Sending mail without invoking rmail
From emacs it is possible to send mail without invoking rmail.
This is done by typing C-x m or C-x 4 m
( C-x 4 m puts you in two-window mode as well as starting
outgoing mail; if you happen to already be in two window mode
C-x 4 m will use the window you are not currently in to
compose the mail message). Again mail is sent using C-c C-c.
