Welcome to Layered Athena. This program is just a friendly front end for the layer_athena program, which is run as a subprocess to actually get anything done. Please fill in the owner and location fields by first moving the mouse cursor into the box (emacs-style editing commands apply). The owner should be the email address Information Systems may contact about this workstation, and the location should be the physical location of the workstation. Next choose which subsets (groups of progams) you want to use. We suggest using one of the three buttons labeled with Minimal, Standard, and Local Config(uration) to choose common groupings. You may also click on the box following the subset name to individually change subsets. Clicking on the question mark at the end of the line will display a short description of that subset. When you have all of this set the way you want it, click on "do it" at the top. After confirming your choice, the workstation will update which will take several minutes. Following this, you should reboot the workstation for all new services to take effect. ADDITIONAL FEATURES You may configure one workstation like another by using the load and save buttons in the file menu. The "save extra copy" choice on the options menu will tell this workstation to always keep a copy of its configuration somewhere else, such as in a central repository. Normally whenever you change the configuration of a Layered Athena workstation, Information Systems will be notified. You may turn this off with the "register workstation" command in the options menu. We normally also allow network monitoring of the current configuration of each workstation, which may be turned off with the "allow monitoring" command. The "autoupdate" command in the options menu controls whether this workstation will automatically update to new Athena software when it is available, or if manual action will be required. If you do not allow the workstation to update automatically, email will be sent to the Owner informing them of the waiting update. The customize workstation option allows you to specify a script that is run at update time to install local changes that you require. For additional information, please contact the Athena Consulting staff in 11-115, by calling 253-4435, or by running olc.
