To manipulate the windows on your screen, you need to have a "window manager" running on your workstation. Normally, the window manager is started automatically when you login. If, for some reason, the window manager operations described below don't seem to be working, you should type this command to start the window manager: uwm & After a few moments, uwm will be activated, and you will be able to move the windows around, resize them, and change how the windows are "stacked" on the screen. When performing window manager operations, you need to press and hold the "Meta" key on your keyboard while using the mouse. The "Meta" key may be labeled "Compose Character", "Symbol", or "Alt" on your particular keyboard. Depending on the operation you want to perform, you will need to either click a single button on the mouse or move the mouse while holding down a button. This table summarizes the operations you can perform: Click button Hold button and move mouse Left Button "push" window behind others iconify window Middle Button un-iconify window change size of window Right Button "pop" window to front move window Note: If your workstation's mouse only has two buttons, pressing both buttons simultaneously has the same effect as pressing the middle button. The "push" and "pop" operations control how your windows are "stacked" on the screen. The iconify and un-iconify operations allow you to "compress" windows into small icons and then "expand" them again. To change the size of the window, position the mouse cursor near the corner or edge of the window you want to change. Then press the "Meta" key and the middle mouse button. Stretch the outline of the window to the desired size, and release the button. To move a window, position the mouse cursor within the window and press the "Meta" key and the right mouse button. Move the outline of the window to the desired location, and release the button. If you want to learn more about the window manager, you can read the manual page by using the 'man' command: man uwm
