For what it's worth, I'll also be involved in the performance, one of
three trombonists accompanying the Requiem..

LEAD STORIES

* In January, the New Yorker magazine reported the latest trendy
body ornamentation in the city: small jewelry charms inserted
under the skin, producing boil-like bulges in the shapes of the
charms. The "subcutaneous jewelry" can be inserted in the
forehead, the back of the hand, or any other place in which the skin
can be pinched.

* Through what a company spokesman later called "human error,"
the front door of the CoreStates Bank in Robesonia, Pa. (10 miles
from Reading), remained unlocked through the Veterans Day
weekend, and no one knew until a customer, who had forgotten it
was a holiday, innocently walked in at 9 a.m. Monday, setting off a
silent alarm that alerted the police. The customer said his first
thought on seeing the bank empty was that robbers had locked the
tellers and customers in the vault.

* The Wise Judiciary: In December, a Bloomfield, Iowa, judge
sentenced two men, who had clubbed 23 cats with baseball bats
(killing 16), to 1 day in jail per cat, but then he suspended even that
sentence. Also in December, a judge in Leeuwarden, Netherlands,
sentenced the men who beat a man to death on the eve of his
wedding to 16 months each in prison. (In reaction, a Dutch inmate
serving eight years in a stomping death asked Queen Beatrix for a
pardon, claiming his own sentence was thus way too severe.) And
in January, a judge in Mexico City freed confessed killer-bandit
Alonso Gonzalez, calling him "a modern Robin Hood, who not
only shares what he earns from robberies, but gives his companions
more money [than he keeps]."

POLICE BLOTTER

* In September, a federal judge in West Palm Beach, Fla.,
dismissed the disability lawsuit filed by police Lt. Ed Wagner
against the department, ruling that Wagner was not really penalized
for having the disability in that he was merely denied a special
assignment. Wagner was removed from the SWAT team for
having a sensitive neck, a condition which came to light when he
complained that an old neck injury flared up after a colleague got
him in a headlock and gave him "noogies."

* Hours before the December 5th inaugural address of Mexico
City's new mayor, which was expected to announce stern measures
to deal with rampant crime and police corruption, the mayor's top
assistant was mugged in a taxicab, giving up his wallet and
briefcase, which contained the mayor's speech. And in June, an
armed robber took the purse of the executive director of
Crimestoppers of New Orleans outside her office.

* Recent Dangerous Weapons: roast beef sandwich (pedestrian,
angry at a motorist, Matteson, Ill., November); burrito (motorist,
angry at another, Longview, Ore., September); carrot (reaction to
spouse's demand for divorce, East Hanover, N.J., August); Etch-A-
Sketch toy (two teenage boys, overpowering a jailer and escaping,
Clinton, Tenn., November); cordless drill (mother hit stepdaughter
because her dog was barking too loud, and the daughter struck
back with a "fish whacker" tool, Wasilla, Alaska, August).

* In October, a man robbed the Capital Bank of North County in
San Diego, Calif., and escaped in a pickup truck. According to a
teller, the man never claimed to have a gun, but demonstrated his
impatience at the teller's dawdling by showing her a photograph of
another man holding a gun.

OOPS!

* In September, workers delivering crates to the Museon museum
in The Hague, Netherlands, accidentally dropped one containing a
75-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton made from bones recovered
in Montana, breaking it into 188 pieces. And in January during a
break-in at the Yammonoki Museum in Ito, Japan, a thief being
chased by a guard dropped a 600-year-old Ming Dynasty platter
worth about $400,000, shattering it.

* In November, an adviser to Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu
conceded that, due to a bureaucratic oversight, the Western Wall in
Jerusalem is not owned by the government but by an organization
called the Islamic Trust, which administers various Muslim holy
sites. After capturing Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war, Israel
apparently formally appropriated the land beside the Wall, but not
the Wall, itself.

* The November 7 edition of the Vatican newspaper Osservatore
Romano contained statements declaring that homosexuals "do have
the right" to adopt children and to live together as couples,
attributed to staunch moralist Father Gino Concetti. After several
days of panic at the Vatican, editor Gianfranco Grieco located the
problem: a computer glitch that removed only the word "not"
several times from the story.

* In October, Harwinton, Conn., local official Marie Knudsen told
the Waterbury Republican-American that the first person snared in
a radar trap she intervened with the state police to have set up was
the husband of the constituent who complained the loudest to her
about speeders ruining her neighborhood.

* In August, British mountain climber Alan Hinkes, who had
already conquered 9 of the world's 14 highest peaks, had to
postpone his ambitious quest to climb the other five in one year
when number 10 failed. He was at the base camp of the 26,600-ft.
high Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, ready to eat a piece of local bread
when the wind blew the flour topping in his face, causing him to
sneeze, which resulted in a slipped disc.

INEXPLICABLE

* The Sacramento Bee reported in November that a group of young
people from the East Valley Foursquare Church in Orangevale,
Calif., were recently observed playing what they called "Bambi
Baseball," supervised by youth minister Robin Gattis. The name
came from what was used as a bat: the frozen leg of a deer. (A
frozen cow tongue was the ball.) It was also reported that an
earlier version of the game was played by swinging a frozen trout
to hit a frozen squid.

* In 1987 a leaky tank car containing the volatile chemical
butadiene exploded in a New Orleans rail yard. No one was hurt,
but 8,000 nearby residents were evacuated and later
filed lawsuits for their injuries, which consisted of 36 hours of
displacement and a general fear of future illnesses, which have so
far not materialized. About 20 so far have won an average of
$100,000 each in compensatory damages. In addition, in
September 1997, the entire class of potential plaintiffs won a jury
trial for punitive damages against the CSX railroad and four other
companies for a total of $3.4 billion. CSX was ordered to kick in
three-fourths of the total even thought the National Transportation
Safety Board had ruled it blameless in the explosion.

* Peter Sansom began work on January 19 at his new, two-day-a-
week job with the big Marks & Spencer department store in
London. For the next six months under a government grant
program run by the Poetry Society, he will work for about $1,500
per month as the store's Poet in Residence. He said he hopes
generally to raise employees' and customers' level of awareness of
poetry. A lesser-known Poet in Residence, at London's Botanical
Gardens, said she has already had an impact on that organization,
as witnessed by her telephone message recording: "Sarah Maguire
can't get to the phone/So please leave a message after the tone."

Subject: RE: Report on maintenance committee review of Vanderweil report
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Dear all:

Last night alums and pikans met at pika for a preliminary reading of the
maintenance report prepared for us by Vanderweil Facilities Advisors.
VFA was hired by MIT to assess maintenace needs in MIT buildings as well
as FSILGs, and inspected pika last semester. I will summarize the
meeting here for those interested.

The VFA report lists approximately 40 maintenace projects suggested by
the inspector. These range in complexity and cost from minor to major,
and cover deficiencies (from the inspector's point of view) in the
categories of building safety, integrity, functionality, and appearance.
The items were each assigned a priority by the inspector ranging from 1
to 5. The total estimated costs of all repairs is $264k, while the
estimate for the priority 1 items only is $40k.

At the meeting we reviewed all priority 1-3 projects. Some of these are
items already scheduled for work this summer. Others were considered to
be good suggestions, and still others were considered ones we could
ignore or downgrade in priority.

JD Albert, as housecorp maintenance chair, is going to review the VFA
list further, as well as other items not considered by VFA, in order to
present a proposal at the next housecorp meeting regarding near-term
maintenace projects.

According to the architect who prepared it, the report is intended to be
a "living document." In other words, we are supposed to be able to
update it from year to year or month to month as we desire to reflect
current maintenance needs. The report was prepared with the aid of a
computerized database. The software is going to be made available to MIT
after April 15, and all FSILGs will have access to it. The intention is
that the database will then serve as a centralized way for groups to
keep maintenace records and estimate costs of future repairs.

It is not yet clear exactly what the interface to the database software
or the level of access to it will be like. We concluded pika should just
wait until after the software is available and then go try it out.

There was some discussion at the meeting as to whether or not the
centralized database is a good thing. Most people seemed to agree that
it could be very useful to pika as a way to improve record-keeping and
aid planning, though some were suspicious that the centralization of
records gives MIT greater control over us. This issue was not greatly
discussed, and does not seem to be particularly important as MIT has not
asked us (yet?) to do anything suggested in the report, and the
architech emphasized that we should use the report as a tool for our own
planning.

More details may be forthcoming after the next housecorp meeting.

Subject: Ash Wednesday Goof

Hello,

So I screwed up and thought Ash Wednesday was next week. It turns out
it's today. I don't know if I can deal, but does somebody want to do
the annual Ash Wednesday Tradition:

  1. Go to the video store and get Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness
  2. Watch them in a place where people can come see them with you.
  3. Have a good time.

I guess if you want to deal, pick a time and place tonight and post to
the list. Wheee.

Yours,
Jake

Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 18:19:14 EST
From: Cyrus R Eyster <cyruse@MIT.EDU>

Hi. For those who haven't heard, there's this Ash Wednesday Tradition.
According to Jake, this is what we do:

> 1. Go to the video store and get Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness
> 2. Watch them in a place where people can come see them with you.
> 3. Have a good time.

I plan to do all 3, which means you only need to do the last 2 (and no,
technically, you do not need to do anything - it's just a suggestion).
The place is E51, in one of the big third floor classrooms. The time is
7:30pm. Yeah - it's early and soon. Eit. I want to finish before everyone
swarms out to watch this new B5 episode thing. Show up any time. Bring
your friends along. It'll be grand.

(The movies are like 85 minutes each, so I'm guessing we'll start Army of
Darkness (the better of the two, IMO) at 9pm (definitely before 9:30).)

Hey everyone,

The second women's conference meeting of the year is coming up next wednesday
night. We really should be represented at this, especially since the
Sorority Rush start is scheduled in the same evening as the Residence
Midway. We should really do our best to make sure that there is time
for women students to do both of these activities and not have to choose
between them.

So that's my 3 second agenda. Think about it, we can elect someone at the
next housemeeting.

Subject: other rush stuff
Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 21:19:28 EST
From: Emily B Cooper <ebcooper@MIT.EDU>

I. Rush Mailing.

A group mailing will be sent out this year. We are allowed 4 11x17
sheets folded and saddle-stitched (this means stapled in the middle) plus
one 11x17 cover sheet. There is certainly no need to make any more hoop-la
that we usually do, but we might want to think of something that will
stick out in a big packet...like sheet metal. We will have to split the cost
of postage with the other FSILGs, but not the printing costs.

II. Greek Parents Association

or "GPA" We need to list a parent to field questions about the house during
the summer and esp. during rush. Talk it over w/ your parents and see if
they would be willing to field calls from anxious types. And then, let
me know.

III. Summer Phone calls.

In the past, FSILG's receive a list of all the incoming students and could
call them and "soft rush" a little. This year this will not be allowed.
Instead, each student will receive a card, on which they can indicate
which houses they would like more information from. We have not made summer
calls before, but I think we really should make an effort to find out
who requests more info from us, and try to contact them, not necessarily per
telephone, but at least a letter, or some cumin or something. (This entails
going to Elizabeth Cogliano's office on a regular basis to pick up names and
contact info.)

Since 1959, the Everett Moore Baker Memorial Foundation has
held true to its original charge to perpetuate the memory of its
namesake through various projects designed to fundamentally improve
MIT for both students and faculty. The elite group of students
fortunate enough to be selected for the Baker Foundation have,
among numerous other things, successfully conferred the prestigious Baker
Foundation Teaching Award upon the faculty member deemed to have
done the best job in the field of undergraduate teaching. Often, the
Baker Foundation has acted as MIT's guardian angel, helping the
Institute overcome persistent problems that occur in student-faculty
interaction.

If you'd like to help change MIT for the better, the Baker Foundation is
for you.

APPLICATIONS can be picked up in Rm. 401 in the Student Center.

** A LOOK AT PALMPC DEVELOPMENT OPTIONS **

Steve Patt <slp@stevenscreek.com> wrote the following (via Lee Leonard
<lee@tempestprod.com>):

I attended the Software Development Conference in San
Francisco today and learned the following things about
  WindowsCE development:

First, the PalmPC SDK is still in beta, but will be released
"soon." Second, although you now can develop applications
for HPC's with Visual C++, Visual Basic, or Visual J++,
ONLY Visual C++ is supported for the PalmPC. And third, there
appear to be no general tools or methods available to deal with
the differing screen sizes (even among HPCs themselves, not only
between HPC and PalmPC). Finally, the emulator (required for
development if you don't have an actual hardware unit, which of
course don't yet exist for PalmPCs) only runs under Windows NT,
not under Windows 95. On the Metrowerks front, Metrowerks claim
the next release of their software will support WindowsCE
development, but NOT compilation! In other words they will have
an Intel compiler so you can test apps on an emulator, but will
not have any cross-compilers allowing you to produce actual
applications. That's further off into the future. So Microsoft
remains the only game in that town.

I pass this information on not only because this may be of general
interest, but also because all of these things IMHO impact on the
number of PalmPC applications which will be available soon or ever,
which in turn impacts the success of that platform, which in turn
impacts the success of the PalmPilot platform which we are all
  developing for.

By the way, Microsoft had a huge (of course) booth at this
conference with a fair bit of emphasis on CE. 3Com was there
(with a booth labeled PalmPilot, I think it barely mentioned 3Com,
actually) with a minimum size booth but providing information for
developers; it was busy when I was there.

  FWIW.

** STILL WORKING ON MY THESIS **

Sorry for the delay but I am still working on my thesis. I am guessing,
giving my current accomplishments, that it will take much longer to
finish than I anticipated. Since I have been able to publish in a limited
role 'semi-efficiently', and it does not distract from my thesis work, I
will continue for the foreseeable future publishing NewtNews in Daily
News form and the weekly edition will remain a WWW version only. Thanks
for your support.

Dear Newton Developer
---------------------

** INTRODUCTION & INCENTIVE **

This area is dedicated to trying to solve NewtNews readers programming
needs, and in turn hopefully lead to the creation of a legitimate Newton
shareware solution for the developer solving the problem. If a developer
solves such a problem, NewtNews will give them a 50% price reduction for
any advertising service they order for that product in our Products and
Services area. If you have a utility you need written, please let
NewtNews know by sending an email to: newtnews@pobox.com.

** SYNC TO SIDEKICK 2.0 **

Dan Rosen <drosen@compusmart.ab.ca> writes:

You have a great publication, thanks. You had a link to REX
a while back. I just tried the Sidekick '98 from starfish and
it totally synchronizes to the Newton. Of course you have to
set the NCU settings to Sidekick 2.0.Thought you would like to
know (if you didn't already). Keep up the good work and good
  luck on your thesis.

** NEWTON PRINTING/SCANNING VIA IRDA TO NEW CANON PRINTER **

Jim Johnston <jjohnston@khsd.k12.ca.us> at Arvin High School has this
request:

I just saw the other day in Office Depot a Canon BJC-80 printer.
It has IrDA capabilities. I pointed my MP2K+ at it and it
responded gibberish. That means some enterprizing road warrior
could have a really portable printer if he/she would write a
  driver for it.

The BJC-80 has an optional scanner module that turns it into a
scanner. Wouldn't it be spiffy if someone could write an IRDA
connectible scanning program for the Newt also.

** SALARY-SNITCHING AT PIXAR **

The management of Pixar, the Steve Jobs-led computer graphics company
that created the movie "Toy Story," angered by a widely distributed
anonymous e-mail message that accurately revealed the salaries of its 400
employees, has filed suit in California seeking a restraining order
barring further publication of the information, as well as compensation
for damages suffered because the company could lose its edge in
"attracting and retaining the best qualified employees." An internal
investigation is proceeding to determine the identify of the
salary-snitch. (USA Today 16 Feb 98)

** COBOL VETERANS REENLISTING TO SOLVE YEAR 2000 PROBLEM **

Retired programmers in their 60s are rejoining the workforce to man the
front lines in battling the Year 2000 glitch. "To be called back to work
is rather flattering," says one. "We had thought of ourselves as
archaeological, as rather unique archaic beasts." Indeed, at least one
high-tech temp service staffs only seniors -- the Senior Staff 2000
located in San Jose, Calif., specializes in exclusively over-50 workers.
"Sixty-three percent are looking for something to do because they're
bored or because their spouse said 'get out of the house or else,'" says
Senior Staff's CEO, who adds that the biggest advantage to hiring older
workers is that they'll stick with the job till it's done, rather than
jumping ship for a better offer. "They don't need to beef up their
resumes. They don't even have resumes anymore." (TechWeb 16 Feb 98)

** CREATE THE HYPE, THEN THE PRODUCT **

High-tech venture capitalist Ann Winblad says the days of creating a
product, then getting funding to market it are over. "Now you must take
money quickly, or there will be many companies saying they do the same
thing. You need to take the money and declare victory immediately. Then
create a product." (Upside Mar 98)

** PRICE GAP BETWEEN DELL, OTHER PC MAKERS, NARROWS **

Dell Computer has built a huge business on its much-ballyhooed price
advantage -- a result of its direct sales strategy that enables it to
avoid costly inventory storage and management. Last year, prices on Dell
machines were running about 15% lower than comparable PCs from other
sellers, but that differential is quickly narrowing, as Compaq, IBM and
Hewlett-Packard adopt some of Dell's price-saving techniques. The result
is that Dell's advantage, percentage-wise, is now down into single
digits: "We have a significant and continued price advantage. But we
think there's a preoccupation with the price of the box," says a Dell
spokesman who notes that customization and direct contact with users are
also key to their success. (Investor's Business Daily 19 Feb 98)

** LAPTOPS REQUIRED OF INCOMING FRESHMEN **

Freshmen entering the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000
will be required to have laptop computers. Students can either bring
their own laptop (if it meets proper specifications) or buy the machines
themselves through Student Stores on campus. The university will offer
low-interest, four-year loans for students who wish to finance the
purchase, and will increase its financial aid budget to provide needy
students with additional grant assistance to help cover the cost of the
laptops. Some of the other institutions that require or will soon require
students to have laptop computers are Georgia Tech, Wake Forest,

** TRENDS: CO-OPETITION CAN SPELL SURVIVAL **

In these days of cutthroat competition, companies are finding
co-opetition can enable both them and their competitors to survive:
"Co-opetition is a methodology or a phenomenon where it makes good
business sense to cooperate with your competitor one day and compete with
your cooperator the next," says management consultant Sam Albert. "The
motivation for this is because no one company now can invest in some of
the things that have to get done. It's just too huge an investment. If
your competitor is the best person to align yourself with, then do it.
The fact is, co-opetition is an idea whose time has come. What's more,
it's here to stay. As fast as consumers are demanding more from their
computers, co-opetition is the only way that our industry can keep up.
With it, information technology competitors are expanding the industry
like never before." Albert says co-opetition is a good idea "when there
is a need to reduce research and development costs to improve margins;
when ther! e is a need to catch up in the market or define a new market,
but you don't have the resources to do it; and when there is a need to
establish standards that can benefit the entire industry." (Genevieve E.

** STRATEGIES: BLUR, AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT **

In their forthcoming book "Blur," consultants Stan Davis and Christopher
Meyer look at the convergence of three factors creating the new
"connected" economy and see, yes, blur: "blur, as in what a speedy world
looks like if you're the one standing still; blur, as in the increasingly
fuzzy distinctions between, say, 'product' and 'service,' as intangible
assets reinvent both; and blur, as in the erasure of boundaries that used
to cleanly separate firms, workers, and economies." How to cope with
blur? Using knowledge management focused on building a knowledge-based
business (and NOT focused primarily on internal knowledge transfer, like
so many knowledge management programs). To create a knowledge-based
business you have to give fresh thought to every aspect of the business
(strategy, products and services, relationships, organization, culture,
processes, infrastructure) and ask: what do you need to change to thrive
in a world of speed, intangibles, and connectivity? Should your! pro
ducts and services be altered so that they can do any or all of the
following: interact, customize, learn, upgrade, filter, anticipate? Ask
yourself the question: "What does my product want to know?" Coca-Cola's
answer to that kind of question resulted in the company equipping 800,000
