Hi!

I know that some of you may be confused as to why you are receiving this
message. The following is a list of information that Esther and I
compiled to help the next Rush Chairs. The reason why I am forwarding
it to you is that I do not want any of it to be lost. Two years
ago...it was either Manu or Manish who had a complete list of everything
they did for Rush 1992, but they lost it. I am sending this out to all
the entry chairs and relevant house officers to make sure that this
information will be passed on to future Rush Chairs. It would be nice
if someone were to take the responsibility to place this info in the
MacGregor Locker, or make sure that it remains in a prominent location
in the MacGregor Archives.

Good Luck next Rush! =)

Anthony D. Patire

PS: Did you ever find a third Rush Chair?

-------------------------------------------------

Esther's Notes:

The following is based on the 1994 MacGregor Rush Schedule which
included seven BBQ's, a donut breakfast, a waffle breakfast, tower drop,
snocones, and dunking booth. Rush chairs should carry out a thorough
inventory of the student office for reusable and leftover supplies. I
suggest BJ's or another bulk grocery warehouse for supplies. K-mart is
also a good resource. Some items, such as buns and meat can be ordered
through the manager of the convenience store. This resource is a good
money-saver.

DO NOT BUY:
un-rippled potato chips
pancake mix that requires eggs
pretzals (at least in large amounts)
tortilla chips (unless you buy salsa)

What to Buy for Rush:

Things you will need: (that Mac should have)

3 Igloo Drink Coolers
3 Burger Spatulas
3 Tongs
3 2-Prong Forks
1 Large Wooden Spoon
1 Grill Scraper
3 Cooks Aprons
3 Waffle Makers
4 Industrial Strength Extension Cords
6 Household Extension Cords
Candy Jar (for clearinghouse)
2 Large Mixing Bowls
2 Small Mixing Bowls
1 pitcher (for pouring batter)
1 30 cup Coffee Maker
1 Set Tour Keys
12 Tennis Balls
100 feet of hose

1 large cart to tote BBQ stuffs
1 sharp knife to cut bagels, cheese, etc.
1 large cooler full of ice for snocones
same cooler of ice for BBQ drinks

Five Tips for a Successful Rush:

1. Foreward and Forearmed: To be prepared is half the victory.
Prepare as much as possible in advance. Have drinks mixed
and chilling hours before the BBQ. Have meats, cheese and buns
rationed prior to Rush (allowing more for Tower Drop night).
Prepare your fires half an hour in advance. Prepare your tour
guides. Mix pancake mix the night before. You get the idea.
Also, allow four hours to get everything to the roof for tower
        drop.

2. Cleanliness is Godliness.
Keep the BBQ area clean and neat. Make sure the garbage cans
are emptied frequently. Keep the kitchen clean. Wash all utensils
after each BBQ. Sanitariness makes for a better BBQ. Every time you
see trash, pick it up (or no one else will). Keep the food areas (chips
and buns area) separate from the condiments area. Condiments tend to be
messy, and messiness takes the appetite away.

3. KISS: Keep it simple, stupid.
Try and simplify your menu to include just the basics. Adding
too many details (sliced strawberries, chicken wings, chili) can be
a strain on time, organization, and money. Use the same setup each
time you have a BBQ to make it easier on your workers. Try not to
have many foods that require utensils. Try not to buy food that needs
excess preparations.

4. Everything in Excess!
It is better to have too much than not enough. Buy excess of
non-perishable items (especially paper and plasic goods) because they
can be used by Mac Social and Mac Rush in the future. Tower Drop should
throw tons of everything. One can of Spam is funny, but 50
cans of Spam is HILARIOUS. 10 watermelons is quite a show, but 30 in a
row and MacGregor makes the Boston Herald. Tower Drop is our
night to shine, make it memorable.

5. Leave it Better than you Found It.
After rush is through, have a sizable cleanup crew. Make sure
everything is clean and accounted for and excess food items are
given away. Organize the student office in a neat manner so
that the social chair can inventory for needed supplies for the
fall. Document everything. If this helped you, something you
write will certainly help someone else.

Quick Tips to Avoid Problems:

1. Don't plug all the waffle irons into the same circuit.
2. Turn off sprinklers in the morning.
3. Make sure desk has a copy of MedComm Rush Rules.
4. Put extra tables in the BBQ pits (other than those in courtyard).
5. Delagate authority and power.
6. Have a big car handy.
7. KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS.
8. Taste test all your drink mixes.
9. Always be resupplying your cooks and food tables.
10. Have fun and relax, Rush doesn't have to be a problem set.

Anthony's Notes:

The following is a very rough sketch of a few things that I think are
important about Rush. It is somewhat of a cross between a case study of
1994 and a list of improvements.

****Please note, that strictly speaking, it is against rush rules for a
dorm to have any activities until 24 hours after Rush beings.
Fraternities and ILG's have first crack. Dorms get much more attention
from Frosh on Sunday than they do on Saturday. We had to call ahead and
make sure it was okay to have events before 6:30pm Saturday. There are
a lot of subtleties. Make sure you read the MedComm rules thoroughly,
and understand them.

****Details

*Things to be done during or before the summer:

1) MacGregor advertisement in freshman handbook.
2) Reserve important items from American Rental (dunking booth).
3) Daily Confusion: It is really important to post your events here so
that freshman will know about them. In 1994, this had to be arranged by
August 19.
4) There will be a meeting of all the Dormitory Rush Chairmen to review
the Rush rules applicable to that year. It is very important to attend
this meeting.

*Rush Worker Signup

The purpose of this event is to allocate your workers to do specific
duties at the appropriate times. Recommendations:

 Clearinghouse/Rush Desk
  One hour shifts
Two people working desk from 8am to 2am

 Tours
  One hour shifts
Two people working most of the time (8am to 2am)
However, 8am-10am is very light, BBQ times tend
to be heavier. Be prepared to have about 4 or more tour guides
during the peak hours...especially before and immediately
  after the Tower Drop.

 BBQ's
Three hour shifts (this includes setup and cleanup)
  Three cooks
Two facillitators to make sure that the cooks don't run
out of hamburgers, buns, cheese, and other stuff.

 Fishermen
This is great during the time when many clueless frosh are flooding
the campus before the president's convocation. Many of them do not know
where MacGregor house is, and require assistance in moving their stuff.
This is a great chance for workers to meet freshman. You will need to
allocate carts or dollys so that rush workers can form a caravan to and
from the R/O center. This is a strenuous job, but important. Two h
