Subject: Minutes of the Guild meeting

--------

Minutes of the April 21, 2002, Meeting of the
		MIT Assassins' Guild

Quorum is found to have been met at 1405, but the Grandmaster declares
that the meeting will begin according to Assassin Standard Time: 1415.

At 1415, the meeting is called to order.

*****

First on the agenda is Officer Reports:

Grandmaster(Jake Beal): The Guild's not dead. In my opinion, we're
doing better than we were this time last year. Now, we just need more
10-days to actually run...

Vice(Tom Giordano): [Read by the Grandmaster, as the Vicemaster is not
present] The Vicemaster assures the populace of the Guild that his lack
of presence at the Guild meeting is entirely coincidental, and has
nothing to do with the fact that his investigations into the shady
dealings of the Grandmaster discovered ties with the Italian mafia. The
Vicemaster also reaffirms his unswerving obedience to the Grandmaster in
all things.

Sec'ty of the Exchequer(Philip Tan): First off, there's this abacus
that's been sitting around the Guild office for a while, and I'm
claiming it as the symbol of my office. In other news, we have cash!
We're no longer in the black! ...er, I mean, in the red! Black's a bad
color... yeah, that's it. We've also got money we need to spend by the
end of term, so if you've got ideas, let me know.

Scribe(J Muchnij): Things have been fairly uneventful. Email from
nutcases is down this year, which is a shame...

Sgt@Arms(Uriel Klieger): We have a bulletin board. We've kept it
because we run the ASA. The office has stayed relatively clean. Patrol
is still running... now with Columns! ...and, of course, Monty has
completely changed the game with those guns of his.

*****

At 1422, the Grandmaster calls a pizza break, though little pizza
survived the pre-meeting consumption.

The meeting resumes at 1426

*****

The Grandmaster moves the poll on letterbombing ahead of elections:

> Nonbinding vote on the question: Should the guild send letter bombs to
> the freshman class this year?
>
> 1 - Hell No.
> 2 - Nah, I guess not.
> 3 - I don't know, I don't care, I'm ambivalent, look, pizza.
> 4 - Sure, I guess so.
> 5 - Hell Yes.

First, a round of comments was taken:
Courtney, who proposed the poll, stated that 9/11 has made lots of
people stupid, and we'd be dumb to give the stupid people a reason to
flip out over us. Jamie concurs, pointing out that it only takes one
parent opening the letterbomb and complaining to MIT to produce
smackdown. Philip comments that the stupid people would have to be
awfully stupid, considering that the envelope will be in a big package
of mailings from MIT. Uriel points out that he found the letterbombs to
be really cool. Ken comments that while the proper response to "Is this
a bad idea?" is "Fuck the cowards" it may not actually be the best
recruitment method available to us. Charles, putting on his lawyer hat,
says "Don't take risks", but speaking as Charles he doubts that we'll
actually have any trouble based on the letterbombs.

Then the vote is taken:

"Hell No" -- 3
"Nah, I guess not" -- 5
"I don't know, I don't care, I'm ambivalent, look, pizza" -- 5
"Sure, I guess so" -- 8
"Hell Yes" -- 3

Elections:

***
Grandmaster, for which the candidates were:
Uriel Klieger: You know me. The Guild is my life and now I'll run it!
Jake Beal: You know me. I've loved and hated being Grandmaster, and
I'll gladly serve again. I want more 10-days, and I want it to be
     harder to meet quorum.
Beth Baniszewski: I'm going to be a sophomore, so I'm full of youthful
enthusiasm! The Guild is cool, and I like being an officer because
it means that I can punt my tooling for something actually useful.
Uriel wins.
***
Vicemaster, for which the candidates were:
Courtney Shiley: I'm old, I have a job, and I care about the Guild. I'm
moderately enthused, but the High Council should be young. On the
other hand, I am good at whipping people into doing things.
Aaron Finck: I'll be a sophomore. I like to think that I'm steadily,
stably, enthusiastic. I will be here over the summer. I'm
     interested in investigating non-Guild LARPing.
Jen Chung: I should graduate in June and then have a full-time job.
I've been on the High Council before and am surprisingly psyched to
     be Vicemaster.
Stephanie Fried: I'm going to be a senior, and should be graduating on
time. I'm psyched to be more involved with the Guild. As for
     hosedness, I've got a 40-hour/wk UROP and I'm writing a game.
Jen wins.
***
Scribe, for which the candidates were:
Clint Lohse: I'm going to be a sophomore. I can use Athena and I'm
literate, so I figure I'm qualified.
Susan Born: I've graduated and have a day job. I can use Framemaker,
which I figure makes me ludicrously overqualified for this job.
J Muchnij: I'm old. I've been on 5 of the past 6 High Councils, and
like it there. I figure Scribe is the post for me, and think I do
     a reasonable job at it.
Aaron Finck: I can use Athena. I learned Template in one night. I
     figure I can handle Scribe.
Clint wins.
***
Secretary of the Exchequer, for which the candidates were:
Philip Tan: I've been Sec'ty for a year now. I've also run the entire
funding apparatus for student groups at MIT, and everyone who runs
it now comes to me for advice anyways, so I can do anything I
want. I'll be here for one last year then I'll become a government
     beaurocrat back home.
Aaron Finck: You should vote for Philip.
Stephanie Fried: I wanted to be Sec'ty last year, and I've wanted to be
on the High Council since summer before my freshman year. I've
been treasurer for other student groups.
Philip wins.
***
Sgt@Arms, for which the candidates were:
Diane Christoforo: I'm quite bouncy, and unfortunately not very good
at this whole violence thing. You should elect Aaron.
Aaron Finck: There's an alternative to violence?
Beth Baniszewski: Violence! Whee!
Stephanie Fried: I can keep the office clean and want to update the
bulletin board more often.... and really, I like violence.
J Muchnij: I'm old. Despite usually not needing weapons, I do have
quite a stash. But really, Vote Young.
mikka: I want the office to stay clean, dammit! I want to keep my key
to the office (erm, combo), and keep it clean!
Aaron wins.

Reacting to the dearth of master nominations recently, the High Council
calls for any nominations that GMs present want to make (to be voted on
at the next meeting). Philip, for the PSI GMs, nominates Jim Waldrop
for mastership.

The meeting is adjourned.
