Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 5 May 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by archy. In attendance were Richard Soley, GMP, BARMAR, CAH, archy, KHS, NAHA, JIS, ALAN, c|, JSL, Jay, WER, Gonzo, HGA, Don Abrams, DCP, RK, RLL, RDM, and one user. Late were: J9 and ZRM. ***User Interrupt*** Strong, Allan, $100, to type his 20 page thesis for course six by this Friday. Has not time for departmental red tape. Motion to give - Passes. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted. ZRM and J9 came in at this point. ***User Interrupt*** Blackwell, William, for the MIT Appropriate Technology Group, $30, for text editing reports, doing some calculations. Motion to give $75 - passes. Treasurer's Report: We spent $11,274 last month. We have spent about $65,000 so far this year. We have spent over $3,000 so far this month. At this rate, we could spend $80,000 this year. RLL will start the works to sell the SpinWriter to IPS. Chairman's Report: The chairman finished and delivered a budget letter to Wes Burner. Wes still believes that we should get a hardware budget only every two years. Therefore we have a possibility of about $20K for hardware this coming year. Office Report: LUPD. There was a motion to ban DPC from the loft. It was ignored. Seth cleared out his drawer. Warning: one of the useless chairs in the office (currently under the treasurer) is very dangerous. It might disappear soon. The Office Clock is dead. Computer Services: CAH has been breaking all of the various absentees this week. Most everything has been fixed. More will be fixed. The logs now come once/week. The printer statistics are calculated and sent automatically by the weekly. The monthly now automatically does the nbdd backup. When you use SIPB_print, you must type "x log_init" after logging it in. The entry-level Multics level system being looked at by IPS costs $660K. Because of the way IPS runs, we will not be able to get discounts for Multics time. Perhaps some time in the future SIPB will own its own small Multics! Honeywell also renamed all of its hardware. CS Report: The CS short course will still be held this Saturday, May 10, 1980, at 2:00 P.M. Telecommunications Report: RLL found the money for the LA120 that was sold to IPS and paid for the ADM3A with it. The ADM3A is on its way. NAHA rearranged the wiring in the Student Center terminal room and documented it (see the board and the office manual). DCP and RLL bought 4 boxes of SpinWriter ribbons. We need many, many more. (Theses are on the way!) RLL will order a gross of ribbons tomorrow. One of the lines to the Student Center is still dead. The LA120 seems to be down again. Three times lately, though, the LA120 has been called in when it was in perfect working order. Check out the LA120 when problems are reported! The SpinWriter STILL needs to be called in. (The vertical registration is not quite correct, and therefore underscoring doesn't quite work.) The New House terminal was called in. It is blowing fuses. Publications Report: The Emacs wall chart revision has not yet been done. There is a minor revision of the Policy Statement on the board; comment. Publicity Report: There were various ideas about registering all incoming freshman. They were dropped. This report will self-destruct in one week. R/O Report: We need: space at this Midway. NAHA will be the Midway chairman. We need: someone to run the tour. HGA will run the SIPB computer tour. We MUST remember to get FOUR PHONES for the Midway. The freshman mailing (letter) seems to have passed board (pun intended) inspections, and should be sent off soon. JIS is working on a tour of some part of DEC. See him for info/ideas. There was an idea to put the Form B, and possibly the Policy Statement, in with the freshman letter. It will not be done. Elections: The pertinent parts of the SIPB constitution were read. The Senior House Steer Roast last Saturday was closed down at about 1 A.M. by the CPs because of complaints of noise from Beacon Hill.
