Tim Berners-Lee
Tim Berners-Lee. I had heard of him since I first started looking at
the web. He was the creator, the founder, the all-father of the web.
When I first set up the SIPB web server, I sent him mail, letting him
know there was another web server in the world (there were roughly 100
total at that time). He replied: "Great stuff! Any reason why you
aren't running on port 80? Tim". It was great. Tim, the one and only
web diety had declared something we had done "great stuff". I don't
think I ever really got back to him about why we ran on port 8001.
