Brain Waves Critique George Madrid 21 November 1995 Brain Waves was a fun read. I enjoyed it. I was expecting a twist at the end, but have to admit that it wasn't the twist that I expected. At times, the prose seemed a little forced or awkward. Things like having fists "hurled" into the torso (10.2) struck me odd. The dialogue seemed awkward at times. Also, the tone of the prose changes flavor sometimes. Things like "The finishing touches were to be made tonight." (2.2) don't quite mesh for me with a narrator who also says "hit the gas." I guess I was trying to figure out whether the style was supposed to be prosy or hard-boiled. I didn't like the computer interface. It seemed repetitious and annoying to me. Quite frankly, my eye skipped right over it. It seems to be a plot piece because the characterization is sparse. For this reason, I would have liked to have known more about the drug stuff. I know it's not the focus of the story, but it would have been nice and perhaps been a small pinkish herring. I know that this is hard, since (I presume) that the author has never been involved in large drug deals. How do lights fumble? (3.1)
