The pendulum used for these experiments was a piece of PVC pipe roughly 12'' long and 1'' in diameter, hinged at the top so that it can swing freely around one axis and with an exposed bolt head on its end facing in the direction of swing.  The pendulum was used in a previous lab for popping balloons.
