Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 3 March 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by archy. In attendance were RLL, Alan, CRD, archy, BSG, CAH, Naha, DCP, WER, BarMar, ACW, J9, BIM, GMP, RDM, ZRM, DGH, RMPII and 4 users. Late were: c|, Gonzo, JIS, Soley. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted. ****User Interrupts**** Greg Smith wants $100 on Multics to complete a UROP project and do text editing. Had $100 previously this year. Given. Tom Boyle wants some money to be able to send data to Multics and then have Multics punch the programs into card decks for 15.571. Archy gave a good reading of the course description, which caused a good deal of laughter in the office. Rejected. It was motioned and seconded that the chairman send a letter to the instructors of 15.571 and Course 15 Department head explaining how Course 15 is now in the Dark Ages with respect to the rest of the MIT Computing Facilities. Tom Boyle was given funds on the Coop project. MITSeekers (Doug Pape) wants $40 additional to continue text editing of their membership lists. Given. Mike Meurer wants $200 on Troll for a statistical analysis of child birth and fertility in third world countries for a UROP project. Given. Robert Proctor wants $40 additional to complete an article for the American Mathematical Association. Given. Treasurer's Report: We have spent $46,309.57 so far this fiscal year. We need to spend approximately $12,100 each month for the next 4 months. We have spent $857.47 so far this month (roughly 5 days). Penny walked in at this point. Chairman's Report: The chairman still has not talked to Chris Wheeler of the SCC. The chairman also noted that the UAVP asked for good suggestions on how to spend the $50,000 that was found. It would probably be a good idea to get some of this for a graphics terminal. RLL will go to the FinBoard meeting this Wednesday to find out. Office Report: KTOC. The office refrigerator was not defrosted. People were again told this week to print the whole dprint from the spinwriter print queues. People should sign up for office hours and be there when they are signed up. Also people should help to keep the office clean. Computer Services: Honeywell now has the new and final?? contract. Please do not play around with the SIPB registrar, especially to register ficticious persons (i.e. James Bond). People who come in from the ARPA net and use the SIPB student start_up do not get process preservation anymore. This was causing problems earlier this week. When you use SIPB_registrar, BE SURE to mark down the userid that you extract. RMP has found a new copying service almost directly across from C.W.Beane's. c| will check out competing prices for copying in the area. The Student2 project is looking closer -- the Student dir now takes up 61 records. We are looking into other things we can do, since we and Roger Roach would not like to see Student2 happen. The installation of Multics 34.16 would fix our problems (it allows > 64 record dirs to be salvaged), but it looks like it will be a while before this happens. ****User Interrupt**** Gerald Hammer wants an amount of money on Multics to edit text files for 21.747. The files will be used as his thesis when he is completed. Motion to reject - fails. Motion to defer to next week - passes. (This is to get a note from his thesis advisor). Soley walked in at this point. Telecommunications Report: The Ramtek terminal will be leaving tomorrow morning. A terminal from J & J associates will be appearing tomorrow afternoon (about 1:30 P.M.), to leave about 5 P.M. There will be a terminal meeting Thursday night at 20:00 to discuss the terminals we have seen. The terminal from the Student Center was moved out (to the Gymnastics meet) and back on Saturday. It was mentioned that we should tell users that are going to use the Student Center terminals that they are going to be paying for HSLA charges in addition to login time. (And therefore their money will disappear a bit faster than usual). Notice that this is true for the Heath terminals in Delphi. It was mentioned that the Delphi terminal room will become non-public next week (all terminals will be hard-wired to Course 6's new PDP-20). HSLA charges are $(1.25 .75 1.00 1.00) flat rate addition per hour during shift (1 2 3 4). ZRM will be producing a new Multics rate chart. Gonzo walked in at this point. Publications Report: The Emacs information sheets got to Beane earlier this week; they are ready. They should be gotten soon. Publicity Report: A slide will be displayed at LSC movies the weekend following this weekend. DCP is working on it. Postering of the institute needs to be done soon. Other: There was a motion to banish Benson to France for two more months. Passes. He will be forced to leave TOMORROW! A prospective member has appeared; Jay Patton, who just started working for ARCS. On the floating agenda: there was an idea that Member.*.* should have sma on the tops of several SIPB projects as a convenience. There was no formal policy set - left to the individual SIPBADMIN people's discretion. The question was brought up as to whether we should spend $300 to get a new keyboard for the office TV (one of Kulp's new Hyper-Super-Greek-etc. keyboards). RLL reminded the board that we have already paid for the keyboard; therefore we WILL be receiving it. DCP will find out whether or not the old type keyboard will still be supported when the new ones appear. Applications: Leppingwell, John W. R., $70, editing for 24.231 and STS-100. Has had $100. There was a motion to give. Passes. Margolin, Barry (BARMAR), $100, for text editing and more learning (Lisp, Multics, etc.) Has had $140. Deferred until next week, when he knows how much he needs. Huang, Chien Yu, $75, for text editing project lab report for Course 16. Taken to meeting because this is Course 16's equivalent to a thesis. Given. Douglas, E. T., $100, for learning CMS for future use. Motion to give - passes. People were reminded to remind users that 370 usage is not always the best thing for all things. 370 applications would still be presented in meeting. Rowe, Wendy E. (WER), no amount, for papers for 21.004. Motion to give $100. Passes. $1190 Student, $0 ECS; $1190 total autoed. $300 VM. $0 by EC vote. $555 by meeting. Total: $2045 (not including Coop). Other Other: Steve Ladd, of FinBoard, has told us that the board has five openings! We should probably saturate it if possible. Today is the 2nd anniversary of Multics Emacs; Emacs was also taken out of >exl today! It is an official Honeywell product. RK is on his way back, to work for Wang in Lowell. Soley is starting an IBM 370 Assembly mode for Multics Emacs. The meeting was adjourned at 23:14. Minutes taken and submitted by Richard Mark Soley and Richard L. Lawhorn
