Star/Biochem
Software Tools for Academics and Researchers (STAR) focuses on two obstacles to using research tools in teaching:
- Lengthy process of teaching command-line tools.
- Removing interface complexity to render tools more accessible to undergraduates and high school students.
STAR addresses these concerns with: Star Biochem for protein visualization; StarBiogene for analysis of gene expression; StarHydro for distributed hydrologic watershed analysis; and StarHPC for high-performance computing.
Biology at the molecular level is carried out by entities with 3-D structures. When you look at a static, 2-D representation of a protein, it's hard to get a sense of what it's like and what its properties are.
