Turning on andrew messages CAVEATS: Follow these instructions if you REALLY want to use messages INSTEAD of regular Athena mail reading programs (such as mh, xmh, and rmail) to read your Athena mail. Only advanced users of mail should get involved in this aspect of the Andrew experiment at the present. If all you know about reading mail is that you type 'inc' followed by 'show next' to view mail, do NOT proceed any further. The archive format of Andrew messages is not compatible with either mh or rmail (although conversion is not too difficult). If you have lots of saved mail folders, consider experimenting with messages, put put off converting your folders until such a time as you REALLY WANT to keep using messages for all your mail manipulation. The messages program is extremely featureful, and not well integrated into the Athena environment. Anyone using messages should send mail to wdc@athena.mit.edu because he will want to give you extra help, and he will want to know how messasges should change. DOING IT: After you have at least once performed source /mit/andrew/.attachrc as the instructions for using Andrew say, you will have been notified of the creation of a file called 'preferences'. You are going to edit this file. Look for a line in your preferences file that looks like: # PersonalMailCollectionCommand: getmail po:${USER} ${HOME}/Mailbox/pokludgeXXXXXX Remove the '#' from the begining of the line. Thereafter, when you run the program 'messages' it will contact the Athena post office just as your old mail reading program did.
