I replaced the DVD-ROM in banana-sr (the mac) with a CDRW that we had
lying around the office. It seems to work. The broken DVD-ROM is
sitting on top of the machine. Unless people tell me otherwise, I will
get rid of it after next weeks meeting.

The machine was verified (by keithw) to be outside the Apple warranty.
