In attendance were Voting members: gsstark jhawk sorokin djib rjbarbal jmmikkel cat ghudson warlord yonah jered hartmans beaners tlyu Associate members: mkgray jtkohl eichin proven jweiss sekullbe yandros | sgw Non-voting members: Prospectives: nathanw rshah cordelia klmitch rrickhus mwp akatlas elliot daveg seborn | oschwar sjens Guests: Treasurer's Report: rjbarbal: has anyone looked into getting chairs for the office? sorokin: If rjbarbal want's to do something useful, go ahead. rjbarbal: I'll check out prices Chairman's Report: rjbarbal: People should send comments to whither-sipb on the bylaws. See the bboard above keesh. Office Report: jered: Limekiller likes memory in pairs. ghudson: currently we have two 16MB SIMMs and two 4MB SIMMS (one of the 16MB SIMMs is new). We were planning to put the new 16MB SIMM in limekiller, but limekiller wants paired simms, so instead we're exchanging the 16MB SIMM for two 8MB SIMMs. It'll cost about $100. Lola will then have 24MB memory and limekiller will have 16MB memory, as previously planned. jered: I move we allocate up to $150 for the exchange of 1 16M SIMM for 2 8M SIMMs. 9-1-4, Motion passes jweiss: pickled-herring will become a beta machine tonight as was decided long ago. At some point yaz and bill will become beta machines as well. Is this agreed? jered: For 7.7 or 7.8? jweiss: A 7.7 release warlord: Having both maxines beta might not be a good idea... ghudson: We should have the new sun (to replace the web server) soon. jered: Does bill still suck? Should this matter? sorokin: No. Any serious objections left? cat: The current speedbump situation is temporary. It will be modified in the near future. rjbarbal: Clean the office. jhawk: The alarm was tripped yesterday or something. Notify dcns-cluster or hotline. MIT Computing Report: jweiss: Patch relase of 7.7 coming out shortly. Out of the dev.mit.edu cell, instead of the rel-eng.mit.edu cell. rshah: An AFS problem occured this morning. People came into SIPB reporting problems, some machines in the cluster were power cycled. This is bad. A class filsrv message should be sent to perhaps discourage this. NOTE: SIPB members should NOT NOT NOT send this message. jweiss: It is more likely to happen in the future. A bunch of read only's were taken from a top level volume server this morning, this may have contributed, but maybe not. Ask Jonathan for details. sorokin: People should discuss offline any other cool ideas they have. jhawk: The w20 cluster has at least 2 beta machines. We should know which ones they are. jweiss: No, the cluster has staff-test machines. That comes a little later, and then we should be aware. If the machine has 'test' in it's name, it's a good hint. Computer Services: mhpower: Some priveledged moira information was sent to a SIPB list. It's been dealt with. ghudson: Regarding the Sparc20's falling off the net. We found a patch. It wasn't actually relevant, but it amused us. SIPB Backup Report: warlord: It's being backed up. It should be done around 10. jered: I've figured out how to backup. I will be using the tape drive less. Publications Report: mhpower: R/O Report: '() IAP Report: hartmans: Do we want LSC slides? mkgray: Maybe the "You Will" poster. sorokin: People should talk to mwhitson. rjbarbal: Shall I modify last year's slide? sorokin: Nah, it was offensive then and irrelevant now. Let's not. mhpower: rjbarbal's IAP guide is not next to milquetoast sorokin: In the future, don't throw away rjbarbal's free publications. sgw: If you find a free publication you want to throw away, put it in rjbarbal's drawer. rjbarbal: Don't throw things away with people's names on it. yandros: Check to see whether your activity is in the IAP Guide. CokeComm Report: jhawk: We have no coke. We have A&W, Diet Coke, and Sprite. yandros: The jerk's aware of the lack of coke, but he's hosed. If anyone else can buy coke that would be good. Other: ghudson: Lola reports "40M of memory is better than sex", but it was only for a few minutes. jtkohl: Usenix is in New Orleans this January. Some student stipends may be availabe. check comp.org.usenix for details. jered: Monty's friends visited. We talked to them and answered their questions. They gave us chopsticks. mhpower: We gave them a tour of the machine room. They said "Thank you very much" at least 17 times. They also said, "No. Two gigabytes is not good to keep news." hartmans: A new newsgroup, alt.sex.doom.with.sound jhawk: My RFC is going to be a proposed standard warlord: My RFC is becoming an internet draft soon. sgw: I've never written an RFC. nathanw: Thomas Jefferson HS for Sci&Tech is running zephyr. proven: Solaris boxes explode nicely when you pass a pointer to the kernal when it asks for an offset. warlord: Linux, as of 1.1.72 now has multicast report. I built some of it. Some of it works, some of it doesn't. jhawk: pickled violates RFC 1122 -- source routing doesn't work. i'm really disappointed. sgw: Sun makes these cool boxes called SPARCServer 1000 but SUN doesn't know whether you can have more than 255 users. i'm really disappointed. Other Other: warlord: I now have network to my house. elliot: Canadian Internet eXchange will be operating soon; Canadian traffic will no longer go by the NSFNet. cat: I find it disturbing that warlord is wearing pink and purple. djib: A new game using the Doom engine, called "Heretic" is coming out soon. Highlights include turning your opponent into a chicken. jered: System Shock CD coming out RSN. rjbarbal: Rumors that Twirlfish agents have been captured by the CIA are unfounded. yandros: One for rjbarbal and another for Jenny and the wimp. The meeting was adjourned at 20:05. Minutes taken and submitted by mkgray.
