Xloadimage version 4.1 is now available by anonymous ftp from
export.lcs.mit.edu in /contrib/xloadimage.4.1.tar.Z.

This is a minor bug-fix release but contains improvements that can
dramatically improve performance when viewing JPEG images.

Version 4.1 contains the following enhancements over version 4.0:

* Numerous ANSI-C compilation problems are corrected.
* Improved automatic configuration for some systems (eg HP, SGI).
* The JPEG library is now compiled with optimization.
* Includes version 4A of the IJG JPEG code.
* A few minor bug-fixes.

The following image types are supported:

Type Name Can Dump Description
---------- -------- -----------
niff Yes Native Image File Format (NIFF)
sunraster No Sun Rasterfile
gif No GIF Image
jpeg Yes JFIF-style JPEG Image
tiff Yes TIFF image
fbm No FBM Image
cmuraster No CMU WM Raster
pbm Yes Portable Bit Map (PBM, PGM, PPM)
faces No Faces Project
rle No Utah RLE Image
xwd No X Window Dump
vff No Sun Visualization File Format
mcidas No McIDAS areafile
vicar No VICAR Image
pcx No PC Paintbrush Image
gem No GEM Bit Image
macpaint No MacPaint Image
xpm No X Pixmap
xbm No X Bitmap

Due to the inclusion of the IJG V4 JPEG and V3 TIFF libraries,
the xloadimage v4.0 distribution is significantly larger than previous
versions. I can no longer email copies to people, unfortunately.

I am willing to distribute copies of the source on 1.44Mb floppy disk
(or other media if supplied by the requestor) for a small charge, and
can produce precompiled binaries for many common systems as well. If
you're interested send email to me at jimf@centerline.com for more
information.

WHAT IS XLOADIMAGE?

Xloadimage is a UNIX+X11 image display utility which can recognize
many different common, and some uncommon, image types --
automatically. It supports all X11 displays, automatically processing
images for display on low-end servers if necessary. It compiles
out-of-the-box on almost all UNIX systems with little user
intervention. It allows slideshow viewing, can place images on the
root window of servers, and can even handle image input from a pipe.
A number of common image processing functions are available for
fine-tuning images.

Enjoy,
