: Book stuff go here? yes. This morning someone said they were from IS with two complete copies of the Frame 4 docset. They're over on the shelves, to the right of the atlas. We still need the old stuff. shabby: sort refundable cans from nonrefundables. mhpower: Do we need iness. can recycling for morons? probably. MIT Computing Report: ghudson: Zephyr broke Saturday, but it wasn't my fault. It also wasn't mhbraun's fault. It was the fault of zwgc, marc, and all the root name servers. During the process of tracking down the zwgc problem they backed down the zephyr server to the non-greg version, and I'm interested in finding out if any of the problems people were complaining about in my servers are still happening in the old servers. sorokin: Lots of freshmen got accounts. (someone): Anyone can run froshpref. yandros: I'd like to suggest people not do that. it doesn't matter though, the lottery is over. Computer Services: jweiss: New TK50 tape drive. I guess it probably works right now but haven't tested it. Someone should pick a machine to hook it up to, preferably a DEC Product. ghudson: It was also mentioned that someone should check to make sure lola's 5.25" drive works properly. ghudson: News maintainers have set up a test server on a ss-20, and it'll break your .newsrc. read from sipb-server-2. mhpower found that the amt news server was taking clarinet articles from us and making them available to the world. They were dealt with in the appropriate manner. we got a complaint about rgardner sending blanket mail to aol users. Greg has not sent him nasty mail yet, but will. SIPB Backup Report: yandros: suggestion to move hodge-pogde to the machine room. lots of people: huh ? yandros: This would eliminate conflicts between us and users using the tape drive... offline. it's not really clear what the problem is or how this would solve it; tabled, mostly, unless someone says something more coherent. mhpower: it's 1/3 of the way done... Publications Report: ghudson: We're out of iness. latex, we're down to 6 "welcome to athena"s. sorokin: anyone want to deal? cat: Wasn't there a problem with iLaTeX that needed to be fixed before we print? people: uhhhhh... sorokin: what are we going to do about it? Chad? yandros: I'm busy tonight, and, umm... can someone deal with fixing iLaTeX? sorokin: volunteers for sending to sendpubs for the "welcome to athena"s and then deal with iLaTeX once there's a good version available? jweiss: I'd send mail, but I'm not logged in. sorokin: bean, Send mail to sendpubs and ask for some more "Welcome to Athena"s. ghudson will fix iLatex, and jhawk will get copies. eichin: mkgray said people need to deal with midway stuff tonight. sorokin: ok, so someone needs to deal with posters for classes, too. umm... jweiss: up to $25 to make copies of alleged posters. seconded, white-balloted. cordelia will help poster. shabby: i'll look for the poster from last year. R/O Report: yandros: if anyone has relevant posters, how 'bout mailing them to matthew, and we should all ask him to deal, as he said he would. jweiss: All show up tomorrow at 5:30 for midway. get there at 5:30. leave the office at 4:30. ghudson: I should and will find out if they can boot without network. netspeak occurs. everything will be cool. beaners: Tours. I've sent mail out, I even have some mail back. I've got an E40 person, and somoene at AI, and no one at media lab has responded yet. talk to me if you know someone there. rjbarbal (whispered): pascal. beaners: he never responded. shopping for food? anyone? stories after the tours? allocate $75 to buy food? white-ballot. beaners: volunteers for tourguides? EMAIL ME. PLEASE PLEASE. sorokin: Next week's SIPB meeting will be short and poorly attended. yandros: umm, the meeting is also the most attended meeting usually because it's right after the activiites midway. Final solution: the meeting will go on as usual, at 7:30, and be really small, and basically will be for tours to see, and for forwarding people to the tours. IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: we have coke. marc: it's sugar coke. Other: squish is up for ftp. response has been a little disappointing, but several useful features aren't yet activated in the package. there are less than a hundred copies out there. sorokin: clearinghouse sucks. marc: clearinghouse has some nice bugs in it. sorokin: and so I owe marc dinner. mhpower: A freshman stopped by last week and said he was going to convince some sloan guy to change his username so he [the frosh] can have his [the sloan guy's] username. yeah, right. jered: I have a 486DX2/66 which I don't think I'm going to have any luck selling and I could bring it in to SIPB, as a long term loan deal, no monitor or keyboard. sorokin: Bring it in and we'll play with it. we may find a use for it, or not. rfrankel: I have some software from the geometry center that goes on the web and... well, it'll happen. she'll talk to chad. Other Other: This is the hair modification week. sorokin: gsstark is back. he cut his hair and looks a lot like mhbraun. other people who got their hair cut or dyed: sorokin, gsstark, jweiss, midum, cat, shabby, bert, svalente. wow. yandros: We have gregs over matts again. shabby: Next week instead of doing a tour or something silly like that, I'm going to new york to watch the taping of Late Night with Conan O'Brien. sorokin: The fenway soda machine has OK Soda. It actually has been decided that it's ok. rjbarbal: Spelunkers tours, 9pm outside the chapel. cordelia: I'm moving to Huntington in two days. djib: are orange tours still going on? if anyone finds an egg wrapped in a hot dog bun with lots of caution tape, could you tell me? it's on the west parallel. shabby: I don't understand! sorokin will explain everything. Everyone Look At Chad Report: yandros: Everyone seems to be looking at me. there may or may not be frisbee after the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 8ish. Minutes taken and submitted by shabby.
