TA: Ashley Swanson
Lecture:

Recitation: F 10 - 11 a.m.

Course Description:
14.20 analyzes the
acquisition and use of market power by firms, strategic
interactions among firms, and the role of government competition
policy. We will approach this subject
from both theoretical and applied perspectives; in addition to
assigned course readings, regular reading of the Wall Street
Journal, New York Times, or Economist is strongly encouraged.
This
class is high-participation. Class attendance and
participation in discussions of application readings is
required. Student teams are responsible for managing entry,
capacity, and pricing decisions of their "firm"as part
of semester-long Competitive Strategy Game. Problem
sets and exams round out course requirements.

Recitation 2
Recitation 2 notes are now online. Those of you who picked up the handouts in recitation today may want to reprint them from Stellar, as some of the graph lines in the figures didn't copy well this morning.

Discussion Questions for Monday
I've gotten a few questions about this, so I thought I'd send out a clarification. There are two sets of questions at the back of the lecture notes from Wednesday, which are posted in the "lecture1_handouts.pdf" file in the materials section of Stellar. One set pertains to the steel mills article we discussed Wednesday; one set pertains to the Mexican cement market.

Lecture 1- Complete set of handouts on Stellar site
As noted in class, lecture slides generally will be available only in hard copy in-class or outside my office. For the first lecture, given the volume of material, I have posted the full set of handouts (syllabus, assignments, and lecture notes) on the Stellar site. --Prof. Rose

Enrollment, Extra Handouts, Recitation
If you are intending to take 14.20 this semester and do NOT yet have access to the materials on Stellar, please e-mail Professor Rose (nrose@mit.edu) or myself (aswan@mit.edu) as soon as possible so that we have you on our list and make a nametag for you. Also, please fill out the information sheet in the materials section as soon as possible so that we can set up the CSG teams. If you were not in class today but are intending to take the class, there are extra handouts outside Professor Rose's office (E52-280B).
This week in recitation (10am Friday in E51-085), we will be going over material that will be useful to you for the first Problem Set, which is not due until September 24 but is fairly long. I will be discussing demand regression, present discounted value, and the use of formulas in Excel, as well as answering any questions you might have about the first lecture. I understand that this is a holiday weekend, so many of you may not be able to attend - please send me an e-mail if this is the case. I will post the handout from each recitation on Stellar, but if there is demand (please indicate in your e-mail) for a make-up recitation in addition to my regular office hours, then we will try to set something up.
Cheers!
