Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 09/26/94 The meeting was called to order at 17:30 by sorokin. In attendance were Voting members: tlyu sorokin nygren djib gsstark bert yandros cat | harrisj warlord mwhitson dkk jmmikkel beaners Associate members: jweiss jcb xiphmont proven jtkohl mhbraun mkgray eichin svalente | srz sgw Non-voting members: Prospectives: jered jhawk quijote daveg hartmans nathanw elliot mib@gnu.ai.mit.edu hobbit@asylum.sf.ca.us kleinja aragorn sjens ark3 Guests: Treasurer's Report: xiphmont gave the recipt for his speakers (to replace the ones that were broken at the Activities Midway) to all of the wrong people, and eventually to the right person, (Jane). Chairman's Report: ghudson & sorokin made a presentation (with a handout) to the I/S manager's meeting. (Refer to minutes from last March and April). The idea was to give I/S a better idea of who we are and what we do, since many of the people who had a lot of say over our budget didn't know much about us. sorokin says "Y'all better appreciate it, because I got up at 6:50am." A copy of the handout can be found in her SIPB drawer. Office Report: Please try to keep the office clean. It was cleaned up twice this week and it's still a pit. jcb found an old banana under hodge's desk while cleaning up. Discussion of whether the banana was part of a Senior House rush activity. Probably not. We're out of duct tape, and there's a phone cord that needs to be taped. Discussion of whether to move the phone that's by pickled. (One concern is the desk space is also needed for laptops.) Can we hang it from the ceiling? Flamed down. Can we get a "speed bump" (rubber housing) for the floor instead of the duct tape? More discussion. cat will look into getting a speed bump and longer cable. Motion to allocate $10 for duct tape. White ballot. Passes. cat volunteers to get duct tape. The office sometimes "eats" books. Chad has lost several books over the years. Please put books back on the shelves. Postscript level 2 book (Dave Cho's) is missing. so's ghudson's numerical recipies. we find both, and there was much rejoicing. Put recyclables in the correct bins. Several months ago, we allocated money to buy toner cartridges for meadow. what happened? it's not clear. jweiss moves that we allocate $300 to buy up to two toner cartridges. White ballot. Approved. cat will deal. Renetworking the office with UTP will happen the same time as the rest of the cluster gets done. mhbraun has details. MIT Computing Report: diebenkorn (sp?) sucks. 4000 users were moved to po8.mit.edu. Three mailings were lost. jweiss and tlyu lost mail because they had mail on both their old and new po machines. Other users also experienced the problem of mail on two po machines. Talk to mhbraun if this happens to you. Computer Services: Anxiety-closet is panicking frequently, or at least needs to be rebooted frequently. It's dying the same way senator-bedfellow died when it was our maxine that was overloaded. Panic message is often "sleep". We've seen this failure mode on the dialups, but don't know the cause. The symptoms suggest that the machine may be running out of swap space. charon died for "strange reasons". yandros thinks it's lonely. It didn't believe it had an external disk. ckclark booted it off the internal disk, first from the "alternate" root (old) and then, after firguring out the problem, from the real root. external disk is an RZ55, which "will probably die". Discussion of whether boot parameters were set up properly. ronald-ann hung. We suspect warlord had something to do with this, since it hung when he inc'ed his mail. mkgray says the only hint we have is that ronald-ann coming up coincided with quiche-lorraine being rebooted. Some work was done on the old CD-ROM next to dt. sgw couldn't get it to work. Discussion of whether to put one of the CD-ROM's from the machine room into an external SCSI case. Tabled. SIPB Backup Report: warlord will do backups from home tonight, as long as someone is here to change tapes. Publications Report: We still need iBitmap. jhawk will *really* get it done this week. svalente is working on iLinux-Athena. Move to allocate funds to make 20 copies. White ballot. Passes. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: People doing courses should talk to mwhitson, since he's doing the online IAP guide. mwhitson volunteers to make sure the paperwork gets done. CokeComm Report: We don't have coke. The jerk will be buying Coke this week. The jerk mentioned that he would have gotten a better grade on his French paper if he had talked about "mustard" instead of "ketchup". dkk is now a BJ's member, so he may be able to help gamadrid do Coke runs. Other: '() Other Other: The Ig Nobel ceremony is Thurs. 10/6 in Kresge. Tix are available for $2 from the museum shop. Ignitaries get in free. sgw: The Grateful Dead are playing six shows starting tomorrow. cat: will be happy to bitch about her computer. Also imagine Jessie as a six-year-old. ("wearing that dress") sgw: the Geo. Madrid fashion report: cat is dressed in a slinky black leather dress showing a lot of cleavage. jcb: I went to a Morris dancing event in New Jersey, which was lots of fun. Also, my Morris team is hosting a large event in and around Boston this weekend. More info can be found in http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/jcb/Middlesex-SDMMAT.html mwhitson: Frame Relay 4; linux-AFS 0 sgw: went to a conference in San Diego. It's a great place to get bronchitis. svalente: There's a They Might Be Giants concert coming up. Also a BNL concert. He's not sure he can afford this much excitement in one month. warlord: his RSA-129 paper was accepted to AsiaCrypt. He doesn't think he'll get to go, though. jered: volunteers to shut up. xiphmont: leaving the country. (some cheers, some jeers). Plane departs at 11:10am on Sunday 10/2. (Northwest Airlines) tlyu: I went to New Hampshire and it was OK. warlord: My advisor asked me to go to Singapore to give a talk. He asked if it would be illegal for him to leave the country. hobbit: there's a plague outbreak in India. Post-Meeting Ultimate Report: '() The meeting was adjourned at 20:09. Minutes taken and submitted by jcb.
