May, 1993

So, in May of 1993, I decided to set up a web server. Chad had recently installed the beta version of Mosaic, the new web browser from NCSA. Mosaic was incredible compared to the first time I had seen the web. So, bert, Chad and I went about setting up a web server.

We decided to use a server called Plexus because it was one of few web servers available and it was in perl. I like perl. So, we installed plexus and tested it.

We didn't get much traffic the first few days except for some guy from France. Eventually, we announced it in all of the places that there are to announce things on the web. Back then, this was a total of 3 places: The NCSA What's New List, The www-announce mailing list, and telling Tim Berners-Lee himself. So, we sent three mail messages and were happy.
