Finishing Up and Starting Gnome To start Gnome, you must edit the X startup files. Use the /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients file to provide system-wide startup of X and Gnome for all users. Copy the current Xclients file to a backup and use one of the samples below for the new Xclients. Use or create the home directory .Xclients file if you want individual user startup preference for X and Gnome. The individual user .Xclients file overrides the system Xclients file. If desired, create the user .Xclients file using one of the samples below. Run startx from the command prompt after editing the Xclients/.Xclients file(s). In the startup file use either the gnome-session command (which starts enlightenment) or the panel command/enlightenment command. Gnome-session is recommended because it has configurable startup options. Gnome-session is also more memory intensive. The configuration tool is in the control-center. The default session file is /usr/share/default.session. The user session file is /.gnome/session. A sample startup Xclients or .Xclients file using gnome-session follows: #!/bin/bash gnome-session ## A sample startup Xclients or .Xclients file using the panel command follows: #!/bin/bash background-properties-capplet --init-session-settings & screensaver-properties-capplet --init-session-settings & panel & /usr/bin/enlightenment ## Start X and run the Gnome menu editor (Settings:Menu Editor) to fill out Icons, add programs, and check sort order. Go to Settings:Desktop:Window Manger and configure enlightenment Focus & Display, Special FX, Behavior, Desktops, Audio, Background, Themes, etc.. Use the Enlightenment Help Button at the bottom of the screen (visible with the ShinyMetal theme) for information about themes and toggling desktop features Edit /usr/local/enlightenment/themes/DEFAULT/actionclasses.cfg to setup up desktop buttons for themes like ShinyMetal. (starts about line 365). The default Clean theme does not have desktop buttons. Add applets as necessary to the Gnome panel Try downloading a few recently updated themes from http://e.themes.org. Experiment and choose your preference. Create a directory for each theme under /usr/share/enlightenment/themes (unless the tar file creates it's own directory), and untar the theme archive in it's directory. The theme name is the directory name for enlightenment startup purposes.
