Final Exam

FINAL EXAM:

1) It will be closed-book and closed-notes. However, you will be allowed to bring four cheat sheets with whatever information you wish on either side of the sheets.  Do not bother to copy any tables, because we shall provide you with any that you might need.

2) Do not forget to bring an appropriate number of pens, sharpened pencils and an eraser, a compass (should there be a Mohr circle), and of course, a calculator. However, no communication devices or laptops (even if used as calculators) will be allowed.

3) The exam will be comprehensive, and will include questions from Materials, Structural Mechanics and Soil Mechanics.

Lab 8

It seems that all the groups recorded the depth at start of shear using the spacer block and failed to note so. Therefore, in order to obtain reasonable values for void ratio you should factor in the width of the block (0.5 inch).

Hi,

The second group in the Tuesday session forgot to record the depth at start of shear for the dense sand at applied load of 20kg. Instead, they reported the depth of the empty box. However, you can still produce most of the required plots and will only miss one point in the friction angle vs relative density plot.

As for the other test performed by this group (loose at applied load of 10kg), the depth at start of shear is actually recorded in the depth at end of shear space (in inches) so you can calculate the volume.

In order to find the friction angle based on bearing capacity factors you should use the chart on page 28 of Notes 3 from the soils lecture notes.
