StarOffice[tm] 7 Office Suite - A Sun[tm] ONE Software Offering

Dear User

This file contains important information about this program. Please read this information very carefully before starting work.

You can find the latest information on the web at www.sun.com/staroffice

Migrating From StarOffice 5.2 or Updating From StarOffice 6.0 to StarOffice 7

You can update an existing StarOffice 6.0 installation using the StarOffice 7 Setup.

If StarOffice 5.2 is already installed on your system, the setup application of StarOffice 7 lets you migrate your data from the old to the new version. Furthermore, after you install StarOffice 7, you will find that a new AutoPilot for converting your e-mails has been added to StarOffice 5.2.

To start this AutoPilot, choose in StarOffice 5.2 "File – AutoPilot - E-Mail Converter".

Notes on Installation

System Requirements:

Note: The UNIX versions of StarOffice cannot be installed on a (V)FAT partition, since FAT file systems do not support the creation of symbolic links.

Difficulties starting StarOffice (e.g. applications hang) as well as problems with the screen display are often caused by the graphics card driver. If these problems occur, please update your graphics card driver or try using the graphics driver delivered with your operating system. Difficulties displaying 3D objects can often be solved by deactivating the option "Use OpenGL" under 'Tools - Options - StarOffice - View - 3D view'.

Before installing StarOffice, one or more operating system patches from Sun Microsystems must be installed. You can find them on the program CD in the following directories or download them at http://sunsolve.sun.com

Operating system patches required:

The versions mentioned above are the minimum requirements, newer (higher) version numbers are also allowed.

You can install StarOffice 7 along side of an older version of StarOffice. If you later choose to deinstall the older version of StarOffice, you must call the installation program of the newer version and choose 'Repair'. This ensures that the new version is correctly registered in your system.
Please note that copy and paste via clipboard between StarOffice 6.0 and StarOffice 7 might not work in StarOffice format. If that happens, choose 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose a format other than StarOffice, or open the document in StarOffice 7 directly.

Please make sure you have enough free memory in the temporary directory on your system and that read, write and run access rights have been granted. Close all other programs before starting the installation.

Server-Based Configuration and Limited Java Functionality

When the StarOffice configuration is stored on an LDAP server and managed remotely via the StarOffice Configuration Manager, the Java Environment is not correctly initialized on program startup, and some Java related features of StarOffice do not work:

Deinstalling a Network Installation Under Common Desktop Environment (CDE)

The shortcuts set in the CDE in a network installation are not automatically removed during deinstallation. Before deinstallation, enter as Administrator (root) the following command line to remove the shortcuts from the CDE: /usr/dt/bin/dtappintegrate -u -s [path to StarOffice].

Example: /usr/dt/bin/dtappintegrate -u -s /usr/local/StarOffice7

Problems During Program Startup on Gnome

If you experience StarOffice startup problems (most notably while using Gnome) please 'unset' the SESSION_MANAGER environment variable inside the shell you use to start StarOffice. This can be done by adding the line "unset SESSION_MANAGER" to the beginning of the soffice shell script found in the "[office folder]/program" directory.

Important Information for Arabic and Hebrew Versions

If the user interface of the Arabic or Hebrew versions shows blanks or squares instead of text, please install the most recent Java Runtime Environment (JRE 1.4.1) before running the StarOffice Installation Program. The JRE will install the fonts required for Arabic and Hebrew versions.

Important Accessibility Notes

Due to a problem within the Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE), you have to set the operating system locale (language) to "English (United States)" or "(EN-us)". Only this setting enables you to work with programs like ZoomText. However, this problem no longer exists in Java versions 1.4.0_02 or 1.4.1_01. (Note: The program WindowEyes does not work with StarOffice, because it does not support the Java Accessibility API.)

Java(TM) Access Bridge

You have to install the Java Access Bridge version 1.0.3 (1.0.4 or higher recommended). Only this version will enable StarOffice to work with assistive technology tools. For more information on accessibility and where to get the Java Access Bridge, visit www.sun.com/staroffice/accessibility.

Mozilla Address Book Driver

The Mozilla address book driver requires the SUNWzlib package. This package is not part of the minimum Solaris operating system installation. If you require access to the Mozilla address book, then add this package to your Solaris operating system using the command "pkgadd" from the installation CD.

Additional Language Modules (Dictionaries, Hyphenation, Thesauri)

In addition to the dictionaries in every installation set, other language modules can be installed which consist of dictionaries, hyphenation functions and, for some languages, also thesauri.

The following additional language modules are presently available:

Afrikaans, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (UK), English (US), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

A Readme file with information about the installation can be found in the ADDON directory on the StarOffice Installation CD or, if you downloaded the Add-on from the Internet, in your download directory.

Shortcut Keys

Only shortcut keys (key combinations) not used by the operating system can be used in StarOffice. If a key combination in StarOffice does not work as described in the StarOffice Help, check if that shortcut is already used by the operating system. To rectify such conflicts, you can change the keys assigned by your operating system. Alternatively, you can change almost any key assignment in StarOffice. For more information on this topic, refer to the StarOffice Help or the Help documention of your operating system.

File System ReiserFS: StarOffice Will Not Start for User IDs Larger Than 65535

In versions lower than 3.6, the file system ReiserFS causes a problem as soon as the user ID is larger than 65535. The problem is that files temporarily saved by StarOffice can no longer be removed by the program itself, but rather only by the system administrator (e.g. /tmp/OSL_PIPE_xxx ). The result is that StarOffice cannot be started. The problem is in the ReiserFS file system and has been fixed in version 3.6 and higher.

File Locking

In the default setting, file locking is turned off in StarOffice. To activate it, you have to set the appropriate environment variables SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=1 and export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING. These entries are already in disabled form in the soffice script file.

Warning: The activated file locking feature can cause problems with Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.7 used in conjunction with Linux NFS 2.0. If your system environment has these parameters, we strongly recommend that you avoid using the file locking feature. Otherwise, StarOffice will hang when you try to open a file from a NFS mounted directory from a Linux computer.

Using Info-ZIP

StarOffice uses Info-ZIP to create and unpack the StarOffice installation, as well as for packing and unpacking the StarOffice XML file format. Info-ZIP programs (ZIP, UnZip and other utilities) are available free of charge and can be used in the source code and as an executable program. They can be attained by visiting Anonymous FTP sites such as ftp.uu.net:/pub/archiving/zip/*.
