Alpine
Alpine is a fast, easy to use text-based email client. It is the
successor to Pine (which is encumbered by trademark and license
restrictions and has been unmaintained since 2006); it is being
developed by the same team at UW, and is upwards-compatible. It also
includes new features, such as correct handling of multiple character
sets.
Alpine additionally comes with a simple text editor, pico, and a
simple file system browser, pilot. In order to use these programs
instead of the ones provided with Athena Pine, or to use Alpine as the
`pine` command, run add -f alpine.
This installation includes patches ported from Athena Pine to
integrate it with the obsolete Kerberos IV authentication required by
MIT’s PO servers. Alpine will use the system pine.conf and your
existing ~/.pinerc file (it should not disturb your Pine configuration
if you switch back and forth, but make backups if you are worried).
