Inessential Internet part II- the Web
Cool... you found your way to this page!!
Welcome to the World Wide Web, or actually the Web, as it is more commonly refered to. The Web represents the future of the Internet (or the visible future, until someone actually come up with something better.) With the Web, one can:
- Access documents at sites across the world on everything from art to zoology, and everything in between
- Retreive programs for your personal use
- Look at cool and splufty images like this (yes! click your mouse on the blue words!!) one.
Okay enough about what you can do and on to how to do it. Anything in blue can be clicked on and will send you somewhere (Hah! Clicked didn't you?). They're called links. Words that were blue and are now purple are links that you've already clicked on (This makes it a lot easier to keep track or where you've been, until you've used the web so much that you stop looking for purple links and start looking for blue links that signify where you haven't been.
Cool starting points
The Web has a lot of good starting points for people that are just getting on to it. A word though, before you go rambling off into the oblivion that awaits...... One, the Web is addictive. Even to you non-computer "wwenies" out there, the Web is still quite addictive, partially because it so huge and has something for everything, and partially because it's so easy to use (Can we say a generation of computer potatoes? Let your mouse be your remote control)
- The MIT SIPB Home page is a good place to look at what's around at MIT and get a feel for homepages and moving around on the Web. (No, I'm not going to degrade myself and use the terms surfing or information superhighway)
- Matthew Gray's List of Cool Stuff on the Web . It's kinda old, but it still has a lot of good stuff on it.
- Jake Harris's homepage is one of my favorite places for random stuff on the Web. (Jake is also the illustrator of Matthew and Jake's adventures).
- Planet Earth Home Page In my opinion this is the best starting point on the Web
- GNN the Gloabal Network Navigator.. They are always reformatting their page with cool stuff. (Anyone can enjoy this page)
