Hello...

Emacs is an editor you can use to write your java source file. You
can find information about using emacs on Athena at
  <http://web.mit.edu/olh/Emacs>

Once you have written and saved your java source file, you need to
compile it. On athena, the java compiler is in the java locker. You
will need to run the command
  add java
every time you log in. One way to do this is to put that command in
your .environment file.

You compile a java source file into a class file using the java
compiler, javac. If your java source file is named test.java, then
the command to compile it would be
  javac test.java
This will produce a class file named test.class.

To run a java program after compiling it, you need to run the java
interpreter on the class file.
  java test.class
