Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/1/2002 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tibbetts. In attendance were Voting members: arolfe cana kolya aatharuv tibbetts aletta nim Associate members: hartmans jhawk rjbarbal jemorris tb xela jweiss srz | marc Non-voting members: Prospectives: the_geek mwp kareid Guests: Treasurer's Report: nim: We're in the next fiscal year. Yay. tibbetts: How much money do we have - I've never checked that at the beginning of the fiscal year. nim: $38,000. Our recurring expenses are $10,000 plus or minus $5000. tibbetts: Does that depend on the treasurer's trip to Tijuana? nim: Yes. Chairman's Report: tibbetts: The chairman missed two meetings. It was a nice vacation. It wasn't as nice as Tijuana. Office Report: jweiss: There will be an auction after the meeting next week. In related news, there are two sparc5s on the floor of the office. One of them I don't think I have control over. Move to get rid of one at the discretion of the Office Czar in Charge of Special Operations. My discretion at this case includes whether to include any peripherals. hartmans: What was this? jweiss: Old multics, I thing. arolfe: Do you have authority to get rid of those disks over there? jweiss: No. Move to get rid of all 2GB hard drives in the office that are not attached to anything. jhawk: I'd be much happier if you scoped it to the shelf. I so move an amendment. nim: Can I amend this to not include monitor stands? jweiss: I'd prefer to not have that. tibbetts: I propose it as a hostile amendment. tibbetts: That was more procedure than I'd ever had before in my time here. jweiss: I apologize for my jhawkish nature. marc: This chair I'm sitting on is still broken - is anyone dealing with this? jweiss: No, no one is doing anything about this. We suck. jhawk: Is this chair still broken - is anyone dealing with it? tibbetts: We got a new machine. It doesn't have an operating system on it, this is sad. warlord said he was going to take a look at it. jhawk: VWR has cheap temperature/humidity widgets, we should get one, for about $25. I so move. [jhawk allocation: $25 for a temp/humidity widget] aatharuv: CAC wants to clean our carpets. Originally they said they wanted to do it later this week. But since there's lots of auction crap going out next Monday, it probably makes sense to delay it. tibbetts: Is Thursday good? (7/18) Ok, tell them so. aatharuv: I'll do that. hartmans: Do we need snork's monitor, on the floor? tibbetts: Is zorp's monitor or snork's monitor nicer? hartmans: I would like to move to get rid of a monitor? tb: Any monitor in particular? tibbetts: Some monitor at the discretion of the Office Czar in Charge of Special Operations. We have lots. tibbetts: SIPB should take a vow of poverty, that would be cool. marc: Along with our vow of chastity? tibbetts: It doesn't count if it's involuntary, marc. Office Cleaning Report: MIT Computing Report: Computer Services: hartmans: SIPB Debian is moving forward. We continue to interactively approach having stuff working. I haven't heard from the person working on our docs in a couple of weeks, we may want someone new for that if they don't pop up soon. Progress is happening on all other fronts. aatharuv: I think kenta is away, home or something. hartmans: Oh, ok. jhawk: I've been attempting to lobby to get one or more of our UPSs relocated to W20-410t so the SIPB portion of the net doesn't fall down when the power goes out. I think it would make lobbying easier if it had a network card. I move for $250 to buy such a network card. marc: Is there any reason to believe - have we asked them about this yet? jhawk: It is only my personal belief that this network card would make it more likely. tibbetts: Can we make it contingent on network's acceptance? jhawk: Ok. [jhawk allocation: $250 for an APC UPS network card] SIPB Backup Report: tibbetts: steve-dallas is on the backup now. In some way, this means the ufs backup system is actively maintained. hartmans: AFS backups failed yesterday, I think because there wasn't an expired tape. Publications Report: Orientation Report: aletta: There was the freshman mailing stuffing. They don't have us bring 200 extra anymore, they actually estimate correctly. arolfe: Unless I misread the ASA info file, we missed the deadline for signing up for a table at the midway. tibbetts: Oo. I will attempt to exert ASA slime. IAP Report: CokeComm Report: Other: hartmans: My plans to escape MIT have hit a slight snag, in that I started working for IS full-time today. tb: If you are ever tempted to think that MIT network or other such groups suck, come talk to me about the University of California, and I will fix your error. marc: The fact that the grass is actively burning in LA does not mean that it's not decaying here. tibbetts: Overextended metaphor much? Other Other: tb: California is not as cool as Massachusetts. hartmans: You are so wrong, in terms of temperatures. jweiss: There is a blood drive, tomorrow and Wednesday. 12-6 on Tuesday, 10-4 on Wednesday. The meeting was adjourned at 19:47. Minutes taken and submitted by cana.
