Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 15/09/2003 The meeting was called to order at 19:36:07 by golem. In attendance were Voting members: kchen arolfe jtu keithw merolish ike golem | glasser Associate members: jemorris gschmidt jhawk rjbarbal nim lnemzer ocschwar Prospectives: mwp jleung astronut wjh Guests: Treasurer's Report: golem: We have no treasurer. Chairman's Report: golem: We have elections, but I'm going to, as per recent tradition, move them to the end of the meeting. golem: Can someone tell me whatever happened with that Tech thing? jhawk: No formal opinion was provided. golem: Okay so basically we lamed out. Not necessarily a bad thing. golem: We don't have any officers left. We don't have to elect a chair, luckily, but we do have to elect a vice chair, a secretary, and a treasurer. nim: Did the secretary ask to resign, or...? golem: The secretary has a class during the meeting time. golem: The vice chair is in charge of computer services and anything the chair lames out on. I nominate keithw. [ike seconds] keithw: I accept provisionally. golem: What do you mean? You can't accept provisionally. keithw: I accept for now. keithw: I nominate merolish. merolish: I decline. jtu: Did we figure out who's eligible? golem: arolfe, ike, jtu, keithw. No one else showed up who's eligible. keithw: How about kenta? golem: He's inactive. belmonte: Is it possible to go inactive over the summer? golem: It's more complex than that. Some people went inactive because they didn't come to meetings right before the summer. [rjbarbal reads the Vice Chair description] ike: I'll accept the nomination... keithw: I decline. [6-1-0 ike is vice chair] golem: We have two positions and three people who are eligible for them, so I'm just going to nominate all of them. [rjbarbal reads treasurer description] jtu: No! keithw: I respectfully decline. keithw: "I accept! I would like to run LSC and SIPB! My name is Alex! Ignore that person to my right!" arolfe: I'll accept just to piss you off. [8-0-0 arolfe is treasurer] golem: Okay, we have two candidates for secretary. jhawk: Can we move to suspend the requirement that candidates have been members for a full term? [rjbarbal reads secretary description] jhawk: rjbarbal agrees that we can do that. Are there currently ineligible people who want to run? Okay, I guess there's no interest, so whatever. golem: merolish is wavering. merolish: Well, I'd have to come to every meeting. jtu: Move to change whatever needs to be changed so that kchen, glasser, or merolish can be secretary. [Seconded. 7-0-1 motion to suspend the rules passes] glasser: Was that for today, or permanerntly? golem: We didn't decide, so I declare that it's just for today. [rjbarbal reads secretary description] golem: Sounds like merolish just accepted. Any other nominations for secretary? Okay, let's vote him into office then. Can we have some ballots? [7-0-1 merolish is secretary] golem: One thing left for the meeting we have to elect a rest of an ExecComm. We've lost all our members except jtu. As I predicted, we have exactly as many positions as we have eligible members. keithw: Unless they decline. golem: Well if they decline we're up shit creek. [golem nominates glasser, kchen, keithw, and rax] golem: I declare by executive action that `yes' or `all' means the same as `glasser, kchen, keithw, and rax.' rjbarbal: Do not put down three names, however, because if you put down three names that's invalid. keithw: Is there a reason for that? rjbarbal: Yes, and I'm not even going to try to explain it now. [8-0-0 glasser, kchen, keithw, and rax are ExecComm members] Office Report: arolfe: Since there was recently some confusion over people keeping stuff in the office, I move that jhawk not be allowed to keep his possessions in the office unattended and outside his closed drawer. [seconded] jhawk: I think this is sort of mean and annoying -- in particular that the case that led to this was my leaving a box and forgetting about it, and then tibbetts ejecting it from the office. belmonte: This is ad hominem and stupid. You could make a general rule. arolfe: It may be ad hominem and stupid, but it's appropriate. rjbarbal: I think the message has been made clear already. If it continues we may want to have a rule. ike: I agree that it's ad hominem and stupid, but I still support it. Is there another option? rjbarbal: There are a couple options. We could take away his drawer space. ike: You mean, no drawer space and just limit him to the pile on the floor? rjbarbal: Another option is to give him a larger drawer, since his small one is obviously inadequate. A third option is to have an auction box, as APO does. This will give jhawk clear indication that he's been leaving stuff around, assuming that he chooses to look in there. ocschwar: Um, this doesn't just apply to cases like this, this applies almost universally. If you have a beef with another SIPB member, or another human being in general, you should talk to them first. Flame first, then propose to move people's stuff around. arolfe: We did flame! golem: I think my two cents would be that jhawk has been warned many times. However, I oppose this particular motion because it would be extreme. The only person who has made such infractions in the past is jhawk, therefore an ad hominem rule is appropriate in this case. [4-6-3 motion fails] Office Cleaning Report: ike: Looks like people haven't been leaving too too much junk around. I'm not too grumpy. Last week I moved the licence plates up there. They are stable unless you want to, like, dance against the bulletin board. golem: Like Michael Jackson? ike: Maybe like Neo. jhawk, those are sharp. MIT Computing Report: golem: I hear there was like a virus and like everyone's DHCP went bad or something. jtu: Security is about a week behind in reactivating drops. golem: Don't let me leave again, because clearly this was caused by my absence. Computer Services: keithw: The Library Access to Music project is soliciting suggestions for its CD purchase. Submit suggestions at "http://lamp.mit.edu/survey" by tonight. ike: And when you get them? keithw: They will be accessible to all on demand. The legal stuff is still not there, but Loudeye's new lawyer is an indie rock musician, so she's making fast progress. Publications Report: ike: We're out of iUsenet and iBitmaps. Orientation Report: golem: How'd it go? It's still going on. ike: Some frosh came to the other meeting but not this one. Also, we will have tours on Wednesday the 24th. I have confirmations from all the stops. golem: We need to arrange vans. Who dealt with that last year? ike: jtu. golem: I also heard that some Midway stuff happened. keithw: We showed Jay Leno over and over again, at very high resolution. Many freshmen signed up. Did anyone send mail this week? kchen: There was a suggestion that freshmen might not be interested in elections, so we didn't send mail. IAP Report: jtu: glasser and I are looking for people to help the IAP sucker, because neither of us wants to be it, so we've decided to not be it together. keithw: I'm thinking of teaching an IAP class that would be -i legal, the class version. golem: In which you will brainwash the masses? keithw: Yes. I'm also considering a class based on -i nytq. CokeComm Report: merolish: jenselby needs to get more candy so I can run up another $50. Other Other: merolish: I'm taking a class at Harvard this term. nim: I'm baaaack. keithw: What are you? nim: Nothing at the moment. I'm looking for a job. Does anyone want to hire me? keithw: I've heard that a member of this organisation was overheard telling a journalist that we were evil. So be on the lookout for informers, reds, and communists in our midst. merolish: I second that. keithw: It was you! You communists are all the same. merolish: This does not compute. keithw: Have you no sense of decency, Mr Rolish? I ask you! golem: I suppose communists made me remember, I was in some other country for a while. keithw: How was that country? golem: It was nice. I felt protected and safe. keithw: A guy hanging an American flag outside his window to honour September 11th was required to take it down, because of the Institute's new fatwah against flags. Also people with Canadian and United Kingdom flags have been required to take them down. Sucks: ocschwar: The current software used for demos for 18.03. all: sucks! The meeting was adjourned at 20:17:28. Minutes taken and submitted by belmonte.
