I am applying for the preschool/kindergarten position advertised in
the March 25 @i[Boston Sunday Globe.]

I began studying and working in education over 20 years ago, getting
my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and my graduate
degree in management, first working with special needs children and
later with 2-6 year olds. I have run my own classrooms and acted as
head teacher, supervising student teachers and teacher aids, managing
teams of educators and therapists, coordinating programs and
communicating with parents of students. While working at the Child
Care Circuit, I have developed curriculum materials for preschool
programs. Currently I am working as a substitute teacher in Middleton
and the Hamilton-Wenham district and as a volunteer in kindergarten
classes in West Concord, Lexington and Hamilton-Wenham.

I believe my experience and training have given me an awareness of
children's developmental and individual needs as well as the skills
necessary for managing a classroom, implementing a curriculum and
talking with parents.

My current areas of interest are developmentally oriented elementary
curriculum and the effects of classroom design and organization on
children's learning. I have had training in the "Math Their Way"
elementary math curriculum and have become familiar with the "Whole
Language" approach to teaching reading and writing skills and will be
attending a week-long "Whole Language" institute at Lesley College
this summer. I am enthusiastic about both of these curriculum
programs. As part of my master's program, I wrote a research paper on
the importance of classroom design to children's learning. I believe
that classroom design is a largely untapped opportunity to facilitate
children's education.

I look forward eagerly to applying my ideas on developmental curriculum
and classroom design to a classroom of my own.
