I will forward this to hal@ai.mit.edu since it is ultimately his decision.
I dont think he will be interested, though, since he is going to be protective
about non-6001 students using these machines. They are very powerful so they
will be in high demand, but they our for our course and nobody else... Hal
and Gerry personally negotiated the gift from HP so they are very territorial
about it.

Sure, I'll be glad to show the little critters the Garden.

A half hour is a good time slot, given that tours inevitably run
behind schedule. Fifteen minutes is a good minimum. I can talk for a
long time.

Ideal group size? One. I'd be pleasantly surprised if the groups
were less than a dozen.

Hi... I'm helping to organize this year's SIPB computer tour. This
is a computer tour aimed at freshmen and incoming graduate students
to show them interesting computer resources and labs around campus.
We've done this for many years, and the freshmen seem to enjoy seeing
the neat hardware around campus. The different research groups get an
opportunity to show off their stuff to potential UROPs.

This year's tour will be on Thursday, September 10th, from 7pm to 10pm.
We will divide into small groups, and visit various locations.

Would you be interested in demoing the One-legged robot lab? Or know
somebody who would? This would involve staying around Thursday night,
giving a demo to the groups, and answering questions.

If so, what's an ideal group size for your area? How long is the
ideal demo? The final arrangements will depend on how many stops we
have on the tour, and how many people show up for the tour. Thursday
is after Rush is over, so we're hoping to get a lot of freshman.

Thanks,

Could you tell me a little more about the seminar, so that I
understand how it affects the tour? Will it be held in the lab
itself, so that the tours will have to be quiet in there? Are some
times in the 7-10 range more convenient than others?

I was envisioning a situation where a tour would be given a quick
explanation of what 6.001 is, why it's a good class to take, what
Scheme is, how HP donated the equipment, what the policy is for using
the room, the advantages of doing the problem sets there, etc, and
show them some fractals from the fractal problem set. If a member of
the Scheme Team or 6.001 staff wants to do this, that would be great,
otherwise I can probably get a SIPB member to do this (once they've
gotten the relevant info from Ziggy).

If the seminar is in the room, this will have to be explained outside.
We'll need to work out details for getting access to the room.

Thanks for letting us come by. I think it'll make a good tour stop.

The ``seminar'' will work mostly as an informal workshop. Probably the first
15 or so minutes will be a quick overview of the new machines and their
software setup and the rest of the time will be folks getting climatized on
the new machines by doing problem set 1.

It would probably be best, therefore, if the tour drops in between 8 and 9
since by then we should have a room full of fairly knowledgable people with
screens full of nifty graphics.

There is no longer a fractal problem set. In its place there is a problem set
that deals with scanned GIF pictures and manipulates them with the Escher
picture language.

The codes on the lab doors will change around the 8th or 9th but until then,
they are not really necessary since we will be in the lab when the tour drops
by. for your personal reference anyway, the codes are: outside-26484 and
inside-84681.

Needless to say, please dont randomly give these codes out... we are very busy
getting everything together for the course so we dont like random folks popping
in unexpectedly expecting us to show them how to hack on the new machines.

Hello Stan,

Randy Sargent forwarded your earlier message to me. If it's not too
late, I'd like to make available to the tour group(s) the LEGO/Logo
Lab at the Media Laboratory.

Details: an ideal group for our lab would be 10 to 12 persons with a
duration of 20 to 30 minutes. Location: We're room 301 on the third
floor of the Media Lab.

Please get in touch with me and let me know how the schedule is going
to look (e.g., number of group over the Thursday eve I should expect).
Thanks.

No, it's not too late; response hasn't been overwhelming, particularly from
the AI lab...

The number of groups/sizes will depend on how many people show up for the
tour on Thursday. It's hard to gauge this in advance. We typically get around
50 people, which we split up into 3 major groups, which will then get split
up into smaller groups when we hit the Media-Lab.

So my guess is that you'll get 6 groups of 10 people each, over the period of
7:10 to 10:00pm on Thursday.

If AI doesn't come through, the tours will probably not go as late, and we'll
have a little more time at each stop.

The first group that comes by will have more information.

Thanks for doing this!

(smith@im.lcs.mit.edu) is willing to give some demos Thursday night
(as I mentioned, I'll be out of town). Let me know as soon as
possible if you'd still like us to do this.

	Norm

PS: we'd use the basement conference room we've used before, so the
sizes of groups you've run through before would be fine.

Stan -

OK, I'll do it. I can't guarantee a live robot demo (who knows, it might
happen anyway) but we have videotape.

We have a fairly large area, group size isn't really a problem. 15 or 20
minutes is a decent amount of time. What time(s) will people arrive?

Robert Ringrose referred me to you about this...

Would you be interested in demoing the Leg Lab? Or know somebody
who would? This would involve staying around Thursday night, giving a
demo to the groups, and answering questions.

If so, what's an ideal group size for your area? How long is the
ideal demo? The final arrangements will depend on how many stops we
have on the tour, and how many people show up for the tour. Thursday
is after Rush is over, so we're hoping to get a lot of freshman.

Thanks,

	-stan

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply......
I hope, by now that you have skipped over my lab.
Thursday is not a good time for me, and no one else has really been
in the lab, making it difficult to find a substitute.
Also, just for reference, we don't do demo's - safety, complexity, etc.

SIPB tours are tomorrow, Thursday at 6:45pm, starting from Lobby 10.
Bring your friends! Wow the freshmen!

We'll need shepherds and sheepdogs to show up a couple minutes before
(6:40pm). Depending on the number of freshmen, we'll probably split
up into 3 main groups that will visit the stops in turn (Media-lab,
AI/LCS, other). These groups may split into smaller groups when they
hit a building.

Here are the tour stops:

    Media-lab:
	Garden Jon Orwant
        LEGO/Logo Fred Martin
	VLW Klee

    AI/LCS:
	Leg Lab Robert Ringrose
	CAM group Mark Smith

    Other:
	Fishbowl Chad Brown
	SIPB Derek Atkins (Chair...)
        ECF Kevin Iga
        Scheme Lab David LaMacchia

Food and drink and talk by Jeff Schiller when the tour is over,
~10:00pm. We may get done with early, depending on long the Media-Lab
stops are.

I'll have some sheets to give out to the tour guides tomorrow (listing
stops and room numbers).

Stan,

Well, I talked to Hal (did you talk to Hal directly because Ziggy didn't)
and he seemed to think the tour idea was ok. Remember, of course, the
only way people will use these machines is if they're taking 6.001. Yeah,
if you want to knock on the door tomorrow night that's fine. I'll have some
stuff brought up that either I'll show them the kinds of things going on
in 6.001 fall term or let them play around....

Hey, I overlooked your message in the rush of last week. If you still
want to, tell me when you want people to come through and I'll help.
It will just be walking down the corridor and talking about the

I can probably talk to about 20-30 at once.

Sorry about the delay, let me know....

Stan,

Let me see if I have everything right.

SIPB tour:

Today, Thursday, Sept. 10, from 7 to 10PM.
There will be three groups of people, each split in half giving a total of six
    groups.

On my end:

The room number is 018, and I think it will hold about 25 people, more if
standing (I will have a better count later this afternoon).
I will plan on being there starting at 7 and running until whenever.
I expect to give an approximately 20 minute demo to each of the six groups.

Does this sound like a good plan?
Also, what is the composition of the audience and what would they like to see?

Stan,

Hi. I have been swamped with orientation activities for our new AI
Lab grad students. I would be happy to do a SIPB tour of the mobot
lab tonight (probably 3 times, if you're doing it the way it's been
done before). I can meet students on the ninth floor of NE43 in the
elevator lobby, and show them around as much or as little as you like.

I'll need a bit of warning if you want me to do it, so please return
this email before 5pm or call me at 253-8829 to set up the details.
Let me know what times groups will be arriving, about how many to
expect, and about how long I should talk to them. If you give me the
go-ahead, I'll ready demos of some robots and videotapes of other
robots.

Again, I'm sorry to get back to you so late.

here's the food report.

there appeared to be about 3 dozen tourers plus half a dozen sipb types
when the tour started. assuming that other sipb types would attend just
jis's talk, that pushed the prospective audience to maybe 50. 40-50 people
showed up at 6-120 -- i didn't count them, sorry. as expected, there was
some attrition of tourers.

3 boxes entenmanns choc. chip -- all gone
3 pkgs. sandwich cookies -- 2 pkgs. eaten
2 boxes other cookies -- only nibbled at

2 bags m&ms (plain) -- approx. 1 bag eaten

3 bags cheese popcorn -- 1 bag eaten
2 bags pretzels -- 1/2 bag eaten

8 6-oz. bags potato chips -- approx. 3 bags eaten
3 cans dip -- 2 cans each half eaten
4 bags tortilla chips -- 2 bags eaten
2 jars salsa -- 1 jar half eaten

3 jars juice -- all drunk
3 bottles coke -- 2 1/2 bottles drunk
5 bottles other soda (1 diet) -- all partially drunk

not everything noted as eaten was -fully- consumed; some bags were
partially eaten.

cost $72 at laverde's. shopped at laverde's because bill didn't arrive in
time to go elsewhere. elsewhere it would probably have cost somewhat less.

for the future, for same attendance, i would recommend:

3 bottles coke
3 bottles other soda -- including 1 diet
3 bottles juice

1 bag popcorn
1 bag pretzels
18-20 oz. potato chips
1-2 cans of dip -- if 2, get different kinds
1-2 bags tortilla chips
1 jar salsa

3 boxes entenmanns choc. chip
3 pkgs other cookies -- probably some sandwich, some not

----------

save this somewhere useful. in fact, it would be damn helpful for next
year's turkey if you would write a brief report on how this year went and
how to do it right, and put said report somewhere that next year's turkey
would be likely to find it.

you might want to talk to alan bawden -- alan@ascent.com -- about tour
scheduling and such; he probably remembers how it used to work better than
i do.

The SIPB will be holding its annual computer tours tomorrow, September 10th,
starting in Lobby 10 at 6:45pm. These tours will visit
interesting computer facilities around the MIT campus, such as the
Media Lab, LCS and AI, ECF, Scheme Lab, and Athena. There will be a
talk and refreshments afterwards in 6-120 around 10pm by Jeff Schiller,
Manager of the Campus Network.

Although targetted for freshmen, these tours give you an opportunity to
see what's going on at the other labs on campus.
