Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 08/9/1999 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by foley. In attendance were Voting members: jered zacheiss lockhart foley | yak Associate members: marc eichin dbj rjbarbal belmonte fastcart tb jweiss | jhawk mhpower Non-voting members: Prospectives: xela nemo mwp@mwpnet.com arolfe lgdean ocschwar | alien hforh Guests: Treasurer's Report: foley: Nothing interesting happening. I haven't dealt with the ROLES database yet, waiting for news back from Jane. Chairman's Report: foley: The chair is not here. marc: Have you ever run a meeting before? foley: Yes, once. And everyone was very afraid. Office Report: fastcart: We discussed getting a better video card for snork. Move to allocate $130 for a TNT PCI card for snork. [tb seconds] marc: Which card? fastcart: I don't know. A Diamond or an Elsa. jered: How much memory does that have? fastcart: 16 MB. dbj: There's a difference between the TNT, the TNT2 and the UltraTNT2. I don't recommend the TNT at all, the TNT2 is much newer. fastcart: I don't think snork has an AGP port. zacheiss: This is true. dbj: That makes the TNT2 useless. I don't think it's worth getting a TNT then. jhawk: Some have asserted that snork needs to be identical to anti-snork. jered: ghudson has stated that snork just needs to be at least as good as anti-snork. jhawk: Others have said differently. fastcart: Discussion on zephyr today seemed to agree that the video card could be different. jweiss: People may be more familiar with anti-snork as charon2 or new-charon. yak: What's wrong with snork's video card now? dbj: Friendly amendment to "a better video card" and move specifics offline. Do we need a card that's optimized for 3D rendering? What features do we want? The TNT 3D support won't work with the OSes we use. fartcart: The current video card only does 8-bit color. marc: What would the TNT card buy us over, say, a G200? fastcart: I don't know. The reason I suggested TNT is because I have one, other machines in the office have one, and I know it's supported by XFree. jhawk: Amendment to get "up to two nicer video cards, for up to $400", fastcart can make the final decision on what card to get after consulting with people. [amendment accepted] [9-0-3, motion passes] tb: The SIPB bandaids suck, the glue is not good. Move to allocate $100 for a first aid kit. [jhawk seconds] belmonte: Does it really cost $100? tb: Probably not. rjbarbal: I recommend you get a backboard as well. tb: I'll consider it. [white-ballot, motion passes] tb: There are several IP addresses and hostnames allocated for laptop use in the office. There is no actual list of these addresses, however. Anyone who has data on these addresses, please send them to me so I can create a comprehensive list for office denizens. jhawk: There are personal addresses on the SIPB office network not for general consumption. jweiss: I'll be auctioning 2 chairs immediately after the meeting. Office Cleaning Report: '() MIT Computing Report: jweiss: Tonight is a big night. We're expecting both 8.3.15 and a quota increase to 30M. zacheiss: As of Wednesday of last week, all academic print servers are running LPRng. xela: It's kinda eerie to walk up to a printer and see your username on the LCD. Computer Services: jhawk: The third and final W20 power outage will take place this Thursday, from 7pm to 7am. It also coincides with other outages across campus, including one at Random. SIPB Backup Report: zacheiss: I did them. Publications Report: rjbarbal: They look ok. We should think about getting extra documents soon since it's going to be beginning of term. jhawk: We need iMATLAB. Move to approve $50 for 100 copies of iMATLAB. [zacheiss seconds] [white-ballot, motion passes] Orientation Report: lgdean: Tours. We want someone to get food. [xela volunteers] We are thinking Thursday, September 9, first Thursday of classes, same as last year. I'll be looking for tour guides and tour sites. xela: Move for a $100 food budget for tours. [tb seconds, white-ballot, motion passes] belmonte: We have the opportunity to submit an article on us to the Tech. Has anyone expressed interest in this? alien: I'll write the article. foley: Should we do this? Straw poll: [many-few-some] tb: I ask the text of the article be reviewed by the EC before publication. IAP Report: xela: We have committments for 6 IAP activities. CokeComm Report: foley: We have some Coke. jhawk: It's not from CokeComm, though. Other: tb: Athena quotas are going up to 30M. That's 100 times biger than the standard CMU quota when I was a freshman. Other Other: jered: LILO sucks. tb: GRUB does not suck. jhawk: People with cool ideas on how I should market $2 bills next term should tell me. belmonte: North Carolina is very hot. fastcart: Fastcart version 4.0 should be here within a month. xela: Please tell me it doesn't run Windows CE. foley: I got my first motorcycle injury this weekend.
