Subject: qg to html-ing pubs

1. Converting to RTF
MS-Word file, save as RTF (Rich Text Format).
PageMaker file, export as RTF.

2. Converting to HTML
Open RTF file in rtftohtml 2.7.5 (found in helpers folder -- is this
part of Netscape download or www utilities... can't remember.)

Result: rtftohtml 2.7.5 converts text and saves html version. It
strips out graphics and saves them as pict, leaving coded gif
placeholders.

Quite rtftohtml 2.7.5

3. Open html version of file in Word. The document will open as Text.

4. Make global changes

        FROM TO

        <p> ^p<p>

        <b> <STRONG>

        </b> </STRONG>

        <i> <EM>

        </i> </EM>

        <br> ^p<br>

        .gif .GIF

(I think that's all, or at least that's basically it.

5. Open Netscape and preview file (Open file ...)

6. Use Kevin's crib sheet to modify.

GRAPHICS:

7. Open GIFConverter 2.3.7 (available 0n free/shareware software
server).

8. Open pict file.

9. Save as ... GIF (select GIF fomat from pop-up menu.)

10. Preview in Netscape ... if page is already open, click on Reload
button. If page isn't already open it, use Open file command to open
it.

.............

When you like what you see and ar ready to publish, put your html file
and GIF graphics in one folder and name it.

Launch Fetch.

ftp to athena.dialup.mit.edu
enter your userid and password

*****DIRECTORY: /afs/athena/org/t/tps/www ********

When the www directory opens, scroll to the directory in which you to
install your new folder and double click to open it.

Under the Remote menu item, select Put folders and files.

In the dialog box that opens, scroll through the top window and find
the folder you want to FTP. Select it and click on ADD, then click
DONE.

A new box opens that lets you choose the format in which you want to
transmit files. Make sure you transmit BOTH Text and Graphics as RAW
DATA. File suffixes should be html for text and GIF for graphics.

When you are ready, click OK (or whatever it says to click).

Result: the folder and its contents transfer to the tps/www locker.

When it's done, close the connection.

Go to Netscape and open the URL

http://web.mit.edu//afs/athena/org/t/tps/www/

Scroll through and find your html document. Open by double-clicking.

Hooray. You've done it, I hope.

Susan
