Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 08/2/1999


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by gisele.

Office Report:
	xela: I have received more feeback about the chairs. People like
		the Steelcase chairs. People don't think much of the 
		features on the featureful chair. I suggest we order 6
		more chairs, 3 with arms, 3 without arms. Move to allocate
		$3500 for 6 more Steelcase Criterion basic black chairs.
	[jered seconds]

	jweiss: Excluding the 2 chairs that I'm to remove from the
		office, do we have 6 chairs that need replacing? My
		gut feeling is that this early in the year we want to
		spend $3000 on chairs if we're not sure we have that
		many that need replacing.
	xela: My original impression was that we wanted to replace a
		whole lot of chairs.
	marc: Is there any difficulty in ordering 4, and then getting
		two more later?
	xela: That's fine.
	jweiss: Friendly amendment for up to $2000 for 3 chairs.
	xela: I'd prefer even numbers for arm vs. armless.

	jered: I've heard a lot of discontentment with the Herman
		Miller chairs that we got.  If we're going to try
		to returm them, we should do that now. Do people
		think we should try to return them?
	zacheiss: I actually like the HM chair I have now. [pink]
	jered: Move to attempt to return the black HM chair.

	cfox: The only problem is that you can't recline a long way.
		It gives great back support otherwise. But,
		variety is good.

	xela: Move to punt the ugly pink HM chair.

	jhawk: It doesn't suck. The black chair sucks a lot more.
		It's really not that pink. The carpet is pinker.
		Lets keep it.
	zacheiss: I happen to like this chair.
	jweiss: I'll point out that when you sit in a chair, you have
		to look at it less.

	jweiss: I'm punting on getting rid of the 2 old chairs by one
		week.

Office Cleaning Report:
	jweiss: It looks like it needs to happen.
	
MIT Computing Report:
	zacheiss: 8.3 went out. It was ok.
	cfox: People should stop adding the eddietwo locker. (Many of
		the 8.3 problems I've encountered have been from
		people adding eddietwo annd running xzewd.)

Computer Services:
	jweiss: The server maintainers should think about what they
		want to buy this year soon. I'm getting increasing
		pressure to deliver a server budget.
		
	
SIPB Backup Report:
	zachiess: I did AFS. I did penguin-lust, charon, picayune.
		Yandros did www.

Publications Report:
	cfox: We've had people looking for up to date new student
		documentation.
	gisele: Will someone deal with getting more from IS?
	jweiss: I do not believe the new new student packets are out
		yet.  We could get more out-of-date packets, and I'm
		not even sure about that.

	xela: It's IAP Planning Planning Planning month. We have
		committments for 4 IAP classes so far. You want to
		teach something during IAP, really! Talk to me to find
		out more.

	jered: I'm looking for an interesting and rewarding job for
		the fall. Talk to me if you have a suggestion.

	xela: I'm looking for one or two students who want
		uninteresting and not very rewarding part-time jobs
		for the fall.
