Chairman's Report: '() Office Report: It's a pit. yoav was going to buy a copy of DNS and Bind from Quantum, they were out, he ordered it, it should be there next week. yandros: dt's keyboard has died. We should probably figure out what needs to happen with this one. It's temporarily fixed... jweiss: I dealt with it more than I care to have. We should be able to send mail to hotline simply, saying we have a busted keyboard, come replace it. warlord: The machines on this side (milq side) of the office were off the net. Err, actually, the net there was flooded, and the Mac was broken, it turns out. jmmikkel: it was corrected by throwing away a cable that was broken. djib: Not sure it entirely solved the problem... After it was done, the net was going away for a short time. sorokin: it does that, they're vax and rt's. looks like the problem with the mac is actually fixed. MIT Computing Report: jweiss: There is a SS20 which is now a mailhub. it has lots of memory. abbe: The Registrar's office has a ****ed up database, and they have a VSII. yandros: Does the SS20 herald the arrival of our memory? shabby: mhbraun said tom has it. greg will probably pick it up and bring it over here. tlyu: frame relay sucks. yandros: framemaker sucks. jweiss: pesto will be in the regular athena pool in the next few days to test 7.7 dialup, instead of in the test dialup pool. jhawk: Dot installed a new version of framels, it seems to have made things worse, not better. Computer Services: yoav: 2x or 3x CD ROM Drive? sorokin: sgw said something about getting the Mac drive to work? yoav: it's so old, and gross... about $400-$450 for a NEC triple-speed drive... $300 for a double-speed... Is there any point to me looking for cheaper versions... sorokin: I'd actually like to suggest we stop and look at our budget before we spend any amount of money like this... We have a budget... ghudson: Equipment budget is $13k... It'll cost around $10k to replace the RT's? Although we may get an SGI from IS. abbe: We've spent $3398 from $13000. but the Dell will be subtracted from that, so we've spent about $200-300 of it. warlord: buying a power supply box and taking the internal cd rom drive out of a SS5 in the machine room? Straw poll occurs, looks like a 3:1 ratio in favor of getting a new CD ROM drive for ~$450. yoav: How about getting a triple-speed over a double-speed considering the price difference? Voted down. He'll look at double-speed prices for next week. sorokin: the web server fell down again... It lost contact with the network, I went in and swore at it, jiggled a couple cables, and it panicked, rebooted and came back up. This was at 5 or 6 PM today. ghudson: the alt hierarchy is now flowing through sipb-server-2, so if anyone notices it's not happening, tell usenet@mit. We'll probably do a news-transport cutover on the 28th... Also, if there's a mailhub running on a SS20, does that mean the 7.tom build is done? jweiss: He's working on getting an install procedure worked out. ghudson: We can do an rtfm cutover after we have that. warlord: I built the uucp stuff... not sure about the map stuff... offline. SIPB Backup Report: We're 12 days overdue for an rtfm backup. anyone gonna do one? warlord: I can probably do AFS backups tomorrow... As linux people might know, someone destroyed all the tarfiles and restored them from backups, but the sendmail one wasn't backed up. eit. yandros: The program that mhpower wrote... It's installed, related to backups, if you have a question ask Dr. Power. (wouldn't you like to be a Power too?) Publications Report: abbe: We're out of iBitmap... sorokin: still? yandros: We're out of a bunch of things, gamadrid was going to deal. jhawk will deal... R/O Report: monty's speakers. xiphmont: Found out what I needed to replace, no place in driving distance carries it. The amp chip went. The speakers cost $70 at lechmere these days. yandros: second. I move we change the allocation that was $45 to $85 so that monty can replacve the speakers that were damaged at the midway. everyone-yoav-sgw(in absentia). IAP Report: jtkohl: This is IAP planning month... CokeComm Report: We have coke. We have ice cream. jhawk: Some spoons have been borrowed from Lobdell for Ben and Jerry's purposes, they're on top of the fridge. wash them. It must be autumn. warlord: four other sites outside of MIT using linuxafs, legally. jhawk: Someone on the internet found the source to RC4... or something. ghudson: using that algorithm could be a violation of a trade secret and people shouldn't do it yet. marc and warlord and other people instantly start yelling. offline. ghudson: someone from IA State has pulled the new zephyr server from our source tree. seems to work okay. Other Other: jered: jcb: Apple Cider party at my house coming up, get added to sipb-soc for details. rjbarbal: Don't walk through central square alone at night, even if you carry a big flashlight. I was threatened last night, outside the police station. abbe: toolfest in Holman 401A after the meeting. jhawk: SIPB needs a new deck of cards. beaners: There are two decks, one is missing about 20 cards. OFFLINE. rcaileff offers to buy a deck if she'll be reimbursed. sorokin gives her a dollar. cordelia: I'm out of Huntington, moving to Senior House. Visit me! I'm trying to scare away my roommate. Mail me if you want to help me move. rjbarbal: The US is not invading Haiti. shabby: I seem to be the last person around here getting this cold. ghudson: Linux was reviewed in Byte in with a positive slant. Everyone Look At Chad Report: svalente: I'd like to rename this report to "Ultimate Frisbee Report" svalente: I move to rename Computer Services to "Everyone look at Greg and Matt Report".
